Jesse K. Cox: Gatti still a talent

By TSS Predictions January 26th, 2006

Jesse Cox weighs in on this weekend’s HBO bout from Atlantic City between Arturo Gatti and Thomas Damgaard …

Thomas Damgaard picked one hell of an opponent for his U.S. debut. He’s a southpaw, so that should make things interesting, but his 37-0 record likely won’t mean a thing against the likes of Arturo Gatti. No matter how swollen or cut Gatti, whose box set trilogy with Mickey Ward should be out soon on DVD (I wish), may be, he’s still a talent with which to reckon. I reckon Damgaard may be in over his head. A unanimous decision for Gatti.

Gatti has fought enough wars for humankind, the last one a complete pasting by Floyd Mayweather.
Mayweather, who would be a star if he was a heavyweight (re court appearances, assault convictions and bad-mouthing) described Gatti as a C-grade fighter then went and proved it.
Gatti is favoured to beat Damgaard with experts saying he can either outbox or outbash his apparently limited opponent.
What we may see is a repeat of the Pacman and Morales, which shows what happens when a fighter carries too many wars into the ring.
Gatti fights with the Mexican style despite his reinvention as a boxer. This fight might show the demise of another pugilistic hero.
Damgaard might be brave enough and smart enough to stay out of a ring war and keep the pressure on until Gatti’s had it.
If Gatti wins it’s a knockout, otherwise he’s going to do it tough, especially when the flashbacks from previous battles arise.
