In Boxing News: Searching For Manny Pacquiao, Ouma, Gatti & More
By Uncategorized January 26th, 2006In Boxing News: Searching For Manny Pacquiao
Trainer Freddie Roach said Manny Pacquiao’s victory over Erik Morales was the best win of his life. To beat Morales like that, nobody expected that. Manny does the work and he listens to me. I only have to guide him through and when the bell rings he’s the one who fights, said Roach. And close to 4,000 policemen will be deployed to secure Pacquiao when he arrives in the Phlippines to a hero’s welcome on Friday, said Metro Manila’s police chief. They certainly take their boxing and their Pacman seriously in the Philippines. No kidding, Dong Secuya writes that Yahoo! today reported “Manny Pacquiao”cracked the top 5 sports searches in the Yahoo! search engine. That is a lot of searches.
Many boxers have suffered childhoods filled with hardship. But Kassim Ouma, who fights tomorrow at Desert Diamond Casino, didn’t even have a childhood. Born in the East African nation of Uganda, Ouma was captured by a guerrilla group at age 7 and forced to serve in its army. The Ouma bout will be televised on ESPN2 Friday Night Fights.
Arturo Gatti also returns this weekend against Thomas Damgaard. Promoters say that more than 10,000 seats have been sold at the 12,000 seat Boardwalk Hall. Trainer Buddy McGirt believs Gatti still has something left in the tank and Gatti agrees: I’m really healthy for all the fights I’ve been through, and I’m glad Buddy stopped that fight (vs. Mayweather). I’m glad to be back in the ring. That’s what I live for and that’s what makes me who I am … I’ll know when it’s time (to retire). It’s not time now.
The comeback of El Paso lightweight Juan Lazcano continues Feb. 24, against former title challenger Ben Tackie at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Lazcano will headline a Telefutura card the night before Mosley-Vargas.
Oliver McCall has been jailed for 30 days because of a brawl with police in Nashville last week. He pleaded guilty after being charged with assaulting police officers, making threats, resisting and evading arrest and criminal trespass. He had a glass pipe and cocaine in his possession when he was arrested, and was restrained by several officers only after a Taser stun-gun was twice used. After his arrest McCall told reporters that he had been battling a crack cocaine addiction for 20 years.

How popular Manny is? Here in Phils. cockfighting is legal. The day before the fight of Pacquiao-Morales, The cockpit manager announced that they will put a big TV screen at the arena. Knowing that no afficionados will go so its a come on strategy. During the fight of Manny Paquiao, The cockfighting was stopped. all are watching Manny’s fight. and the cheering was louder than any cockfighting. Yes, its true, everytime Manny fights… the time stops here in the Phils.

after the beating of Morales and other so-called popular Mexican fighters, I believe these people are thinkng over & over again who will be there next best bet to fight the waiting & bored Manny Pacquiao.I don’t think the mexicans have the balls to put whoever is left of there stable. Mabuhay si Pac Man!

“Experts” (or shall we say those who were caught with their pants down?) are one in saying that Erik Morales had gone through too many fights (above 50) and the punches that he absorbed finally caught up with him after the fifth round of Morales-Pacquiao II. I can see the same pattern of thought and arguments if and when Barrera finally gets the courage to face the Pacman again and gets beaten up - considering that Barrera fought more pro fights than Morales.
Come on guys… Let us give credit to where it is due. Let’s call a spade a spade — Pacman did his homework and beat the best at their best. If Morales got tired, it was due to Pacman’s relentless and double-fisted attack. Methinks Manny Pacquiao is now No. 1 P4P! God Bless.

Manny is a boxer with a heart, humble and low profile, with a true dedication and love for his country, he acknowledge the LORD GOD in every interviews which i believe is the first and foremost. I strongly believe that if manny will not change..always believe in GOD…manny will be a great man that will be remembered in history by filipinos. Mabuhay ka manny at patuloy kang pagpalain ng PANGINOON.

It was the first time in my life that I’ve seen a man who would unite us Filipino’s for about an hour…not in politics but a brutal sport named boxing. Manny Pacquiao did it all; he stopped the crimes, stopped everybody from working and everyone of us seem like were “real” brothers.
The only bad thing that happened to me during Manny’s fight is I had to jog a distance of 2 km just to buy our merienda during the commercial break and back in time for the next round. The reason : even tricycle drivers in our village ceased working just to watch how Manny clobbered Erik.

Manny is the best known Filipino in the world. Many people may not know the name of the President of the Philippines but certainly all boxing afficionados around the globe know Manny or at least heard of him.

Not only in the Phils did time stop for Filipinos. I think it is all over the world. Just like us in here in Cayman Islands. Every bars that will be showing the live telecast are full of Filipinos. I heard one restaurant that is being run by a Filipino, only to accomodate the surge of our countrymen that he decide to put the telivision in the parking lot. And imagine that they have to call the police just to control the crowd because they are too jubilant and don’t want to leave the place after the fight. You know, here in Cayman at exactly 12:00 midnight (Sun.) all bars are close and you can not sell any intoxicating beverages after that.

In the late 90’s, a handful of tribal men from Pacquiao’s hometown fought soldiers aggressively to their death with only knives as if blades were superior to bullets.
That rage, together with respect for the opposing arsenal, is what Pacman is made of. One boxer comes to mind - Roberto Duran. It is one thing if you are caught by a perfect textbook punch, and it is another if that fist that comes to you is packed with a conviction to hurt you.
For a great fighter like Erik Morales to fall on his knees in surrender speaks much of how punishing Pacquiao’s rage is. Morales was not knocked out of his senses. Regardless of Erik’s pre-fight shape, Morales would only stop fighting only if the lights were turned out on him (which never happened to him).
If the Pre-Roach Manny Pacquiao’s one-dimensional style carried him through two belts only with a killer left, Manny Pacquaio just added mileage to his career by learning to use his right hand too.
What is amazing is that Pacquiao, veteran as he is, is still moldable. He is blessed with the discernment for who to listen to. That is the key to his future. Today, too many people want to get their hands into how they can benefit from this national treasure’s success. Perhaps a mistake in following bad advice in or out of the ring will cause his downfall. Or perhaps he will be able to discern.

yup that’s true, the time stops whenever Pacman is in the ring!!! i was on a bus during the pacquiao-morales fight. We stopped at the nearest bus stop to witness how pacquiao knocked Morales down…we were all screaming during the fight…. WE reached our destination almost two hours late…but that’s ok, i’d rather be late than not witnessing the revenge of my country!!! GO PACMAN!!
January 28th, 2006 at 3:21 am
he(pacman) will eventually become our President……:-)….
January 28th, 2006 at 3:25 am
manny pacquiao is like a celebrity!
January 31st, 2006 at 9:50 am
come on guys, manny have had all the praises he deserves to get. let’s move on and support the rest of the filipino boxers as well, who has at least the same talents/skills as manny pacquiao has. Then we could have more heroes like manny pacquiao.
they (our government) and all the rest of the media who covered manny’s victorious return to the Philipines should have given the same heroes welcome to the negrense boxer who knocked out his opponent in the 1st round of the fight, don’t you think so?
let us give both of them the same praises as they both brought honor and glory to our country. and i think that is what we call FAIR.

he is the greatest filipino boxer ever. a humble person with a good heart. i hope barrera would ask him for a rematch cause that would be cool to see. specially if he destroys barreras facial features.
February 22nd, 2006 at 7:17 am
HE IS THE MOST SUCCESSFUL MAN EVER IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY FOR THE MUCH MONEY HE HAD EARNED FROM THE FIGHT WE CAN SAY THE HE CAN NOW LIVE AS A PRINCE NOR A KING

Morales WORDS effort is his last weapon so that the grant money intended for him will convince the viewer nor the boxing fanatics as adapted by the major sponsor parang negosyo pero di obipus kasi Filipino tayo at dangal natin ang naka taya.
