ESPN’s Brian Kenny On Sam Peter

By Michael Woods April 27th, 2006

Brian Kenny’s take on the Nigerian Nightmare

ESPN studio stalwart Brian Kenny will be looking at Samuel Peter’s physique when Peter stands across from towering Julius Long on Friday Night Fights from Connecticut on Friday night (8 PM Eastern).

Peter (25-1, 21 KOs) has fought once (UD10 win over Robert Hawkins) since his Sept. 24, 2005 loss (UD12) to Wladimir Klitschko. He weighed 243 in that effort and 250½ against Hawkins.

Kenny thinks dropping a few would do wonders for Peter. “I’ll be interested in his weight,” Kenny says. “We’ll see the shape he’s in. I think he has the tendency to be lazy with his weight. If it’s high then maybe it says he didn’t learn that much from his loss.”

Even if Peter isn’t as slim and trim as he could or should be, Kenny believes he’ll handle the 7-2 Long (14-7, 12 KOs). “Peter’s too big and strong for him,” Kenny says.

Long story short: Peter and Toney could bounce low-fat recipes off each other and they’ll see the in-ring benefits. “You have to get in shape to get your feet in position,” Kenny says. “Peter’s in the same position as Toney. Peter couldn’t get into position to finish Klitschko.”

  1. aaron, uk. Says:

Sam Peter is another case of a heavyweight with a big punch but limited skills. I really cant see him going far , and if he does its only because the state the division is in…

  2. Bobby D Says:

Peter is a fly by night African fighter who has no boxing skills “what so ever” It will be a miracle if he wins a belt let alone keep it.

  3. The Commish Says:

The winner of Peter vrs. Toney will fight the winner of Rahman vrs. Maskaev for the WBC Title. What for?

    Rahman - WBC
    Klitschko - IBF
    Lyakhovich - WBO
    Valuev - WBA

What the heck is Rahman fighting Maskaev for when he says he wants to unite the titles? What the heck is Klitschko fighting Briggs for when he says he wants to unite the titles? Somebody should call them on this and ALL the news sources should be calling ALL of the champs COWARDS!!!! and keep calling them that until they fight each other! UNITE THE DANG TITLES!!!!

    Rahman vrs. Klitschko
    Lyakhovich vrs. Valuev

    Then

Winner of fight 1 vrs. winner of fight 2

    It’s real easy!

THEN fight Sam Peter for a big payday. And I think Peter just might win. Then fight Calvin Brock(who is extremely boring but undefeated). Then fight James Toney. Then fight Sultan Ibragimov.

Sam Peter has skills and he will knock the heck out of James Toney.
