Diego Corrales Ready For Castillo

By Boxing News May 30th, 2006

Corrales’ trainer, Joe Goossen, checks in from LA

After an anti-climatic rematch between Jose Luis Castillo and Diego Corrales after what was one of the greatest fights of all-time, the two combatants will square off one last time for the lightweight championship. That is if Castillo can actually make the 135-pound limit without the help of any scale tippers in his corner. Last time he didn’t come close to making the weight (138½ lbs.) and this will definitely be his last fight at lightweight so we’ll have to wait in see how he looks come Friday. Diego Corrales is set to leave his Los Angeles training camp and head to Vegas Tuesday evening for the anticipated showdown. Despite living a few miles from the strip, Corrales will stay with his team at Caesars. Joe Goossen says his fighter is ready to go and looks better than ever. They will hit the gym Wednesday and possibly Thursday for a light workout and to go over their fight strategy. Corrales is determined to redeem himself after being stopped in their last encounter and seems eager to show boxing fans that he’s the better man and can conquer Castillo in this the most defining moment of his career.

CASTILLO IS TO STRONG FOR HIM AND HE IS ALSO A BETTER BOXER IF IT COMES DOWN TO IT

Let’s hope that the ko loss to Castillo did not take too much out of Corrales mentally. He fought Castillo’s fight in the first match and came off the floor to win in dramatic fashion. Even Frazier-Ali had an average 2nd bout of three. Hopefully the 3rd time is a charm and maybe the winner will fight Freitas.

i look for corrales to mix things up a little bit like he did against joel casamayor 2. standing toe to toe might not be the best plan of attack but there will be moments where that will happen. corrales should box more making castillo come to him and then the toe to toe action begins.

i agree with mingo that castillo is too strong for corrales but i don’t agree about him being a better boxer. it’s not castillo’s style to box. if so, only to get inside and slug.

corrales should use his height and reach to his advantage and hope that he can catch castillo coming in. castillo will adjust and put on the pressure and try to force corrales into another brawl more than likely in the later rounds if corrales is ahead on the scorecards.

otherwise, i look for castillo to knockout corrales again this time in the later rounds.

I totally disagree, Corrales is the hardest hitting fighter at a 135 pounds. It showed himself well going against Castillo (147 pounds last fight) and I believe that he wants to show Castillo a thing or 2 for the stunt last fight.

FYI: Reports are that Castillo might be heavy again.

I do want both to throw caution to the wind and go at it Round 1. Corrales won’t be afraid to bang with Castillo unless he is not over that last KO (Big Question). We all know each figther reacts differently and in theory Corrales shouldn’t be affected by it because of the weight excuse. I think it will motivate him much more than hurt him in the fight.

Castillo will be forced to bang with Corrales because that is the only way he can win. He can punch with the best of them ever in the 135 weight class but if you need to resort to those methods to win it speaks volume to the respect you have for the other fight. Plus, it tells the world that the only way I can you him is by cheating (ex. Liston vs Ali 1 round 4, etc).

If this fight goes late like I expect and with Castillo looking overweight 3 days prior to the fight, I believe that Castillo will slow down and be punished by Corrales.

    Corrales TKO 9 Castillo
