Wednesday Night Fights Report: Allan Green Gets Tested

By Michael Woods April 26th, 2006

Allan Green’s passing grade

It was supposed to be a gimme, a quickie blastout to impress ESPN boxing nation enroute to a high-profile bout in the near future.

It didn’t go as scripted for Allan Green, the super middleweight prospect, on the Wednesday Night Fights broadcast this evening from Oklahoma. In a wild third round, Green was in dire straits as “overmatched” opponent Donnie McCrary put him on the deck, right after the favored Oklahoman put him down on the canvas.

Green, who’s supposedly in line to fight Joe Calzaghe this summer, finally put McCrary (17-3-2) away in the sixth round at the Buffalo Run Casino. He raises his record to 20-0, and more importantly for his development, learned valuable lessons on this occasion: keep your freakin’ hands up, and don’t underestimate anyone at any time.

The shocking third was great theater, made all the more enjoyable by Joe Tessitore’s frenzied call. Tess hit 120 decibels as he marveled at the turn of events.

Also, during the show, viewers learned that Teddy Atlas had been offered the opportunity to steer the Sam Peter ship, but turned down the gig when Peter wouldn’t move east. Jesse Reid is instead the new face working for Team Peter. Look for the big Nigerian to move his hands more than he has previously when he fights Julius “Timberrrrr!” Long on Friday Night Fights this Friday in Connecticut.

And it was refreshing to hear straight talk from a promoter, as Peter’s handler, Dino Duva, acknowledged that he isn’t certain his fighter is truly certain about the sacrifices that must be made in training and preparation in order to secure a heavyweight crown.

Allan Green, at 6 feet two and underweight at 162 pounds, poses a most awesome physical threat to any middleweight. Sixteen wins and no losses, with thirteen knockouts had him as the odds on favorite to make short work of “overmatched” Donny McCrary. The first two rounds appeared to prove the prediction as Green, with at least a four inch reach advantage, seemed to be able to measure McCrary for lefts and rights to the head and body. A body right, followed by a left to the liver sent McCrary down for an eight count. Green has him…right? Never come to another professional fighter with your hands down; as Green was soon to learn. Desparate rights and lefts from McCrary sent Green wobbling like a drunken sailor around the ring and to the floor. After an eight count, Green survived the round, recovered to take a TKO in the sixth round. McCrary will be kicking himself for not putting away this up-and-coming “phenom” when he had the chance and time to do it. I saw a match (can’t remember who was involved) on tv where the dominant fighter was cocky enough to let his hands hang at his waist, daring the other guy to touch him. The referee stopped the fight to admonish the cocky fighter, who, not paying attention, was sucker-punched for a one-punch knockout. I believe this guy was a possible contender in his weight division. Regardless of his record, a “professional” fighter has learned at least the rudiments of boxing and can pose a threat to any careless opponent. Unlike team sports, and similar to tennis, a fighter (player) is only as good as his preparation for the current battle and his mental control throughout the match. We have all seen how the tide has turned (indeed, several times) in a boxing or tennis match. It ain’t over till the last bell or point.

Green has the unusual habit of looking at his feet during throwing combinations, not like being glove shy but almost like a Turet’s like tic. Interesting….I watched him last summer in Norman.

  3. EJY Says:

Green was rocked! He is a talented kid but getting that hurt buy that caliber of fighter is a bad sign on his long term prospects. The chin checker, Jaidon Codrington, must be kicking himself after watching that performance. He knows now that if he caught Green first he would have scored the first round KO in their fight. Green is fortunate he wasn’t in there with a real puncher last night or he would have suffered his first loss. Still, he’s an exciting explosive fighter that people will watch.

I think Green has the potential to be a Champ, but has to get over himself first. In the pre fight interviews, he was refering to him self in the third person and was very cocky. It’s way to early in his career to act like Bernard Hopkins(who always refers to him self in third person). If he keeps his head in it and doesn’t get over confident, he will be a major player in super middleweight. Also he is way to “green” to fight Joe C. especially in England!

  5. Frank Says:

Green had better be carefull, and I for one won’t be betting on him. If you watch closely, you will see that one punch in the third was the only one before, or after the knockdown that Green got nailed with. I think there are some defensive problems there. Either way, I think Green just lost some marketability, and would be surprised if Calzaghe agreed to fight him this summer!!

  6. Ed Ziemelis Says:

Mr.Peres must of saw Peden-Campbell. Campbell did not protect himself
    and was smoked.

  7. Nelson Feliciano Says:

Green is still a WORK IN PROGRESS. He needs to work on defense better, since those that have fast hands tend to think less about defense than they should. His confidence is high, but he really should have a few more fights before chasing a championship. The power is there, the skills are there, but the “listen to your trainer and don’t get over-confident” character isn’t.

  8. MONICA Says:

To Amy Green , your comment about Allan looking down , as thou he has tics was very rude and uncall for.

    From Allan Mother

  9. Sherry Says:

Allan Green is the best. He has the confidence and discipline to keep him rising to the top. I look for a world championship in his career. He is boxing with a BANG!!!

  10. BEAR KING Says:
