Left Hook Lacy may leave fans in lurch in ‘06
Jeff Lacy said he would be returning to the ring on Oct. 7 on Showtime, and it looked like he would fight super middleweight prospect Allan Green in his first fight back from his dismantling at the studied hands of Joe Calzaghe.
But Lacy then decided against fighting Oct. 7 (on the undercard of the Diego Corrales-Joel Casamayor broadcast) and instead wanted a November meeting with Green, the St. Petersburg Times reports.
Now, promoter Gary Shaw told the Times that Lacy may not fight again this year.
“The Green fight is dead for right now,” Shaw said. “Jeff told me he may not fight for the rest of this year.”
“He’s trying to figure out what he wants to do,” Lacy’s adviser Jim Wilkes said. “Truthfully, I don’t know. I don’t know who the right opponent for the comeback would be. Some of it is just timing.”
You reading between the lines the same way as me?
Shaw sounds a tad irked; that’s a bit understandable, as he’s been working the phones to find the right fit for Lacy’s return engagement…
Wilkes said he hasn’t really talked to Lacy recently.
Everyone seems to be on a different page, or maybe reading from a different book…
I think Lacy can rebound from the beating he took from Calzaghe. I actually agree with him not fighting for the rest of the year. I think he was burned out and overtrained for the Calzaghe fight.
I do believe that even at his best, he still can’t beat Calzaghe. I base this off of the style both boxers have.
I’d like to see Jeff move up to 175 and fight a Glenn Johnson, that my friends would be pure entertainment.
As for Calzaghe, he needs to fight Kessler.
christian, good points and a good post
This one left my head scratching. Most boxers would jump at the opportunity to be on TV. I suppose a 2-month training camp is not good enough for Jeff Lacy, who would like to lose the weight nice and easy in a 3-month period. C’mon man, act like a professional.
Lacy needs to bounce back from this loss and comeback, He needs to be Active
You’re right Steven. Fighters today need to stay active. Two quick examples, Mike Tyson in his prime was fighting four times a year and Julio Cesar Chavez was defending his titles three or four times a year AND having non-title fights.
Garrubal says “act like a professional” and he’s exactly right. This is the career path all these guys have chosen and, at this level, they are paid well enough to stay in shape and not act like prima donnas.
I understand Lacy took a whipping and needs some time off to recover. But too much time off breeds complacency and laziness.
He needs a good tune up fight, right now Greene is prime for a knock out victory for Lacy. Lacy has a good punch and Greene has gotta show me some more. He has to many inconsistencies in his defense, I mean he almost and got dropped by an unranked opponent and though he won, still not enough for Left Hook. Hook should take the fight it would be good for him.
Nice management team- gets a terrible beating and then they try and rush him back with Allan Green? Get the guy a little confidence and get him active.
