Scott Mallon’s Ringside Results on John vs. Marquez

Chris John outworked and outboxed Juan Manuel Marquez in Borneo Indonesia to retain his WBA featherweight title via unanimous decision. Marquez rallied in the late rounds but John nullified the charge with side-to-side movement. Marquez was penalized two points for low blows but they were immaterial. After the fight Marquez and his camp all felt they had done enough to win the fight and they will ask for a rematch in a neutral area.

Judges scores: 116-110, 117-111, 116-122

“Scott Mallon’s Ringside Results on John vs. Marquez”
I take it Scott Mallon was ringside for the bout? Caught news of the bout from the AP brief and Fightnews. Still find it hard to believe. Never seen Marquez charge before. Too bad it wasn’t televised here in the States. Does anyone know if there was a round by round write of the bout? And if so, where?

Is Chris John for real? He has a victory over Derrick Gainer but aside from that he was previously winning over the usual suspects. The fight was not televised here in the Philippines and reports posted on the net were relatively short and mentioned only deductions from low blows by Marquez.

Marquez and his management team have only themselves to blame. There have been previous reports of haggling over money for a Pacquiao rematch. Then he was “forced” to travel half way around the world for chump change. Now he will definitely fall out of the pound per pound list.

I do hope to see more of Chris John outside of Indonesia. Who knows, a Pacquiao fight may be in the horizon. It’s even just a boat ride away.

Yes - I was the only foreign journalist at the fight.

    I’m still in Borneo now.

Thanks for the confirmation, Brave Scott.
What were your thoughts of the fight? Was it like the score’s posted? I only know of Chris John by name, have never seen him fight, that’s why I’m a bit surprised.

Hope you are well, enjoying yourself, and make it home safe.

    Thanks again.

I’ll be waiting for inside stories and a detailed report from Scott Mallon. I have never heard of a major boxing event held in Borneo before. This part of the world is usually seen in National Geographic or Discovery Channel not on ESPN or HBO.

I hope Chris John risks fighting out of his home turf and gets a U.S. fight.

I’m in Malaysia now and will be back in Thailand in around 8 hours. It’s been a long, hard trek but well worth it.

BTW - Sampson Lewcowicz (sp) stated he would recommend Chris John NOT fight in the US at this point. He’s a massive star in Indonesia and would be better served at this point in his career fighting in Australia and Indonesia. More to come…

I saw a tape of the fight this week. I was expecting to see Marquez lose almost every round. To my surprise I only found 2 rounds (3 rounds Max to give to Chris John). This was a robbery in my opinion. John was very ineffective and inactive. Marquez landed the crisper cleaner shots throughtout.

Finally there have been dozens of fans on the internet that have seen it and not a single one of them gave John even 4 rounds. Even some guys with Pac in their avatar who admittitadly hated Marquez thought he won by atleast a couple of points.

    Anybody else seen it?

  8. Ken Hissner Says:

I watched John-Marquez and the only thing John outdid Marquez in was running. Looked like Willie Pastrano running from Harold Johnson knowing all he had to do was go the distance and the decision was his.

  9. Luis luna Says:

Every time we go and fight in these jap countries were always robbed.

  10. Scott Mallon Says:

These Jap countries? Luis - personally I think whenever the “Japs” go to Mexico they get ripped off by these “beaners.” Nice huh?

For all of those who think Marquez won, there are as many if not more who thought John won. I had picked Marquez to win and guess what, I thought he lost. Maybe you had to be there but after the fight it was Marquez who looked banged up and tired and John who was fresh and without a mark. It’s called boxing and fights are scored on a round by round basis. A close fight that could be seen as going either way does not equat a rip off “in these Jap countries. Luis you’re an idiot.
