Cotto: “It was a tough fight!”
By Boxing News March 6th, 2006Miguel Cotto on Gianluca Branco: “It was a tough fight.”
These words were pronounced by Miguel Angel Cotto and published by every Italian newspaper: “It was a tough fight. I understood that Branco had a problem at his left arm and started hitting it. I think he won the third round. Every time he jabbed me, I was in trouble. The Puerto Rican words confirm that the fight was “not a walk in the park.

He’s fought many great fighters.
He’s demolished Sosa - who Mayweather had a tough time outpointing. He knocked out Corley, who Judah danced around with in a boring fight. He easily beat N’dou - who despite loosing the decision, beat Sharmba Mitchell.
So he’s fought outstanding fighters. But I think the schedule June fight with Paul Maglignaggi is a step backwards. That guy has zero power.

Yo Vinny numb nuts put a sock in it!!!!!!! Everyone knows no one runs faster than Floyd!!!!! Cotto never runs or backs up in any of his fights, even when he’s hurt he takes the punches and comes back to demolish opponents. Cotto has never ran away from a fight, on the other hand Floyd waited till Judah lost to Baldomir before taking the fight.

OK - Cotto is a good fighter and will one day be great. He knows he is not ready for someone like Mayweather, but soon will be. A few more rounds in the ring will certainly help polish his style. He still takes too many punches and needs to work on his movement.
On a sidenote - I just learned that touchgloves.com is looking for contributors.

Cotto demonstrated what he does best; he is devestating body puncher and is an extremely accurate puncher. That said, I see weaknesses that will come back to haunt him against the very best. He drops his left hand and was hit with many clean right hands by the light-hitting Branco. And, he is quite hittable with other shots, too. He’s fortunate that Branco can’t punch because I don’t doubt for a moment that he would have been rocked if that were he case. Also, his body had a soft quality too it. I know he struggles with his weight a great deal and his appearance suggest to me that he may have cut weight the “wrong” way. He probably belongs at welterweight but never the less he should really avoid ballooning up in weight between fights. However, he does make for exciting fights and I look forward to his matches against stiffer competition. Of note, Ricky Hatton also blows up between fights but he seems to prepare properly by taking his time with long camps and not starving himself. Thus far he has entered the ring in peak condition.

Cotto is what he is.A very, very good boxer, hell never ever beat Mayweather(but niether will anyone else).Hatton would destroy him,as would Tszyu. He would beat most others but that chin will betray him at some point.

Big Rob:
Big on talk, small on knowledge. Mayweather accepted the fight with Judah far in advance of the Baldomir fight. When Judah lost, and opponents like your boy Cotto were “unavailable” to fight Mayweather (that includes Hatton and Margarito) and Mayweather was left with no one other than Judah to proceed with for the PPV date in April, he accepted Judah for less money and with no real upside for his career. Good points on Cotto - he doesn’t back up, and if he doesn’t learn to box more and fight less, he will not be long for your world. Enjoy him while you can - if he ever faces off with Mayweather, it’s “adios” and “buenas noches” to Miguel. While Arum is setting the pace, Cotto is in fact running that course and is wise to do so.

Johnny buddy Big talk is right, for a big man, if I recall correctly Floyd and Judah were talking about a fight with one another in ‘05 but “Pretty Boy” could not be sattisfied with a big enough purse!!! I call junk like that Running from a fight, he wanted more money because he felt threatened and is not willing to take a real risk with a good boxer. Mayweather fought nobody (Yes, that includes his bout with overmatched Arturo Gatti), I can honestly say that this is the first time “Pretty Boy Floydâ€? has decided to stop calling out elite fighters, and actually fight one. Your crazy if you think Coto will lose easily against Maywheather. Pretty Boy has never called out Cotto, Margarito, or even a well deserving of a rematch Castillo, but when he does is more likely to be “Bye” and “Good Nachos” to Floyd holla back!!!!!!!!!!

The best fighter in the world doesn’t “call out” anyone - he simply pursues the best fights for the most money and takes care of business. As for a rematch with Castillo - well, Rob, I guess they snuck that one by you. If Mayweather fought a guy he already beat twice, then you would likely say he is taking the easy route and “ducking” Cotto and Margarito. If and when Cotto and Margarito do enough to justify putting their names in the same sentence as Mayweather, then the economics will be right and the fights will happen. Until then, you just have to suffer Mayweather making every fight look like a mismatch because HE IS JUST THAT MUCH BETTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE. It’s OK not to like it - it will just make your life that much more unpleasant and frustrating for the next five years.

Johnny H. Man do you even know anything about boxing son! To set the record straight, Mayweather got rocked by Castillo in the first fight and went the distance both times, even though everyone who saw the fight knew that Castillo won but pretty punk Mayweather got the decision because of the bigger name at the time. If boxing was judged the right way and not corrupt like it is, the Floyd would not be undefeated. Stop lying to yourself and everyone else just like Floyd is and accept that he’s a chump that lost to Castillo, is scared of Margarito, and would get beat by Hatton, and possibly Cotto (with a few more top fights). You guys that say Margarito is a nobody then Floyd should fight the nobody and show that he’s a man, it would be a great fight.

Paul Malignaggi will destroy Cotto. Cotto is made for him and will not be able to hit the lightning fast Malignaggi. He fights like Sweatpea and is too hard to hit. Paulie will do it for all the Brooklyn boys so all you bet on Paulie. He is a very respectful humble kid when I met him at Gleason’s he was a true dedicated warrior. Good Luck Paulie!

First of all hi to everyone. lets face the facts people im a big fan of boxing and follow up on it everyday and watch boxing alot. anyhow in concern with cotto hes one of the top fighters in the world but i believe he still needs to better his defence and body movements.Hatton will have no chance against cotto NON!!! heres why, althogh hatton is a warrior in the ring and has great stamina he is soft on the chin and he does not box that good. hes always open for big punches and he gets cut fairly easy, also being a fairly bad descision to fight cotto because hes kind of a brawler and cotto is a great and accurate counter-puncher my opinion hatton down before 5.

in concern of maywather ok yes is the best fighter in the world now but at the same time no one has tested his chin i know…hes quick and got a great defence but every dog has its day and sooner or later he will meet his match until then hes unbeatable…….by the way im a big big fan of cotto im from the same hometown where he comes from and seen him many times and have a great respect for him as a pesron and boxer. but i have to agree with my fellow friends here and say hes still a litle green for mayweather.

Miguel Cotto is a very dirty fighter who would always punch his opponents’ penis to win the fight. I think he better fight with the animals in the jungle.
