What Should Arturo Gatti Do?

One world opens while another world closes for Thunder Gatti

Arturo Gatti has circumvented many a swan song throughout his amazing career. The cries for his retirement began just after his second decision loss to Ivan Robinson in 1998.

When his corner threw in the towel against Oscar De La Hoya in 2001, the boxing community was ready to say goodbye. Then he came back to give us an all-time great trilogy with Micky Ward before going on to win the WBC Light Welterweight title.

His one-sided loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in June of last year made many think it was pointless to go on. But Gatti came back to challenge Carlos Baldomir for a piece of the welterweight crown, losing in what became the first true knockout of his career.

Now, he once again finds himself at the crossroads. This time, Gatti may realize his health will not benefit from continuing. “I don’t know if I’m ever going to fight again,â€? he told the Herald News after Saturday’s bout.

Gatti’s place in boxing history is secure. He has earned a boatload of money fighting on HBO over the past several years, and he has nothing more to prove.

Now, he must ask himself if there is anything to be gained in the ring that will outweigh the risk of stepping into it.

he wont go out a loser whether he fights again or not. but i think he has one more big fight, then he will prob retire, maybe trying to make history like hopkins recently did… who knows.. i think hell b back 1 more time

To be completely honest, I think Arturo should call it a career. Even though he lost to Carlos Baldomir, he fought like a brave warrior, so he’s got nothing to be ashamed of. He’s given us plently of thrills over the years, and had given it his all in every bout, win or lose. He’s also a fighter who had unlimited courage, and fought with so much heart, no matter who the opponent was, and was so entertaining to watch by using his crowd pleasing “Rocky” style. Arturo “Thunder” Gatti, is sure to be a first ballot pick for the International Boxing Hall Of Fame!

Thunder should call it a day and be proud of how he represented boxing. He might not have been the most talented guy on the scene, but no one could ever question his heart, courage and bravery.

    He will definitely be missed!

Gatti’s without question my most favorite boxer of all time. It was painful watching him in his most recent fight with Baldomir. He looked slow, tired and his punches were just short of hitting Baldomir half of the time. As much as I want to see him retire on a win and sailing into the sunset, I personally think he risks too much stepping in the ring one last time. He could fight a shoemaker, beat him up, give one more too his fans and call it a career but he’s not the type to fight a shoemaker and if he doesn’t fight a shoemaker, he’ll end up even more badly hurt. I would have loved it had he won this past Saturday and had gotten his third world title. He’ll make the Hall of Fame and when he does, I’ll bring my kids along so that they have an understanding of how special he really was.

Arturo has given enough of himself to the sport and should call it a career.

Christian is right, Gatti will definitely be missed.

As i said before the fight, Gatti is a downhill fighter and people for some reason didnt want to realize that. he should have hung the gloves not today , but yesterday. As i also said, today, boxing is more about names than quality, is awful, and is why boxing isnt the gallant sport that used to be. Burned out fighters and the ones not even ranked in the top ten, getting championship fights and in pay per view, shame on the Boxing Organizations and promoters. Anyway, life goes on, but is best for Gatti to stay at home eating lots of Pizza..Gracias

  7. Tome says:

End of the road for gatti.totally outclassed by baldomir who stood in front of him all night and hardly got nicked.best for the warrior to call it a day before he really gets hurt

  9. David Payne says:
