Mitch Abramson: Sad to watch them now
By TSS Predictions February 22nd, 2006Recently, HBO replayed some of Mosley and Vargas‘ earlier fights – Vargas against Bazooka and Mosley against Oscar, and it’s amazing how different Vargas and Mosley look now. Vargas used to fight going backward, taking little steps as he whipped lefts and rights at his target. The same goes for Mosley. These guys were great boxer-punchers who were so patient and expert, it’s sad to watch them now. Vargas’ reflexes are really gone. He looks as hesitant as Michael Grant was after Lennox destroyed him: unsure of himself, mentally and physically worn out. The same goes for Mosley. Both follow their opponents around the ring now, struggling to figure out how to win. Now that they’re fighting each other, I expect Mosley to figure out Vargas first. Actually, I think Shane is going to take one look at Vargas and then jump on him when he realizes he has a dead in front of him. Mosley TKO 5.

This fight means much more for Shane than it does for Vargas.
Although Vargas has indicated this fight will catapult him back to the elite status he enjoyed pre-De La Hoya, Shane has not looked anything like the man who defeated De La Hoya twice (albeit by split decisions).
Vargas still dishes out some damage and has taken on tough fighters (which he would of dismantled with ease before, but now struggles to shake the ring rust off), but Shane appears to not hurt his opponents at all and comes off winning decisions over fighters I’ve never even seen before. The burden, in my opinion, lies more on Shane to show he still has the heart to slug it out, as he did in the latter stages of his first encounter with the Golden Boy.
A win over Shane would make Fernando feel he has a chance against the Golden Boy again, since it would be like “beating the man who beat the man…TWICE!”
I think this is going to be a good fight, but I couldn’t disagree with you more, Mitch. This fight has going the distance written all over it, with a reluctant Vargas perplexed by the speed of Mosley, and a more than careful Mosley looking to stay away from the left hook of Fernando. Maybe a knock down or two, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there aren’t any. Mosley by split decision.
