Matthew Aguilar: Give Mosley the edge

By TSS Predictions February 22nd, 2006

Over the last two years, Mosley and Vargas have often been punching contradictions. One minute they look good, seemingly on the verge of reclaiming their championship form, and the next they are struggling to beat the David Estradas and Raymond Jovals of the world. Which makes this a tough call. But, it appears as though, physically, Mosley still has the speed and quickness that marked his prime. For “Sugar Shane”, it seems to be a question of confidence – confidence that was ripped away by Vernon Forrest four years ago. Mosley hasn’t really taken a beating, except maybe that first Forrest fight. Vargas has, and his decline may be more a result of cumulative physical damage. He has absorbed the best punches from the best punchers of his generation – Felix Trinidad and Oscar De La Hoya. After those two wars, it would be difficult for anybody to rebound. Based on that, you’ve got to give the edge to Mosley. But Vargas will be there every step of the way, which should make this a good scrap between two former stars – one slightly more faded than the other – in the vein of Hearns-Leonard 2. Mosley by split decision.

I know it will not go pass five rounds. simply put Fernando is just Fernando and hasn’t been ferocious since the Trinidad fight. He got his jaw handed to him and his ass. The type of fighter Mosley is with speed and raw power will be like Mayweather and Gatti unbelievably one sided. Mosley by TKO before the fifth round. BELIEVE THAT

It wont be as easy as that, I do believe Mosley will win but not by KO or TKO. But he should not get careless and cocky. He also lost to Oscar De La Hoya only difference was he was given the decision. It will however be a great fight. Mosley split decision

I cannot see this one going the distance and I cannot see Vargas being able to suddenly resurrect himself in spite of him being in excellent shape for this fight. Mosley isn’t a spring chicken himself but I just feel that Fernando is a damaged and/or ’shot’ fighter. They say that every great fighter has one last great one in him but I can’t see it happening for El Feroz this Saturday night. Mosley by KO inside 9.

This fight will be flow like Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield.
    Vargas is Tyson, Mosely Holyfield.
Vargas will throw bombs. Mosely will counter and box, finding holes in Vargas’s defence while picking off the stronger man’s punches.
I expect the result to be late round KO or TKO to Mosely, if he wants to fight. Chances are Mosely will look to box throughout and eke out an unimpressive decision. He hasn’t carried his power from lightweight and is older than Vargas.
Mosely’s only losses are against guys (Forrest and Wright) who could box well and exploit the fact that Mosely is a short fighter with a short reach.
Vargas jab isn’t in the same ring as Forrest and Wright, which means he has one option, the knockout.
The only things in favour of Vargas is his relative youth compared to Mosely and his power.
I hope Vargas can remain patient and pace himself and try to set up the knockout instead of demanding it, like Tyson.
