Paul Williams Wants Margarito After Giving Notice That He’s A Welterweight Power
By Michael Woods May 31st, 2006Williams wants to fight Margarito, Gatti, Baldomir, Mayweather
Two jockey-sized guys were the main event, but it was Paul “The Punisher” Williams who provided viewers with a jolt on Saturday night, as the newest welterweight to be reckoned with dismantled previously undefeated Argentine knockout artist Walter Matthysse on HBOs “Boxing After Dark.â€?
Referee Jack Reiss stepped in and mercifully stopped the onslaught at 1:56 of the tenth round in a scheduled 12-round battle for the vacant WBO, NABO and WBC-USNBC welterweight titles.
With the victory, the 24-year-old Augusta, GA native not only registered his 30th consecutive win to start his career and 22nd win via knockout, but his dominant performance skyrocketed his stock among the world’s top welterweights – young or veteran alike.
The lanky, 6-1 Williams has been drawing comparisons as a southpaw version of Thomas “Hitman Hearns. But his promoter, Dan Goossen, points out that Williams established his own identity as a major force in the sport of boxing.
“Antonio Margarito is the fight I want now, said Williams of his next opponent. “Then bring on Arturo Gatti, Carlos Baldomir and Floyd Mayweather. It doesn’t matter. I train too hard. I want to fight somebody big every month of the year.
The kid moves well, throws a million punches a round, has remarkable stamina, has solid preservation instincts when he gets in trouble and has a chin he can depend on; in short, there’s a lot to be excited about in Williams, and a tip of the cap goes to Goossen, for seeing the talent and bringing Williams into the fold.

In my opinion, THE PUNISHER is ready to step up for a big name fight. Now having such a high record he has proven at least with stats that he comes close to other big names. Williams surely has a style that would frustrate a lot of guys. His never ending punches, his long arms, his chin, and his knowledge of defense is awesome. Margarito would be great for his first big name. I believe with his energy he will be unbeatable until my boy Maywhether learns and defeats him. ha ha

Paul Williams should be nicknamed “Machine Gun” with the 100+ punches per round he throws. I thought that at that type of pace the punches would lose their steam, but they didn’t. In fact, the punches seemed to get more power as the bout progressed. The man is ready for a marquee fight, but his defense is a little weak. He got hit with way more punches than he should have, and those punches that hit him were sloppy (imagine if they would have connected flush?). I guess when you throw so many punches, you have to give up something. If he fights a fighter with as much power as Margarito, he just may pull it off. I don’t think Antonio would be comfortable with someone constantly putting their glove in his face. Here’s to you, Paul, for making a believer out of me!

Paul Williams has all the tools in becoming the next big time welterweight. He enjoys training, and really want to become a champion. Margarito, Judah, or Gatti have nothing for The Punisher. They will get punished if they are stupid enough to fight the “Punisher. Pretty Boy will probably sit back and evaluate, and when Pretty Boy, and his uncle think they have found a flaw in the “Punisher then maybe they will jump. However what they fail to realized is while fighting top notch opponents, the Punisher will continue to improve. Especially his defense. Pretty Boy is slick, but you can’t run from a long crisp jab all night. Not to mention the punishing body work.

Margarito would really hurt punisher at this stage margarito has fought the better fighters and the punisher got hit alot in his last fight and the fighter ran out of gas. Margarito is the best fighter pound for pound right now by DQ nobody big wants to fight him Floyd and Shamba and De la hoya have backed out margarito has power high valume technoly sound good chin big hart and hungry. I like paul williams but he would lose at this stage fighting someone is almost as tall better all around. the Punisher would get Punished.

I’ve seen Paul train on numerous occasions and I can say he is really a student of the art. He is very focused as he trains for fights and when he trains he makes every session count. I think his jab and endurance will become his trademark. I hear questions concerning his defense, but in my opinion the best defense is a good offense, in this case his consistent and powerful jab. Hats off to Mr. P for the job he’s doing as well. I wish them all the best and the most success for the hardwork and dedication they have.

I have met Paul a few times because he is from my home town AIKEN SOUTH CAROLINA, not augusta ga. I went and sat ring side for the Reno fight and watched him punish Walter Matthysse. It was never realy a contest because Paul is ready for the real deal. I feel like he can take any fighter out there and I would like to see someone balls up and fight him.
