Zach Levin: WINKY’S ON A DIFFERENT PLANE
By TSS Predictions December 8th, 2005Sam Soliman is as unorthodox as they come. He’s in great condition, physically strong, and willing to cross the line. But none of this matters because Winky Wright is on a different plane. Soliman might agitate him for a few rounds but, ultimately, he’ll have no answer for that metronome jab, steely high guard, and inexorable forward march. Remember that scene in Star Wars when Han Solo and Chewbacca are trapped in the trash compactor? That’s what it’s like fighting Winky. Except Soliman won’t be stuck in a popcorn movie with a well-timed escape. Wright by unanimous decision.

It means nothing that Winky is on a different level. Any fan will tell you that. Winky has already stated that he needs the big fights and this isn’t one of them. If he takes this lightly he’d better watch out. Many a great fighter has looked average when undermotivated. Very dangerous if he doen’t get his mind on it.

Well, I’d say Winky’s got a pretty good track record. 15 years as a pro, 52 fights, and one could argue he won 51 of them. I don’t have him losing a fight in over 10 years–never saw him against Vasquez in ‘94. That’s why he’s on a different level and that’s why it doesn’t mean nothing. Winky’s not going to sleep on anybody with huge paydays looming just beyond this fight, but not if he loses.
