In Boxing News: the Phillipines Backs Pacquiao, HBO the Promoter & More
By Boxing News January 20th, 2006In Boxing News: All the Phillipines Backs Manny Pacquiao
Tons of Manny Pacquiao and Erik Morales news in the boxing press today. The Arizona Republic highlights - which for me - is one of the really unique angles of this fight: it would seem an entire naton is holding its breath for Pacquiao: The Philippines has a national treasure, but forget about Imelda Marcos’ shoes. Manny Pacquiao is the crown jewel. The Pacific nation’s extraordinary love affair with a 130-pound fighter goes beyond anything ever witnessed by his trainer, Freddie Roach, or even Bob Arum, who was on the front lines of hero worship during his days as Muhammad Ali’s promoter. Of course, Erik Morales deserves equal billing in all of this. Tim Smith of the New York Daily News provides some background as to why Erik Morales is no longer being trained by his father.
The bottom line is that it is because of fighters like Morales and Pacquiao that I watch the sport. They are small men, but they are both small men with b**** like church bells. While we read daily about other fighters fighting over 60-40 splits instead of fighting in the ring, Pacquiao and Morales embody what the sport should be about. Tomorrow can’t come quick enough.
The Tampa Tribune has an interesting series on the role of the promoter in boxing and, specifically, whether HBO should really be considered a promoter. It’s well worth the read. The Tribune also takes a look at Winky Wright’s foray into the promotional game. Says Winky, boxing needs a new generation of promoters who are looking out for the fighters, not people out there just trying to make a buck. We’re in it to make money, but we want to make sure fighters are taken care of. The Grand Rapids Press, meanwhile, looks at would-be promoter Floyd Mayweather: while Floyd Mayweather ultimately hopes to establish a boxing promotional company to cut out the middleman and deal directly with HBO himself, he is getting an interim lesson from the sport’s two most prominent promoters, Bob Arum and Don King, in how to mitigate a pay-per-view event of dubious quality.

Wow! Of the 12 boxing “experts” you interviewed, only one (or two) predicted a Manny Pacquiao win. That’s only goes to show how “good” these so-called experts are.

panis kayo morales!

Let me paraphrase what you have said in the second paragraph that caught my attention and made me laugh. This is what you said:
“They are small men, but they are both small men with b**** like church bells”.
If other male readers could not get what you have intended to say, then I can safely say they have no b**** like church bells.
Thanks for your column.

Now the dilemna is finished on the boxing between Manny and Erik … Foreign press predicted Erik will win a unanimous decision again, 12 against 1. The reverse happened when it turns today. Manny is an icon in the the Philippines and no one predicted he would lose in his country. Because they know Manny from the bottom - how he grew. Not unlike the westerners looking only at one thing … we know Erik is a tough counter fighter but he didn’t sustain the hungry attack of the pacman.
Furthermore, Here is the 1st predictions on the pacquiao-barrera upcoming fight: “ONCE AGAIN PACQUIAO WILL PUT BARRERA ON THE CANVAS”.
Thanks for the comments.

I was completely wrong with my prediction of a points win for Morales.
I figured Morales would be too cool, calm under pressure from a two-bit banger unable to alter his strategy from the first fight.
Wrong again. It was a good fight, glad to see it, happy the underdog (in my eyes anyway) won.
Not too happy with the Pine Rivers Memorial Bowls club choosing to broadcast the cricket on the big screen, meaning all the fight fans in the sports bar had to watch the fight on small telelvisions without sound.

i will only comment that even if all filipinos want manny to win, not all predicted that he will win….some thought that manny is one of the one-hit-wonders of our country… im so glad that he proved those people wrong

“Filipino boxing fans are rabid to the point of lunacy; they now impatiently wait for their beloved Pacquiao to avenge his defeat. It’s not to be however. Morales is a more technically sound fighter who knows how to beat Pacquiao. And he will. Morales by unanimous decision.
by Scott Mallon”
To Mr. Scott Mallon- Your El terrible’ is impossible’ to win. Morales, a more technically sound fighter, huh! where is he? Your predictions, I think you need a bigger crystal ball so next time you will know who wins.
To our beloved “PACMAN” Manny Pacquiao. We salute you, you did a good and “El terrible’ fight”. Please don’t forget to thank the Lord for all your blessings. Mabuhay Ka! Thank God I’m a NoyPI!!!
January 23rd, 2006 at 3:26 am
Manny, you did it. Please retire now as I don’t enjoy seeing people hurt. You can now use your fame to unite your countrymen. That’s enough.

PACMAN should give Barrera a rematch and for sure, Barrera will fall again. That will make Manny as one of the world’s greatest fighters ever- in the company of Muhammad Ali, Roberto Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard, Julio Cesar Chavez

January 24th, 2006 at 12:31 pm
The reason why we Filipino believe 100% that Pacquiao will win is because we’ve seen all his prior fights outside USA. These are all tough and gruelling fights from hard punching Koreans, Thailanders, Japanese and Australians all won by Pacquiao. Just as Mexicans trust Morales’ skill, we trust Pacquiao’s power punch and unrelenting body attack. We have seen his prowess before, and now non-Pacquiao fans are believers. Never again underestimate a boxer just because he is not an American-known fighter.
January 24th, 2006 at 12:41 pm
OOOpppsss! I forgot hard punching Indonesians also are also victims of Pacquiao pugilistic power and skills. Keep it up kababayan at kalahi. Mabuhay bayang magiliw.

January 26th, 2006 at 2:35 am
Its my first time to watch a boxing….and it was Manny Pacquiao’s game against Erik “El Terrible”Morrales. Its a 100% that everyone really believe that Manny has potencials to win his game.I was very nervous upon watching his game….it feels like I was hurt to when Morrales punches him. After all Manny gives his very best to proved his “malakas” than Morrales. Its a very great expercience that I saw a really good fight between our country and Mexico.Manny should be known a “Hero” on our country, not just a hero but a “Model” to all Filipinos.Pacquiao realy did great and a big accomplishment for him that he is able to unite all the Filipinos, and top of it are the leaders of our country…..Pacquiao deserves all what Filipinos could give..
