When Will Joe Calzaghe Fight Again?
By Michael Woods April 28th, 2006Who’s next for Joe Calzaghe?
Joe Calzaghe, the southpaw super middleweight from Wales, shocked the boxing world when he utterly outclassed heavily hyped muscleman Jeff Lacy on March 3. So his next fight is more eagerly anticipated on our shores than ever before.
It looks like fight fans will get a chance to see if the magnificent performance against Lacy was a aberration, or if Calzaghe, age 33, is truly the savage science master craftsman we saw in March. Promoter Frank Warren has decided on July 8 for the Wales pugilist’s next outing. It will be a homecoming bash, with the match taking place in a Wales stadium, according to The Western Mail’s Phil Blanche.
The only thing missing? An opponent. Word was that Allan Green, the Oklahoma super middleweight, was in the running for the summer shot at Calzaghe. Green won his ESPN Wednesday Night Fight against Donnie McCrary but hit the deck in the third round and was very nearly out on his feet. He didn’t look ready for a crack at the Calzaghe (41-0, 31 KOs) who tutored Lacy on March 3.
Antonio Tarver is a no-brainer for Calzaghe, but he’s knee-deep in prep for Bernard Hopkins on June 10.
Feel free to head into our Forum, and offer ideas to Warren on who you think Calzaghe should fight next.

First off, Joe C. is as an exciting of fighter that many have not seen. I think he created a buzz with the casual boxing fan with his destruction of Jeff Lacy. What he needs to do is build off of the buzz and fight another big name opponent- he’s no spring chicken (33) and I think he needs to either fight someone like a Glenn Johnson, then fight a Tarver, Winky or Jermain Taylor.
I DREAD thinking that his next fight could be against a Montell Griffin type of opponent.

I agree with christian, Glen Johnson would be a very good opponent but there is one better than that and Frank Warren knows it, Clinton Woods. You on the other side of the pond may not know much about Clinton but he is the one who crushed your very own Rico Hoye and has won other big fights on the U.k scene. The only obstacle is whether or not it would sell in the U.S of A. GET THE FIGHT MADE FRANK, YOU WUSS!!!!

I agree with fighting Woods or Johnson next. I also think he should call out Taylor if he makes it past the Winkster.

I’m excited to see Joe C. come over to the states. I’ve never seen Clinton Woods fight but the problem here in the states is that, although he is a good fighter, people only know about him here from his lost to RJJ.
Johnson vs Calzaghe would be such an exciting fight and it would definitely put Joe on the map in the US.
As Aaron mentioned the only obstacle in the way is WARREN!

I think he need to fight Allan Green because Green is 1 of the best fighters and boxing right now. Joe C. needs to give him a title fight real soon cause my boy Green is ready to be the super middleweight CHAMP. So when it happens i will be their to witness that joe C. will not have the championship belt after this fight so i hope they will give him the chance to be the best super middleweight boxer. After he take the title people will talk about tulsa, oklahoma cause we are coming up and the game

Joe,
You should opt to fight the winner of Mundine v Green , this is this biggest fight in Aus history with a gate of 40k people . both boys will be cashed up after this fight and Mundine is allowing Green 2 get 4 x his biggest payday ever. ( Danny Green should thank his lucky stars) Joe should put his belt up against the wiiner and cash in before retiring

I love the way u yanks come on and give joe a hard time, do u not realise he has not lost a proffesional fight. Who ever he fights he will beat, 41 - 0, 31 by k.o. speaks for itself. I hope he goes to america kicks your crappy fighters asses and retires the best boxer that ever lived (already proven as he is the longest ever unbeaten champion).

Calzaghe knows that “pay day” is the sweet science for a cap on a stellar boxing career. The fights that bring in the cash for his retirement would be Winky Wright, Jermaine Taylor, Antonio Tarver or even Bernard Hopkins. Otherwise the Brit is wasting his time. None of the existing fighters besides the ones I have mentioned in Middle,Super Middle or Light Heavy will put fans in the seats. Besides in my eyes Calzaghe will have to convincingly beat a Winky,Taylor,Tarver of Hopkins to truely be called a legend and a all time Hall of Fame great. Until then Calzaghe will just be another Brit champ over seas who never fought anybody significant to call himself a true great. Jeff Lacy was a bum and was destined to have his hat handed to him by anybody who could “half a$$” box. All Calzaghe showed me in the fight with Lacy is that ” he might be considered” in an elite class of fighters. With this now obvious and proven by Calzaghe. He now needs to step up to the plate get paid and take his American a$$ whoopin like a man from a true champ then step aside and enjoy his retirement. Otherwise Calzaghe is nothing but a paper champion who has fought nothing but mediocre fighters - bums. I wasn’t impressed with Calzaghe before Lacy and still not impressed - Lacy is and was an inexperienced bum who couldnt bust his way out of a paper bag to squash a grap. If Calzaghe has the heart enough to step in the ring with Winky,Taylor,Tarver or Hopkins and beats them - any of them!!. Then Calzaghe will be definately considered a true boxing great because he will have beaten a true great American Champion. Until then “let’s keep it real folks -Brits” - Calzaghe is nothing more then a paper champ!!

i love all these people who say lacy was nothing but a bum in hindsight when all you ever heard before the fight with lacy was how calzaghe would be KTFO inside 3 rounds if calzaghe does fight allan green on july 8 it would be a decent fight but it wont last long

jeff lacy came to the uk expecting an easy night. sure having destroyed Robin Reid, who had taken Calazghe to points, the result looked like a foregone conclusion. what happened proved to be why calzaghe has been ducked for so many years. a one sided contest which firmly stamped calzgahe as a force in boxing. of course its easy to match a super fight now, but these names being touted eg bernard hopkins, theyve dodged calzaghe before and i dare say will do so again, brushing him off as a paper champion. his display against lacy, despite how poor a boxer lacy is, was top quality…

Gotta agree with Bobby D,,,Calzaghe needs to fight one of the fighters he mentions,,preferably Tarver or Winky,,,theyre the only two who can give him a fight,,Calzaghe would dominate the others too easily,,,and SXXT ,since when does Calzaghe owe Hopkins a meal ticket back to the table, the man is well passed it,,but which ever its funny seeing a Brit kick ass on these american evaders and for all those american doubters, after Calzaghe wins his homecoming fight which looks ever more like clinton woods ( unfortunatley he’ll get well hammered,,not in anywhere near calzaghes class ) just watch which man will be the one prepared to cross the atlantic and hand out the whoopings. Too many americans darent cross over to Britain to fight but are the first to run their mouths ,,,,,haha and which of these american chumps will price em selves out of a fight because they know Joe is the real deal.

i don’t think hopkins is really wanting to fight calzaghe. he will most likely bail out like he did before. i think joe should go after the winner of taylor pavlik II they are younger stronger opponents. hopkins is just full of crap he needs to retire. a white boy will never beat b-hop because e’s to busy running scared.
