Williams Punishes Shamba, Calls Out Margarito After Dark

Undefeated welterweight Paul “The Punisher Williams is ready

Undefeated welterweight Paul “The Punisher Williams pounded former two-time champion Shamba Mitchell to the canvas four times in four rounds before ref Vic Draculich waved off the fight at 2:57.

The bout was at the Reno Events Center in Reno, Nevada, and was broadcast on HBO’s Boxing After Dark as dessert after a meal with Maskaev.

The 25-year-old Paul Williams, hailing from Aiken, Georgia, has 31 wins in 31 fights (23 KOs) and is ranked #1 by the IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO. He is also, as Max Kellerman described him on the B.A.D broadcast, a “unique freak.

Unique because Williams is a 6-foot-1-inch welterweight in a land of short men (Sharmba Mitchell, the mean, the norm, stands at 5-7).

Unique because Paul Williams has an 82 reach.

To call Paul Williams a string bean would be misleading, because he is all red meat.

After his dismantling of Sharmba Saturday night (it took Mayweather 6 rounds to accomplish the same feat), the victorious Williams called out the other champs: “Margarito, Baldomir, Floyd – anyone at ’47 with one of those big belts,” he said. “New blood in the sport.”

YEA… i used to watch this kid fight on broadwy boxing and other small time networks, compared to HBO. good to see him moving up. hes still got sum loose ends hes gotta tighten up, but hell soon be ready for the ‘big boys’ at 147, either way, hell give anyone trouble and i love the way he fights. i think he can beat margarito if he really focused. but i saw him throwing alittle wide and sharmbae caught him with sum looping rights. in a margarito fight, that cant happen.

  2. Anthony says:

Paul is the real deal. He reminds me of a young hit man Hearns without as much power (yet) but a far better chin. Watch out for this guy. If he is not rushed, he will dominate the division is a few years.

  3. MadMan says:

Big Paul did a good number on Mitchell, but I still think he’s got a little more to learn. If I were him I would wait a good two fights before stepping into the ring with Margarito.

  4. gatoloco says:

They were saying the same thing about Kermit Cintron and look what happened to him. I like the kid but i dont think he is anywhere near the caliber of ANTONIO MARGARITO. Williams had a great reach advantage and still got hit clean by the soft punching mitchell.

  5. Vince in Dallas says:

Like Charl-o said I watched this guy on ESPN Wednesday and Friday night Fights, Paul is going to dominate at this weight class a long time, he sparred with ANTONIO MARGARITO for only 2 days a kicked his ass, Margarito’s handlers wanted Paul to take it easy on Antonio cause he was beating him like crazy, he still got a weeks worth of sparring pay(lol). Paul is ready for any one at 147, the only question is are the Hatton’s, Mayweather’s, Margarito’s and Cotto’s ready for him! I THINK NOT BUDDY!!!!!!

  6. the fight speculator says:

This fight proves nothing. Um, before he beat Mitchell he beat a guy who never fought in the U.S before, and when he fought we knew why. Then he beat a guy in Mitchell who A) Got knocked out by a 5′5 140pd Russian, and B)Stepped up to Welter where he got knocked out by a feather fisted first Jr Welter with bad hands. Second, how does Williams become the WBC mandatory when he hasnt beated a top ten Welter yet, and dont say Sharmba, because it is clearly evident he is a blown up Jr. Welter.? This fight was a wasted date by HBO BAD.

  7. Slick says:

I like what i see in Paul Williams, I think the kid has a bright future in boxing. I think he need to tighten up his defense because he been able to get away with little defense fighting light fisted fighters but a serious puncher can hurt him with his lack of defense. Why do everyone keep talking about it took Mayweather 6 rounds to knockout Mitchell and Williams only needed 1? First of all that was PBF first fight a welterweight and second of all Williams is a natural welterweight who said he can fight at up to 168lbs which obviously makes him much bigger than PBF and most of the fighters he has faced this far.

  8. Prof says:

I think Paul’s performance was somewhere in between very good and over-rated. He did what he had to do and looked good, but his weakness is that he lets guys hit him hard! He needs to use his reach and size. I think the power is there if he sets down on his punches and slows his work rate down slightly. He has great speed too, but if he gets wild with Margarito he will get caught with the left hook and it will be over. Still a prospect and beating Sharmba does not make him the top contender. He is on the verge of being one of the best and he is hungry and in shape. I hope he becomes the man at 147-154.

  9. Prof says:

Oh yeah, Aiken is in South Carolina! Right near the border of Georgia.

  10. Aaron,U.K says:

Is this guy comfortable at this weight, he looks huge…

  11. Ringo says:

Paul is definately a top welterweight prospect. I don’t think he’s quite ready for Margarito. A good stepping-stone fight for Paul would be to face Joel Julio. We all saw Julio easily out-boxed by Carlos Quintana, BUT Julio is still a devastating KO puncher like Margarito.

  12. d kwik says:

I belive that you can’t even compare cintron to williams, williams is in superior shape, every round of his is like an olympic round because he is so fast and
throws a crazy amount of punches. I belive that he would beat margarito, everyone says margarito is a power puncher, but when i saw him fight he is nothing special. I belive that paul is going to defeat margarito and will collide heads with mayweather in the future and beat mayweather. THis kid still
is till maturing his power punches.

  13. Nbrown2333 says:

A better chin than the Hit Man? Are you freaking crazy? Williams has never been in the ring with an your prime hall of famer, or even very good fighter. Just because he can take the punches of little big man Sharmba Mitchell doesn’t mean he has a world class chin.

  14. Adam says:

Mitchell is a shorter, smaller, soft punching shot fighter. Williams did look strong against a guy that he should look strong against. He needs a few more years and then he would be ready for the top guys in his class. By then, he would be 154 or 160. He is a big guy who is young. His body is natrually going to take him to heavier weights. Williams needs to move his head and keep his hands up inside. A puncher could have hurt him.
I do think that he has alot of potential. Mitchell on the other hand should retire: Tyzu, Mayweather, and now Williams. Those are some beatings that he took

  15. DIGGY says:

Don’t read too much into this kid taking care of Mitchell in a shorter time than Floyd. Sharmba was already tenderized and ripe for the picking. However, his height alone makes for an interesting matchup for any of the best guys at 147, provided he can continue to make the weight. We’ll see how he progresses as his body matures. For now, he’s simply a good prospect and not necessarily the next anything.

  16. Mr. G says:

Come on….the guy can fight. He has quick hands, great reach, nice jab and he is mobile. That he can take a punch is in the eyes of the beholder. With his hand speed he does not need to show us he can take a punch. The other guy will be out before he knows it.

This guy is for real and he is calling out everybody. Let him have them and see what unfolds.
