Calzaghe’s Dad Tired Of Hearing Shaw

Joe Calzaghe’s father sick and tired of Gary Shaw

Enzo Calzaghe, the father and trainer of Welsh WBO super middleweight champ Joe Calzaghe, is officially tired of promoter Gary Shaw talking up Lacy during the promotional build up to the March 4 Calzaghe/Lacy clash.

“It’s like it was with Omar Sheika, there’s so much talk,” said the father on the phone from his residence in Wales. “Look at what happened to him.(Calzaghe KOd Sheika in the fifth round of their Aug. 12, 2000 bout in London.) Joe doesn’t need a cheerleader.”

Calzaghe continued his polite mini-rant. “I have eight tapes of Jeff Lacy and I could’ve just watched one round. There’s nothing else to see.”

If Lacy doesn’t roll over his son, Enzo Calzaghe said, then what will he do? “He can’t beat him to the punch, he’s not faster than my son. They have one plan only: ‘I will knock you out.’ He can’t outbox Joe. What’s his Plan B? If he doesn’t knockout Joe, can he stop himself from getting kayoed?”

I’m working on an overview of Calzaghe for this very website that examines the Welshman’s opponents, why he hasn’t tested the US waters, and I’ll also offer my take on who I think wins the March 4 matchup. It is, as they say in the biz, TK.

Meaning, ‘To Come.’

Why don’t they say, ‘TC?’

No clue…

joe calzaghe has never faced a decent opponent in his life.every fighter he has fought was a journeyman.robin reid came so close to beaten joe calzaghe.jeff lacy stopped robin ried.jeff lacy is going to stop joe calzaghe.

  2. Lovell Says:

There are many such comments floating artound the web. Calzaghe, by some accounts, isn’t even a decent boxer, can’t punch and has never fought anyone other than “bums or journeymen.”
I love it, for it shows the widespread ignorance of Joe’s class and means there are going to be some horrified boxing fans following the Lacy defeat. I predict that Calzaghe will gain little respect for winning, with the American press, who will concentrate on Lacy’s poor showing, rather than Joe’s ability to win.

Should be a great fight all the same.

  3. ZL Says:

If Calzaghe wins, Lowell, he will get respect from the US press. Bigger props than he’s ever received for his 17 previous defenses. He never fights outside his backyard, and that’s why American fans are understandably suspect.

Great hungry champions like Hatton seek out the best and the brightest sportlights and are willing to cross the pond to prove it. Regardless, if Calzaghe fairly beats Lacy he will silence the critics.

  4. MattyP Says:

Hatton hardly calls out the best…he is the same exact story as Calzaghe, only with 1 huge win, and 39 other crap fights.

firstly who as lacy ever faced, his best opponent was robin reid and he was 34 yo when he faced lac, and hadnt been world class for a long time. when calzaghe faced reid, reid was 29 and and the top of his game, so i dont think you can compare the 2, lacys last opponent was 38 yo and was beat last time out by a novice, then theres omar sheika lacy faced him when he was on the way down, and had a real hard fight, and was hurt in the 2nd round, calzaghe faced him when he was on the way up, and stop him in 5 rounds, so i dont think you can say calzaghe has faced no one unless you say lacy faced no one as well, 2nd there a lot of american fighter who have never been out of there backyard, james tony, roy jones jr, tarver, hopkins, to name just a couple, so again i think unfair to single calzaghe out.

  6. Shannon Says:

I don’t know about all this Calzaghe talk. I seen one of his fights and even though he won, he didn’t show me any boxing skills. He was just swinging out of control, with no defense. He was even knocked down that fight. If he fights Lacy like that it’s going to be a sad day in England.

I am a bit biased, being Welsh, but i have seen all of joes fights and not of all them have pretty. Joe sometimes lowers himself down to his opponents, but he has always come through. The reason for that is he has his father in his corner to remind who he really is. And that is a world class boxer with hand speedsand combination punching packed with power. I just hope lacy dont get through with his big hook. CMON JOE U GOT THE TALENT SO LET IT SHINE.

  8. The Truth Says:

I’m a big fight fan from the UK and have watched all of Calzaghe’s fights, and have been watching Lacy since his fourth professional fight. No doubt about it, Calzaghe is BY FAR the better boxer. However, Lacy will DESTROY Calzaghe, mark my words…Lacy’s power, determination, activity, youth and hunger will be too much for Calzaghe, who now struggles to make the 168 limit, has been far too inactive in the ring over the last two years, and has had too many serious injuries of late; going into this fight he will have niggling doubts about the hand that he broke recently, and if that hand goes against Lacy he may as well forget it. I have it on GOOD authority that he hasn’t been going full tilt in sparring, so as not to jeopordise the hand…

  9. Frankie D. Says:

It has all the makings of a decent battle. Joe is on the backside of a good career and Lacy is on his way up. If it ends early, it’s Lacy. But the longer it goes the better Joe’s chances if only because he can be an awkward cat in the ring which is frustrating. If Lacy gets frustrated and tries to force things, he may leave himself open to Joe’s underrated power. All in all, it’s Lacy’s fight to lose and Joe really has nothing to lose at this point in his career, which makes him a dangerous opponent.

  10. Bobby D Says:

Looks like Lacy and Calzaghe both have some proving to do. I’m unsure of both fighters skills. I dont think either one of them has fought anybody! They are both suspect fighters until they fight someone on there so called levels.

  11. Chris Says:

I still find it hard to understand why people make comments like ‘He’s not faced any real talent yet,” “Never faced a decent opponent in his life.” So what are you saying? That all lower ranking fighters in all 3 major championships are poor punk ass losers who can’t fight? Because both Lacy and Calzaghe have pulled their way up to the top of their divisions and regardless of what the critics say to get that far and stay up takes some real doing. Yes, you do get poor matchups, and some very questionable decisions made, but to get an easy ride for every matchup in 20+ fights, no chance. If the fights really were that easy then today’s boxing league tables would be as long as your arm and titles would change hands on a weekly basis. They don’t, ask yourself why. One thing for sure, it boils down to who wants it more. My guess is that it will be a points split decision or a draw as it normally ends up for this type of fight.

  12. LTM Says:

Coming from just watching Calzaghe’s performance and utterly destroying lacy, it’s interesting to read some of those comments stating how Calzaghe has no chance. Would any of those thinking Lacy would clean his clock like to comment now?

  13. Super Juey Says:

It was an embarassing mismatch. Granted, Calzaghe looks like a ’slapper’ the way that he throws his punches open-handed at times, but Lacy proved to be a fighter without a plan A let alone a plan B. After 2 rounds it didn’t seem as if Lacy could throw a punch, and frankly the referee could have stopped it after 9 rounds without much debate - Lacy looked finished after 6. Hopefully he will learn from his mistakes as he seems like a genuine guy and I saw enough of him against Robin Reid to think that he was a classy fighter. But for a man who is supposed to be ’superfit’, what was the point in pegging a fight strategy on nailing Calzaghe with one big punch? For Joe, I hope he fights a few more times and proves that he is the best - I’d hate to see him go past his sell-by date because he is the best British boxer of his generation, and he showed that last night. For Lacy, I hope he learns where he went wrong and develops into something more. I couldn’t help feeling that there was something of Tyson around the aura that the press has erroneously built up for him. Let’s hope he doesn’t go the same way, especially as he won’t have the ‘freakshow’ tag to support him.

  14. rjm Says:

well said LTH i would like to hear from some of the people that made those comment as well, if there man enough to admit there was wrong.

  15. The Truth Says:

Yes, I believed that Lacy would DESTROY Calzaghe, and yes, I am man enough to come on here and admit I got it all wrong. I am also man enough to say that Cazlaghe fought a great fight, and Lacy can have no excuses. If you read my post prior to the fight, I made it clear that Calzaghe is BY FAR the better boxer, but I felt that the youthful, powerful Lacy would be too much for Calzaghe, due to his hand injuries and struggles to make the 168 limit. I wish Calzaghe all the best for the future
