Oscar Narrows List Of Potential Opponents
By Michael Woods May 19th, 2006De La Hoya rejects fights with Hatton and Trinidad
We can scratch off Ricky Hatton and Tito Trinidad from the list of prospective opponents for Oscar De La Hoya.
The 33-year-old boxer, coming off one of the most impressive showings of his career against Ricardo Mayorga on May 6, told the LA Times’ Steve Springer that Hatton is too small and Trinidad is too large to make a sensible foe for the Golden Boy’s next outing.
That leaves Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Winky Wright as the most likely matchups for Oscar, who is getting input from some family members that retirement as an active boxer would be a wise decision.
The bet here is that retirement is not even a slim possibility, not after ODLH looked so focused and effective against The Managuan Mouth two weeks ago…

I’m almost led to believe that the controversy behind a DLH/Mayweather fight, with Mayweather Sr. training his son’s opponent, is now a non-issue for this fight to take place. It seems that the outcry from the die-hard boxing fans has both De La Hoya and Mayweather all but a done deal. With Wnky looking to best Taylor, I think the only open option right now is either a title defense or a mega fight with Mayweather. Like you said, retirement right now is not a realistic option. I guess a end-of-the-year, record breaking PPV will have these two fighters counting their blessings for years to come.

Oscar please don’t retire right now it’s not time yet I say go after Floyd one:because Floyd Jr. has even said he thinks he can beat Oscar bad and two: he said he thinks Floyd Sr. is not such a good trainer and has made Oscar a boring fighter so I say fight him Oscar because when you beat him because I know you could you would shut up everybody including Floyd that has looked down on you and has doubted you prove everybody wrong one more just one more.

I think Oscar can knock Mayweather out. He may not be as fast as Floyd, but he is a great technical fighter who responds VERY well to talkative opponents(Bernard Hopkins notwithstanding because he was just BIGGER and just as good technically). I don’t think Floyd can take Oscar’s punch, but he will be very difficult to hit. However, Oscar is the VERY BEST FINISHER IN THE GAME, BAR NONE!!! He also has a good set of whiskers so Mayweather has no chance of knocking him out. It’s going to take about 8 or 9 rounds, but when Oscar lands a clean shot( it CAN be done, as evidenced by a one-dimensional Zab Judah REPEATEDLY cleaning Mayweathers clock) bye-bye undefeated record and hello greatest-of-all-time discussions.

Forget all the blabbering; retirement, Maywheather sr, Trinidad or Wright. Everybody knows that boxing today is all about money. And the money is: De La Hoya vs Pretty Boy Floyd somewhere at the end of september, with at least 15 millions for each of the actors.

I am a big boxing fan and I would kill to see Oscar fight Pretty boy flloyd. If Oscar wins it erases all his loses because he beat a fighter better that Trindad, better than Mosley and better than Hopkins. Plus the fact in real boxing fans de la hoya only lost two fights mosley-oscar1 and hopkins. Hopkins was just a bad move, hopkins was way too big for oscar but you know oscar always ready to fight the best. the best now is Mayweather, no questions asked!! Just do it for all the fans that helped you make those millions. Give back to your fans, this would be one helluva going away present.

oscar fighting floyd would revitalize the game. and even if oscar loses, besides being compensated handsomely, he would be doing a mitzvah. and who’s to say he loses?

i agree with everyone the best bet for DLH is to fight the pretty boy for the simple fact… money thats what DLH needs if he is thinkin about retirement, one last BIG payday. But i dnt agree with DLH walkin away with the victory just because maywether is in his prime and he has youth on his side. Maby if… not wait IF DLH was in his prime he would lick the pretty boy but maywether will be too sharpe and too fast. Maywether win by majority desision no way could the pretty boy knock m out.

Money, money, money. Writght vs DLH would’t sell half of the PPV than DLH vs The Pretty Boy. Stop the nonsense. Winky’s a hell off a boxer but what a boring thing to watch.

Seems I’m late to the party gentlemen - De La Hoya is a true champion for making this fight a reality. One thing I can say about De La Hoya he has never ducked the big money fights! From a history books perspective for De La Hoya. I say this fight is a bad fight for the Golden Boy Hall Of Famer. He couldnt beat Sugar Shane - though I felt he beat Trinadad hands down. Both were two different fighters. You see gents - De La Hoya can beat the Trinadads and any other fighter who has comparable or lessor skill sets. The fights that easily demonstrate where De La Hoya skill level caps off were Mosely and Hopkins. Though De La Hoya was game and held his own fighting both men. De La Hoya’s skill level couldnt take him over the top. I personally always felt bias about the Shane victories over De La hoya. Frankly I’m not very impressed with Shane Mosley at all. I knew De La Hoya was bighting off more than he could chew with Hopkins. Yet the true champion De La Hoya has always been reminds me of the old school greats who never ducked anybody. With that stated “alone” makes De La Hoya one of the all time boxing greats and in my eyes the greatest Mexican fighter ever to put on the boxing gloves! Styles make fights and though I see De La Hoya giving Pretty Boy a run for his money. Mayweather will focus his strategy on the one fight style De La Hoya just doesnt have the absolute skills to tame - and that is masterful blinding deciplined speed. De La Hoya showed how speed could trouble him in the Shane Mosley fights. Shane is not as fast as Mayweather and doesnt hit as hard as Mayweather. Though The Golden Boy will perform at the highest level of his stellar boxing career - he is also at the twilight of his great Hall Of Fame Career and will be a few bullets shy to this gun fight. It will prove to be the right payday fight at the wrong time - maybe a De La Hoya 5 years ago against today’s Mayweather would of been different - I’d give The Golden Boy a true shot to win it if that were the case. But in reality it’s not but at least they’ll both be carrying big cases filled with money to the bank! and hey let’s face it - that’s what this fight is all about besides the glory that De La Hoya thrives on. Mayweather over De La Hoya by decision 8 rounds to 4 Mayweather. If it were not for such a fat payday on this one. I would liked to have seen De La Hoya avenge his Trinadad loss that he clearly dominated when they first fought. Retire and focus on becoming as great a promoter as he was a boxer. No matter what happens in the Mayweather fight De La Hoya is the greatest and smartest Mexican fighter who ever put on boxing gloves!!

This fight will live or die by how realistic PBF is, any claims of wanting 50-50 should be left at the door. But I suspect his ego may try to intervene when it’s pretty obvious PBF doesn’t do the numbers he seems to think he does.
DLH v PBF
It could be beautiful, but if DLH wins, can he really retire and STAY retired. I dont’ know so much.

I attended the Boxing Writers Association of America convention to be a support for my good friend, Alex Ramos and while there was able to attend the De LaHoya fight with Alex. Amazingly, it seemed Oscar walked into a time tunnel and came out fresher, stronger, and quicker. I have to admit that Mayorga is ‘not’ by any means a talent like Floyd Mayweather but in reality Mayweather would be the favorite in this fight…younger, quicker, good whiskers, incredible defense…..however, when you are dealing with motivation, heart, and desire to ‘win’ Oscar seems to have a slight edge. It could be interesting. By far, one of the greatest comeback ‘fights’ in the last two decades was Oscar vs Ricardo. Gonna be good…and good for boxing.

i agree with everyone’s basic assessments here.
if oscar fights winky (assuming winky gets by jermaine taylor), he gets his chance at the middleweight title which he wants so much.
both fighters would fight a tactical fight with subtlties dictating the outcome. i think the fight would be close with DLH’s power being a distinct advantage against winky’s superior defensive skills. both fighters are near mirror images of each other excepting that one is a southpaw. the decision could go either way.
as for oscar against PBF, how much punch does mayweather bring with him up to 154? speedwise, floyd has the edge but how well will floyd handle the difference in power from DLH at the higher weight? if floyd has one weakness it’s someone getting inside and going to his body thereby keeping floyd from shooting out his piston-like jab and sharp righthand. floyd has to control the distance between him and his opponent in order to get his rhythm and control the fight.
again it’s a tactical fight and probably a more entertaining fight than against winky. either way, i’d pay to see the outcome.

Hatton ain’t smaller than PBF (who used to be a junior lightweight remember that) but still too small for De La Hoya… WHAT!

Who cares about Ricky Hatton? Didn’t he just get beat up by a nobody?

If De La Hoya vs Mayweather doesnt happen De La Hoya will fight a B leval fighter for a title or retire mayweather needs to fight Margarito for respect and not being called a dodger but will most likely fight somebody less of a danger

de la hoya is scared of fighting tito trinidad because he knows he will lose again.
