Abramson: JONES DID NOTHING
By Boxing Channel Radio October 2nd, 2005

Mitch Abramson, a feature writer for The Sweet Science, wonders why the match was even made. According to the former CJ Award winner, Roy Jones Jr. did nothing in the way of a sincere attempt to win Saturday’s light heavyweight fight against Antonio Tarver, and felt he came into the fight with nothing to give. Charles Jay of Boxing Channel Radio solicited Abramson’s thoughts in the wake of Tarver’s unanimous decision victory.

Yeah Roy should be ashamed of how he lead his fans on… He’s turned out to be just a big talker. I hope he finally quits for good. The sad part about this was Roy could have knocked Tarver out. Tarver was tired and he showed his age in there. All Roy had to do was let his hands go all night long…He had enough energy to dance and showboat, but he forgot about throwing punches. If roy would have thrown 30 punches a round with bad intentions, he would have knocked Tarver out.

It’s easy for people to judge Roy because they don’t know what it’s like to be in the ring. Roy will go down in the history of boxing as one of the greatest. He has nothing to be ashamed about. So all you couch boxers stop judging and exercise….

How soon they forget. Does anyone remember Roy jones dropping 40lbs. and beating Antonio Tarver in their first fight? How about when he pulverized James Toney much in the same fashion he was beaten by Tarver? Or maybe you’ll recall him besting Bernard Hopkins WITH ONE FRIGGIN HAND!!! How about him destroying Eric Harding? You know, the guy who knocked Tarver into oblivion? I read an article on this site that said Roy wasn’t one of the greatest of all time at 175. That may or may not be true, but the same guy said that Tarver and/or Johnson (the same guy who was easily dispatched by Hopkins, another Jones victim) would have beaten Jones in his prime. Here’s the truth: ROY JONES, JR IS THE GREATEST MIDDLE/SUPERMIDDLEIGHT THAT EVER PUT ON THE GLOVES. THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A COMBINATION OF SPEED, POWER, AND DEFENSE LIKE HIM IN THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF BOXING. SO WHAT IF HE HAS NO CHIN, IN HIS PRIME, YOU COULDN’T HIT HIM!!!! It’s a shame he went into that last fight trying NOT to get knocked out instead of trying to WIN!!! It’s also a shame you so-called experts don’t remember him for what he was.
