Cotto slaughered Branco? Gimme a break!
By Boxing News March 5th, 2006Luca De Franco wonders what fight they were watching
I just saw Miguel Cotto-Gianluca Branco on Italian television. I was an entertaining fight. Both boxers traded good shots, but Cotto was more accurate and faster. The Puerto Rican won because he delivered more damage and had a better defense. This is so different from what I read on another website where they wrote about a one-sided massacre. Hey, did you ever see a real massacre? Obviously not. Get a tape of Ray Mercer vs. Tommy Morrison and you will understand what a real massacre is. Branco was not slaughtered, he fought and lost with dignity.

When will Cotto, the next great PR fighter, fight someone that can do some damage to him? In his last two fights he was lucky to come away with a victory, but many think he’s championship material. His last fight with Branco, a very light puncher, was no challenge, no risk, a light fight with a “soft” opponent.
I’d like to see him fight Kostya Tszyu before he even talks about getting in the same ring with Ricky Hatton. If he gets by Tszyu, then he should be worthy of fighting Ricky Hatton. It would be a worthwhile fight, but I don’t think Cotto will be able handle the pressure that Tszyu and Hatton will bring to him. The two fighters that have put Cotto on the canvass neither have punch nor the aggressiveness that Tszyu or Hatton bring to the ring. It will be a shocker if Cotto can hang in with them, but stranger things have happened in this sport!!

What?!? Fight Tszyu before fighting Ricky Hatton? Why fight the guy who lost to Hatton? What would that prove? Bring on Hatton.

Cotto has the best fighting style I’ve seen in recent years, I feel fighters are dodging him because he is a very technical fighter, with devastating power. When was the last time you saw a TKO from a power punch to the arm? Come on people, give the man some props.

Cotto is lucky that Branco does not know how to sit down on his punches and use power shots on the inside. If he did, Cotto probably would not been able to withstand it. As Cotto has shown in the past, his chin is very suspect. Branco landed quite a few straight rights and left hooks; however, his straigh-up style robs him of any power. Cotto’s handlers know this and that is why he has not faught any of the top punchers or boxer punchers at 140 or 147. Cotto does have an enormous amount of skill, heart, and power; however you cannot teach someone “CHIN.”

Some are saying that Branco was picked as Cotto’s opponent for his lack of punching power.
Let’s not forget that Gianluca Branco was Cotto’s mandatory challenger who, due to an injury, had to pull out of their originally scheduled fight - the fight in which Cotto opted to fight a last-minute replacement - the fight in which Cotto was knocked down for the first time in his career.
So, to say that this fight was hand-picked by Cotto’s manager is not just misleading, it’s simply not true. It was, in fact, the mandatory fight that should have taken place a few months back.
What we are pretty much all in agreement is that Cotto needs to step up to another level of competition. I think Cotto is as ready as he ever will be for the challenge. Should Cotto fight and begin to win the elite of his weight class, then he will have proved himself to be all he is hyped up to be.

I used to be a fan of Cotto’s but ever since he got rocked by Chop Chop they’ve been putting him in with soft opposition. Next it’s the feather-fisted Paulie Malignaggi. I’d love to see Cotto step it up and face Junior Witter. The headline should be called Overrated vs. Underrated.
