Joey Knish: Brewster will land

Joey the K weighs in on Saturday’s Lamon Brewster bout

I haven’t seen much of Sergei Lyakhovich in a while, which is merely a fact of him not fighting recently. It has been almost 1.5 years since he fought, and beating on Dominick Guinn is nothing impressive. As was the case for Lamon Brewster against Luan Krasniqi, Lamon can be beat with a steady diet of jabs and hard right hands, provided they are followed with movement and discipline. That will likely be where the “White Wolf” gets into trouble, trying to use consistent movement to stay away from Brewster’s monster left hook. It may be a matter of time, or Brewster may rush Lyakhovich from the opening bell to give him a quick rust check, but Brewster will land the punch he needs to stop Lyakhovich before the final bell.

As of yet, although I totally agree with you concerning your prediction, Joey, I still haven’t seen Brewster step up in competition. Could it be that the WBO doesn’t have any real good fighters in its rankings? I think Brewster and/or his management, are the main cause of why so many boxing fans find he is underrated. Lamon or his manager can say that he is being avoided like the plague because of his knock out power, but as I look at the rankings on the WBO website, I see boxers like Toney, Peter, Brock, and Briggs that can easily provide Brewster with much more respect and money than he is getting now – even if he loses to them! With Toney out of the picture trying to get a rematch with Hasim, Klitscho busy trying to get a title from another underrated champion, Chris Byrd, that would leave Samuel Peter and Calvin Brock – both of which are splendid pay-per-views/big money fights. I know that I won’t be interested in seeing another Brewster fight again until he steps it up in the competition.

Nelson happens to be dead-on with his assessment. I was just going through some old fight programs and it’s amazing how often the best fought the best. If Mr. Brewster retired tomorrow, the two names that leap out at you (of his wins) will in time fade. Lamon has been around long enough to where he should have fought some of the marquee guys.

It seems the division is getting thinner by the minute.

That said, I used to see Lamon in the gym back when Bill trained him, and engaged him in conversation many times. The gentleman always came across as a class act. I’d like to see him fight Chris. I believe only then would we close any ground on who is the legitimate heavyweight champion.
