JONES STIFFS, SO MERKERSON STEPS UP TO THE MIKE

Roy Jones was, as usual, a no-show on Wednesday’s conference call to promote the October 1 fight with Antonio Tarver, but his trainer, Alton Merkerson, was there to answer questions from reporters. Merkerson talked about the re-insertion of Roy’s father into the camp, as well as the alleged hand “injury” that had the St. Pete Times reporting Jones was pulling out. And of course, no gathering with the boxing press would be complete without someone asking an inane question about Roy Jones’ “legacy.” Here are some excerpts from that conference call.

  2. CARLOS ARTIS Says:

ROY JONES JR. WILL KNOCK OUT TARVER OCTOBER 1ST

  3. bill major Says:

best thing that ever happened to roy jones was to get ko’d ! humility is a good thing and i think roy forgot that, cuz with it comes focus and hard work. he had neither after years of success . i think he thought he was invincible, but it proved his undoing. now i think that since that last ko from johnson he has had a year to reassess himself and decided that
he can’t go out like that so we are going to see a refocused and rededicated roy jones destroy tarver, who thinks more of himself than i think the press does. jones has not lost it in one night as some media know it alls are saying. it dosent happen like that guys, it’s a slow progression and prior to his losses he was coming off of winning the heavyweight championship. he was tired and too overconfident as i see it.
    thank you- bill major

  4. Angel Says:

Roy Jones is at the most crucial point of his career, he is not fighting for that first knockout - he’s fighting for his legacy and self respect, and that make him too dangerous for Tarver. Go Roy you still the Champ in our Heart.

  5. Carlos Z Says:

I will predict that the fight will end in the 6th, Knockout Jones.

  6. richard brinkley Says:

I know my boy Roy Jones will win October 1,2005. Because i know what he can do if he stops bull sh***ing. HE’S THE BEST EVER TO TOUCH A PAIR OF BOXING GLOVES!!!

  7. Jeremy Mayfield Says:

Roy Jones Jr. is still the best pound for pound fighter in the entire history of boxing and come October 1st, he will knock out Antonio Tarver.(Ya’ll musta forgot)!!!

  8. brian davis Says:

I pray Roy knocks this big mouthed, over rated b**ch out!

  9. EDDIE KANE JR Says:

IF ROY PULLS BACK AGAIN HE’LL GET KNOCKED OUT AGAIN. GET AWAY FROM THE ROPES, STAY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RING AND BOX….AND STOP KISSING ROY’S *** AND TELL ROY 2 BOX…. AND TELL ROY STYLES MAKE FIGHTERS…THIS EDDIE KANE JR FROM DETROIT, MICH

  10. Eduard Labadia Says:

A focused and well-conditioned Roy this time could rewrite and rejuvenate his badly depleted superstar status he’s basked on for years and prior to descending from his historic heavyweight crown and masterful conquest of Ruiz, a feat only an elite fighter from a lighter weight, like himself, could have accomplished. Humbled twice in a row by Tarver and Johnson’s two successive humiliating knockout victories over this sure Hall-of-Famer, I expect Roy to have learned the price of humility he was never known to display during those winningest times. You deserve this, Roy, so better be good about it- shut that loud mouth off from this cantankerous pretender.

  11. Louis Says:

C’mon people, Roy’s finished … nothing lasts forever, sure i’d love him to win but look at his last 3 fights. In his prime he would’ve beaten both these guys and sure a poor jones did get a dubious decision over Tarver, but the fact remains the same, he ain’t what he was. He should of quit after Ruiz, what was left to prove/achieve? And as for Merkerson’s comments, sounds like he’s making excuses! He wasn’t motivated to drop in weight and become undisputed champ again? He wasn’t motivated to beat Tarver after Tarver’s comments? Or motivated to beat Johnson, a guy who beat Tarver, who was the guy who beat Jones? What more does he need? As for his dad’s back in camp, big deal, there’s only Roy in the ring fightnight! As i say, i’d love roy to win and he’s been a favorite of mine and i think the best boxer in my lifetime (i’m 36), but just can’t see it. As for all you pro-jones people, you seem as desperate as Merkerson for jones to win, this is about money and nothing else. Pray i’m wrong, though.

  12. bev list Says:

roy is gonna tap that *** like RJ would

  13. MIKE Says:

Tarver is a big mouthed p**k and I cant wait to see Jones kick the P*** out of him. Don’t get me wrong, Tarver is good but Jones has to much to lose. Jones is going to Tarver to school!!!!!!!!!!

  14. James Says:

Well, well well once again we have the makings for a VERY good fight. No matter what has been said or what you think the odds are, that Mr. Jones will not only win the fight in true warrior fashion he will once and for all prove that he belongs with the elite fighters. Taver is looking for $. Jones will easily win the fight if he has trained properly.

  15. ann Says:

Just want to say, I love boxing Love Roy … Love Dalahola….I know if Roy is ready this fight is a no contest….I just hope our man has his heart and head into this fight…..Hey, by the way what about our fight last night…

  16. Reggie Powell Says:

I have read all of these comments left by you so called boxing experts. Roy Jones has proven himself to be the greatest pound for pound fighter to ever grace the squared circle. Roy only has to prove one thing, and that one thing only he knows. Roy is not fighting for respect and props from you fans. Roy is fighting for Roy, and I know as an athlete myself that when it’s time, it’s time. So watch Roy Jones work out with Tarver on October 1st and not to prove anything to any of us.

  17. R DILLON Says:

RJ is back not ROY JONES I said RJ … that means A Tarver is in trouble … it will be a knock out for sure because not only did Tarver become the first person to knock Roy out but he also put a blemish on his rematch record. I hope Antonio’s life insurance is paid up.

  18. bruce Says:

tarver don’t want it roy is gonna knock his over rated *ss out (y’all must a forgot) the best pound for pound fighter in the world

  19. Keyah Says:

I think that it’s great for boxing to see Roy get KO’d his last 2 fights. It’s a true test for Roy now, because he hasn’t had a real challenge in a very long time. The challenge meaning himself. Roy is fighting this fight to prove to himself and to himself only that he is still the best pound for pound fighter in this era of boxing. I know for a fact that Roy is extremely hungry and has trained rigorously, because I have had the privilege of observing his training. I’ll just say this in closing, Tarver is going to have his hands full on Saturday night, and why do you think that Big Roy is back? I’ll tell you why - it’s because he knows what it takes to push little Roy’s buttons. Much respect to Alton for training Roy these last 12 years, but a parent knows what it takes to get their child motivated.

  20. Charlie Singleton Says:

Roy Jones, Jr. is the people’s Champ! Roy will knock out Tarver with a vicious body shot in the 6th round and you heard it from me first. I believe Roy has regained his confidence and if he fight his fight, Tarver will be in trouble early, then Roy will mug him!!

  21. CHARLES Says:

I am sick and tired of all you so-called boxing fans who think you know ROY JONES JR. HE IS A TRUE GENTLEMAN, I remember when jones knocked out some of the great fighters back in the day. THE only thing that’s going to happen in this fight is plain and simple. ROY will knock tarver in to next week and show the world he’s still king of the ring. keep in mind they say he’s never fought anybody good, well i don’t know of any boxer who’s gotten to the top by fighting nobodys. SO my point short and sweet - if he did not learn anything from tarver’s last fight you don’t know roy like i know roy. IT will be the best you have ever seen from roy jones jr. SO stop all the flapping of the lips before you catch cramps come oct 1st there will be a new champ - a new light heavy weight champion of the world and still pound for pound the best mofo around ROY JONES JR!!!!!!!!!!! IF WE CAN’T GET ALONG LETS GET IT ON!!!!!!!

  22. antwan mathis Says:

In regards two the legacy of roy jones jr. … In my opinion jones jr. is one of boxing’s greatest boxers and is well deserving of his hard earned place in history amongst the greatest. roy jones was not physically or mentally ready in the last three fights - he had to drop 25lbs to fight light heavy wieght and thats a tole on anybody. roy would have beaten either fighter had he been healthy. oct.1 will prove my theory as roy jones out classes tarver and makes him look bad … just watch and see. roy jones has regained his passion on the basis of pride and respect - every man has something he will fight for.

  23. justin v Says:

I think Roy was the best in his prime and even today he just needs to get focused, work hard and stay out of that mess with the bodyheadbangers till he is finished boxing . Roy is the man always … he will show the people october 1st.

  24. SDG Says:

I can’t wait for Tarver to be flat on his back thanks to a perfect Roy Jones left hook. Hopefully RJJ shows up for this fight just like he did in the Montell Griffin rematch and destroys “pink lips” Tarver.

    GO ROY!

  25. Steve Coxwell Says:

Roy, let’s shut them all up…please! Yeah, maybe since the Heavyweight championship you let your guard down - a lot of the comments are right- this ones about you Roy, your legacy………you can make it happen. Why? The Gulf Coast………..all of us……….will be there with you…….and so will Dad……make’s a difference!! Believe in yourself Roy- we do!! I’d be at the fight but pay per view will have to be my ticket……..now would I pay hard earned dollars for pay for view if Roy awasn’t going to kick punk Tarver’s *ss?? No I wouldn’t………..see you in Pensacola Roy when you bring the titles back!! Stevo

  26. BIG DADDY Says:

I know roy can do it … I have faith and trust in that guy… he’s the man.

  27. SANDRA Says:

ROY STILL REMAINS MY BOY AND WILL SEND A MESSAGE TO THE WORLD WHO MUSTA FORGOT.

  28. steve Says:

Roy’s been quiet lately………..and that’s NEW! ’cause when a man who brags more than Muhammad Ali starts standing up press conferences, re-hires his Dad as trainer, and refuses to say anything to anyone about the fight (Which’ll be here in less than 3 days), then you just know there’s a lot going on in that head. Now I’m not claiming to be a mind-reader, but as a man who was born a bragger (I’m probably the worst winner on earth!), and who’s been silenced in his own right, i think i know what Roy’s been thinking.

    Redemption
    Revenge
    Pain.

And for real, if Tarver doesn’t start working the bag as much as he has been the Mic for the last couple of weeks, he won’t see round 2 (Remember Griffin?).

And if Roy’s thinking is anything like mine, he’ll bang this kid up before sending him home empty-handed.

My predictions: Roy Jones Jr KO 5

  29. Keith Gerald Says:

Roy Jones is, and will remain the best pound for pound fighter ever. After the first of October 2005 you better recognize. You so-called critics create disasters for the greatest athletes that have made their mark in sports. After October first 2005, you should give the credit because it will be due.

  30. keith Says:

i think roy is one of the best fighters today - we will see what happens

  31. coop. bigwilliestyle Says:

ROY THIS IS YOUR BOY FROM THE HOMEFRONT … SHOW THIS PUNK THE SAME MOVE YOU LEARNED FROM ONE OF YOUR GAMECOCKS … THAT WILL DO IT … BELIEVE ME I KNOW CHICKEN … I AM KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN 9th AND BAYOU. YEAH BUDDY!

  32. Micheal Says:

I can’t believe that tarver actually believes he can beat a primed and ready RJ. If he does I will give him his props and stop watching boxing.

  33. BIG JAY from B-MORE Says:

With everything on the line, a fighter like Roy would not take this fight unless he knew he was gonna serve Taver an *SS WHIPPIN KO. IN THE 3RD.

  34. j will Says:

Ali had frazier, Leonard had hearns, and now Jones has his Tarver. Dealing with adversity is what makes great fighters. This is Jones’s chance to deal with the only adversity of his career. What will happen? Only Roy can answer that. But, the great ones, don’t go away that easy.

  35. smitty Says:

Mayweather-Gatti was the biggest pay per view mismatch in boxing history, until now. Roy will again leave his mark. Tarver is a money hungry b****, and RJ will expose and impose on Oct. 1.

  36. big bob Says:

well to all you boxing fans … i am one myself … not only a fan but i was a pro fighter myself and one finally wakes up and sees when a man has another man’s number … like tarver, he’s got roy’s number … it’s like a black sheep kinda thing in all the years of boxing there was always one guy you had trouble with and for roy its tarver … hoping he wins to save face … but don’t really think he’s got it anymore for the sport … it’s more about the last dollars than anything else … cause there’s really nothing left to prove … is there? … wish you luck roy…your friend … to quick to … sweet

  37. ROB Says:

ALL YOU WHO POSTED FOR THE RUNNING SCARED JONES CAN NOW ADMIT TARVER KICKED HIS BUTT. RETIRE JONES NO MORE BORING FIGHTS
