Taylor Should Give Wright a Rematch
By Aaron Tallent August 25th, 2006DiBella dickers, plays hard to get, re: Taylor-Wright II
The Boston Globe is reporting that Golden Boy Promotions, which represents Winky Wright, has recently approached Jermain Taylor promoter Lou DiBella with a $6 million offer for a rematch between the two.
Taylor’s camp then told Golden Boy that since Taylor was the champion, they would be the ones to make the offer. The Globe reports that Wright has been offered $5 million to fight Taylor next April if he agrees to remain idle until then.
Taylor is tentatively scheduled to fight Kassim Ouma in Little Rock in late November or early December of this year, although that deal has not been finalized.
Taylor and Wright’s first bout in June was the subject of controversy. While all boxing fans have an opinion on the fight, the judges were correct in declaring it a draw.
All great fighters take steps to erase the question marks on their record. If Taylor has any desire of one day joining that upper echelon, he must fight Wright again. Both fighters are under contract with HBO and the money will be there. So he certainly has no excuses for not doing so.

yes!!
wright should take a light fight though in between now and april. a 10 month lay-off, then going in to a fight, against jermain taylor no less is bull. they want wright to remain idle so jermain has a better chance of beating him. my birthday is in april so this would the month even better, if it goes down. i think it will.
jermain can take a ‘warm up fight’, but winky cant??!!??!! lou dibella sucks.

i wonder why he wants him to remain idle, i have never heard of that before. if anyone has any reason why let me know. I am at a lost fo reason why

I’ll believe it when it happens. I think Jermain will get past Ouma comfortably. I rather like Jermain Taylor….all fight , low attitude….that is what boxing needs. Not the “its my time to shine” or “i am the best” or “god has blessed me” kind who then do nothing in the ring.

Winky Wright clearly won the first bout! That said, Jermain Taylor will knock him out if they fight again, and Winky knows it. Thats why he doesn’t want a rematch! Wright is on the decline and Jermain is only getting faster(he constantly beat Winky to the punch, when he actually threw) and stronger( you could see Ronald flinching as he took those shots on his arms). Taylor is not a better fighter than Winky, but he is a volume puncher and Wright will not be successful in deflecting and countering as he was last time. Emanuel Steward is too good at what he does to allow it! Wright should use the leverage he gained from the first match to get a fight with someone like a Mayweather or Spinks and avoid Jermain Taylor until he’s ready to retire, which is effectively what Jermain will do to him!

Winky certainly did not win the first fight. It could have gone either way. If you want to take away a guys title…you have to really bring it on. Not for the first time did Winky try to coast in the last few rounds thinking he had the fight. Same thing he did in the Vargas fight. He complains about the Vargas decision, but if looked at the lst few rounds…cleary, he did precious little.
Taylor kept fighting to the end…thats what real champs do. Winky knows he could not knock Taylor out, and his own defence was suitable broken as shown by the swellings on his face. All this grandstanding is fine, I can’t believe Winky is earger to fight Taylor again.

I think that the fight was a draw because even though Wright may have won his rounds a little more convincingly they were still 10-9 rounds. If rounds could be broken down into smaller increments then possibly Wright won, but none of the rounds that each fighter won (and I do think they were split 6-6) were more or less than 10-9 rounds. That said I liked Taylor’s attitude when he said right after the fight that he would like the rematch. I think that Wright did not use the best judgement in taking the last two rounds off because he thought he won the fight. In fact I think that reasoning is just plan stupid especially in boxing the way matches are scored. I think the Taylor camp is just posturing about demanding that Wright cannot fight. Sure they will use it if they can get that advantage. I know that De La Hoya will not allow it and I’m sure the fight will come off after negoitations. It is too good a fight not too. I’m sure it will be on PPV.

i think De La Hoya will make this fight. hes a fighter, now promoter so he know what to do and how to get the fight into the ring. im happy de la hoya started his promotion company. anyway, de la hoya will not allow winky to NOT fight in bewteen the taylor fight, that ridiculous!!!!! like i said a 10 month lay-off going into a taylor fight is retarted. this is def PPV, i think wright could win if he takes the fight to taylor like he did in the first fight. but then look at taylor, manny is really making improvments w/ him. the second fight will be even more electric!!!!

I feel that Jermain Taylor should give Winky Wright a rematch most definitely. There first bout was one for the ages and I can’t help but say that Winky should’ve went for the knockout in the last round instead of playing it safe.
Good fighters close the show strong, just as Bernard Hopkins did against Felix Trinindad. In closing, I look forward to seeing this rematch unfold.

yea, wink had the fight and should hav swung for the fences and been in and out against taylor in the 12th. wink did alot of foot work and movement that really confused taylor in the 12. he didnt even really swing and was confusing taylor, wink should hav won that fight and could hav eaisly won the 12 rnd.

I hope the fight gets made. Jermain Taylor will continue to improve and Winky will keep getting older, so I like Taylor in the rematch.
August 28th, 2006 at 9:05 am
Jermain is the tommorrow…Winky is the past. I too like Taylor in a rematch. He wins in size , speed, power and guts; only Winky’s thick arms, glued to his head will tip the fight in his balance.
Jermain by decision; if at all Winky ever agrees to fight him again.

If Taylor thinks he will get by Kassim Ouma he is in for a long ride. I don’t think that the Taylor-Wright fight will happen because Ouma is going to eat his lunch. This guy is so busy that Taylor is not going to know what to do. Did any of you see his last fight against the Powell guy. All the talk to just see it vanish.
I say it will be Kassim vs Wright for a great fight. Taylor no chance!
August 28th, 2006 at 7:14 pm
Kassim Ouma????? Ouma is an all action fighter who throws a lot of punches, but he can barely crack an egg. Taylor is a bigger, stronger fighter who has just had three straight against P4P fighters. To say Taylor has “no chance” is asinine. Remember Ouma just lost to ROMAN KARMAZIN three fights ago. Taylor beats Ouma, then Wright in a rematch.
Talk to you after the fight Mr. G.

Maaaan!! Winky won that fight!! If you know anything about boxing you would know. Jermaine is not even half as skillful as Winky, Jermaine is strong but if he couldn’t stop Wink then what makes you think he is going to get the K.O this time around. If they do fight again Winky is going to whoop that ass. And that’s that.
August 29th, 2006 at 3:21 pm
G-pal,
if Taylor has a punch what happened with Winky and Hopkins fights? He could not do anything. In fact as soon as he gets in the ring and Ouma starts going after him he will have to start back peddeling and his punching power is gone.
The only way Taylor beats Ouma is he fights him in his home town Arkansas.
