Narvaez Keeps His Hands On The Trophy

WBO Flyweight Champion Omar Andres Narvaez went through the motions and improved his record to 22-2-0 by outpointing the number one contender Rexon Flores.
In truth, the 30-year-old champion was never troubled by his Philippine opponent and won comfortably on the scorecards, 119-109, 120-108 and 119-109.
The fight followed a set pattern with Narvaez’s combinations and deadly hand speed allowing him time to pick off the marauding Flores. Indeed, Flores somewhat resembled a distorted bull, stalking the Argentinian champion aimlessly, as Narvaez consistently showed him the red of his eyes before using his left jab to avert the incoming onslaught.
Flores, who came into the bout boasting 12 wins, 6 of which came by way of knockout, was not permitted to showcase his renowned punching power on this night, as the slickness of Narvaez’s movement restricted the challenger to wild air shots. And Flores’s sense of desperation was highlighted, as he was twice docked points for leading dangerously with the head in the 4th and 7th rounds respectively.
In the latter stages Narveaz repeatedly remonstrated with the referee over his opponent’s increasingly roughhouse tactics. However, as Flores visibly tired Narveaz decided to ease off, knowing he had done enough in the earlier rounds.
After this successful defense Narvaez declared that he would now look to a prospective unification bout in December with the IBF titleholder, Armenian Vic Darchinyan.
