Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista Fight At Risk
By Diedre Hamaguchi August 21st, 2006Super bantam Rey Bautista injures collarbone in training
According to the boxing rumor mill, 20-year-old Pilipino sensation Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista (20-0-0, 15 KOs) may have sustained an injury to his collarbone. He is currently in camp at the Wild Card Boxing Gym in Los Angeles where he works with Edito “Ala” Villamor and Freddie Roach.
Bautista is scheduled to face Giovanni Andrade (51-9-0, 42 KOs), a Brazilian who is sixteen years his senior, on the undercard of the Barrera-Juarez rematch on Sept. 16 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Andrade replaces the Chilean Moises Gutierrez who was unable to secure a US visa. Andrade is no stranger to visa issues himself. He was to face Derrick “Smoke” Gainer for the IBA lightweight title on Aug 12, but was not able to gain entry to the US.
Bautista was only seven when the Brazilian began his career. Notable contests on Andrade’s roster include a loss to Johnny Tapia for the WBO super flyweight belt in 1996, and a KO-2 loss in May to Takalani Ndlovu for the IBO super bantamweight strap.
Rey, who is still barely out of his teens, turned pro at age sixteen. With eight pro fights, Bautista traveled to Indonesia, Korea, and Japan before returning home to capture the vacant IBO Asia-Pacific bantamweight belt in 2004. He defended his belt twice.
In his first foray at super bantam, Bautista, who is signed by Golden Boy Promotions, scored a third round knockout against Nicaraguan Roberto Bonilla at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on the undercard of controversial Barrera-Juarez I. This decisive performance may have given Team Bautista the impetus to vacate his belt to move up in weight.
Hopefully, Sept. 16 marks Rey’s return to the ring since being forced to scratch versus Felix Montiel on the Pacquiao-Larrios undercard in July, when he was hospitalized due to a viral infection. Regardless, time is certainly on this developing youngster’s side. He already has a huge fan base in the Philippines, and with GBP he is likely to receive plenty of support and exposure stateside. Furthermore, under Freddie Roach, Rey is receiving top-rate guidance at a pivotal age as a fighter.
Look for this baby-faced banger to make his own mark in a division made popular by fellow Filipino, Manny Pacquiao, who has mentioned he may step down from the fight game shortly.

If Bom-bom really had an injury, please avoid him to fight, no need to rush as he is too young and still a lot of opportunities to come!
Thank you.

I agree with Mr. Fajardo’s comment, there’s no need to rush. We need filipinos like him to put our country to the world on top.

if rey boom boom bautista got hurt in his collarbone as reported, give him more time to recover before fighting. He will be better than Manny pacquiao before he reach the age of 23. He will be a world champion.

rey boom boom bautista reminds me of a former world champion tacy macalos the way he box offensively and by delivering a body punch. His local trainer edito villamor is one of the best pilipino boxer and i have seen him fights locally. What rey needs is a experience trainer like freddie roach in order to be a world champion. Rey a a future Hagler of the Philippines. To his manager, dont put time pressure to the kid and i believe that rey is better than manny pacquiao. Give him proper fatherly advise. Boholonos are used to work hard, honest, have always faith in our god. Proper sharing of purse is better than cheating. Dont compare yourself to our politician I quote, mga taong mapagsamantala at
magnanakaw. Huwag igaya sa kantang —ang Pilipino daw ay may lahing magnanakaw. and kantang yan ay para lang sa mga politiko at hindi sa mga pilipino.

there are so many pilipino boxers , and i beleived that boom boom bautista will be on e
of the greatest among the greatest, tama ang comment nila, kailangan patience, bakit kailangang madaliin para sila ang kumita ng big money then just incase na alam na nilang wala na silang mapapala, iiwan ka na lang, tulad ng politician sa atin dont trust anyone of them, they are linta, they served themselves not to the filipino people.
Saka tama si Manny kung totoong latter own mag-step down na siya its time to enjoy what he had, sana huwag niyang tangkaing pumasok sa politika otherwise baka matutu rin siyang magnakaw sa sambayanang pilipino.
