Ronyell Whitaker Learned Lessons from Uncle

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

Sweet Pea Whitaker’s nephew goes gridiron

Ronyell Whitaker, nephew of Pernell “Sweet Pea Whitaker, is doing well with another NFL team after contemplating following in his uncle’s footsteps.

The former Virginia Tech defensive back was drafted by Tampa Bay in 2003, spent most of the next two seasons on the practice squad, was waived after training camp in 2005 and spent last season at home in Norfolk, VA.

“When I was sitting at home last year, I was considering going back to the gym and becoming a pro boxer,” Whitaker told the Associated Press.

Whitaker instead chose to sign with the Minnesota Vikings. He then went to Europe cultivate his skills playing for the Rhein Fire. He did exceptionally well, making the All-NFL Europe team. Now back in the United States, the Vikings’ coaching staff is very excited about his future.

“He has kind of an extra heartbeat,” said Vikings head coach Brad Childress said. “He always plays with a high tempo, and it doesn’t surprise me that he’s playing that way.”

Ronyell trained in his uncle’s gym as a youth, and credits boxing for part of his success.

“It helped me with football as far as quickness, a lot of shoulder movement, head movement,” Whitaker said. “So it helped me a lot. And nobody’s better conditioned than boxers. Nobody.”

His uncle, a boxing virtuoso, dominated the welterweight division in the mid-1990s. However, drug problems hampered his career and kept Sweet Pea from maximizing his accomplishments.

“Not only did I sit back and learn a lot of stuff from him just by watching him in the ring, but I also learned a lot of things not to do,” Whitaker said. “Not to let it carry on when I turned professional in whatever sport I did, whether it was boxing or football.

Hitman Hatton hands over Rolex and invincibility

Word from overseas is that Ricky Hatton has been mugged while vacationing in China. He was ambushed while on holiday in Shanghai by a gang of thugs who wanted, reports The Mirror, and successfully snatched, his £4,000 Rolex.

According to Ricky’s agent Paul Speak, Hitman Hatton had been out drinking with friends when he and said friends were separated. Hatton, a bit in his cups, was attacked on his way back to his hotel.

“There was a scuffle,â€? Speak said. “He was pretty scared but did the sensible thing by not trying to fight his way out. Whenever he goes abroad he usually wears a cheap plastic watch but on this occasion he forgot it.â€?

Hatton had flown to the Far East to witness his beloved Manchester City footballers pre-season tour.

“Ricky is a bit embarrassed because he knows that he should have stayed with his mates and not been walking the streets alone.”

If memory serves, not long ago Ricky was mugged after a night of drinking in safer-than-ever New York City…

Atlas Not Training Henry Maske

Setting the record straight on Atlas/Maske

Teddy Atlas will not be training Henry Maske for his return to the ring.

Maske stated at a press conference earlier today that Atlas might train him for his rematch against Virgil Hill, scheduled for March 31, 2007 in Munich, Germany. Maske’s statement is not correct.

After Maske’s representatives asked Atlas to train the German fighter and were turned down, Maske himself flew to New York in an attempt to convince Atlas to train him. Maske told Atlas that he was returning to the ring for the sole purpose of redeeming the only loss in his career, to Virgil Hill in 1996.

Atlas was prepared to take on the job of training Maske when he believed that the driving force behind Maske’s decision was his desire for redemption. However, Atlas has become disappointed in Maske’s behavior as it has become clear that Maske’s commitment and his priorities are not what he initially represented.

Atlas has therefore decided that he no longer wishes to be a part of Maske’s comeback.

Express Boxing Workout Gaining Popularity

Boxing gyms they are a-changin’

The Associated Press on Wednesday highlighted a circuit gym chain that is gaining membership throughout the world. The Blitz, which describes itself as “a cross-training exercise program that combines strength training, boxing and martial arts into a 20 minute circuit called ‘The Blitz Ring’, has more than 75 locations in the U.S., Canada, and Ireland.

The workout breakdown is quick, but simple. A bell rings and the exerciser begins punching a heavy bag. The bell rings again in 30 seconds and the workout shifts to arm curls at another station. By doing this for 20 minutes, the exerciser has completed a series of cardiovascular and strength trainings in a short period of time.

The AP reports that 85 percent of Americans do not belong to a gym, one of the main reasons being lack of time. As a result, circuit gyms like The Blitz and Curves for Women are becoming more prevalent. Of the country’s estimated 30,000 health clubs, almost a third of them are circuit gyms.

Lester Ellis Receives Good Behavior Bond

Leave your knives and samurai swords at home

Former super featherweight champion Lester Ellis will not have serve jail time for forcefully taking over a Melbourne video store last May. He will have to continue psychiatric care, attend Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings, and make a donation to a children’s charity, The Australian reported on Wednesday.

The sentence is part of a 12-month good behavior bond for Ellis’ guilty plea to three counts of carrying a prohibited weapon, one count of unlawful assault and one count of assaulting police. On May 25, under fears that he was being followed, Ellis entered a video store with two knives and a samurai sword and ordered the attendant to leave. Police later arrived and subdued him with capsicum spray.

Magistrate Lisa Hannan released Ellis on the bond, acknowledging his remorse and efforts to overcome alcoholism. Ellis’ attorney said the former champion was working to improve his life.

Ellis (42-8) won the IBF Super Featherweight title from Hwan Kil Yuh by split decision in February of 1985, and successfully defended it once before losing it to Barry Michael in July of that year. He went on to win the Australian Lightweight and Light Welterweight titles, the British Empire Light Welterweight title, and a few offshoot belts before retiring in 2002.

Contender Recap: SRL Kisses Forbes, Curiel and New Yawk vs. Boston

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2006

Nevadan Stevie Forbes makes his move on The Contender

Four fighters haven’t gotten busy on The Contender 2 and all of them gloved up in the latest installment on ESPN Tuesday evening so here’s what went down for all you TSS Blog Squadders who had better things to do…

Freddy Curiel of New Jersey, who’s been away from the ring for four-plus years, is on the phone with his lady, a most sensible gal. She tells him to fight the softer Massachusetts fighter, Chicken Pox Fraza, over the former world champ, Nevadan Stevie Forbes. He seems to absorb the wisdom but who will he choose as his dance partner?

Fraza reads “Junky” by Bill Burroughs and we are led to believe that he treasures his leisure time, as Burroughs did, over everything else….

SRL gives his “Put up or shut up speech to the remaining crew, telling them to show what they got in the ring, not with their mouths…

The Blue crew chooses the matchup because Michael Stewart downed Ebo Elder last week so Nick Acevedo from New York does the smart thing and picks Fraza.

The Curiels are seen chowing down and a son asks Freddy who he’s facing. “A world champion, Curiel answers. “You can beat him, the boy says, proudly, naively.

Fraza’s pop visits him in the dressing room, as we move quickly into the action portion of the show because of the doubleheader format….

Acevedo says he’s doing this to keep a roof over his family’s head and to put chow on the table.

He looks to be doing a good job of it in the first, as he comes out strong and Fraza flat. “Ray Charles gave you that round, Tommy Gallagher says to Acevedo.

In the second, Fraza winces when Acevedo goes to the body. But Ace is breathing hard after the round and can’t even muster an answer when Gallagher asks him how he’s feeling.

In the third, Fraza has a better round and raises his hand to the ceiling after to celebrate. His left eye is cut, not horribly…

In the fourth, it’s trench warfare, toe-to-toe action. Good stuff, they both want it.

SRL tells guest star Burt Reynolds that the last round will decide it. Burt looks like he comprehends it, but who knows if the plastic surgery and Botox has clouded his brain…

In the fifth, Ace throws a wicked one-two and then goes downstairs, on the beltline. Fraza doesn’t respond in kind.

Not too much drama as the announcer gives the verdict: unanimously, the judges have sent the Red Sox fan back to Beantown. If he were so inclined, if any Yankee fan tried to rub in the loss, Fraza could remind them that the Yanks choked in historically grandiose fashion in 2004.

“I dropped the ball, Fraza says, and really, he really seems better suited to sofa time than a ring career.

On to the second bout of the evening.

Curiel’s son cries and his pop tells him everything’s gonna be alright.

Forbes’ lady, the hottest chica of any of the Contenders, shows up.

Gallagher loves Forbes, tells him that they are similar in warm-up habits….

In the first, Curiel from New Jersey shows Forbes who’s boss as he shoves the man off and whales away. Then Forbes goes to work, but it looks like Curiel took the round. Is the favorite going to be upset?

In the second round, Forbes starts landing. Freddy’s woman, showing typical sense, tells him to “Get out of there!

Gallagher smartly warns Forbes that he hit Curiel with major power shots and “he went nowhere.

In the third, Forbes shows his veteran savvy. He crouches and then comes up with a mean hit from underneath, a shot he used to good effect throughout the bout. Forbes also goes to the body and hits on the beltline, a legal blow.

Forbes continues his accurate assault in the fourth, and gets SRL to wet himself when he does a herky jerky dance and then tosses a mean right uppercut that snaps Curiel’s head back. SRL and Mora giggle like schoolgirls meeting….I don’t know, who the hell is heartthrob of the day to the preteen set? I’m not going with a John Mark Karr/JonBenet joke, I’m telling you that…SRL and Mora are appreciative…So is Curiel, who smiles…

Jeremy Williams, a solid motivator, tries his best to perk up the outclassed Curiel. “Your kids need you to work!

In the fifth, Forbes is in another zone completely. He throws mostly power punches, slips and ducks when he needs to…

No drama here: the judges call it unanimously for Forbes, who held the IBF super feather title in 2000 (but it must be said that he beat limited John Brown for the vacated belt and was hooked up with a rematch for his defense, and that he didn’t make weight for his second defense, against David Santos in 2002). “I’m the guy to beat, Forbes says, and who’s to dispute that?

The Curiels are teary in the dressing room. His daughter is bawling but daddy gives here an Oprah-worthy life lesson, saying true champs bounce back. The wife boots the kids and then turns around and starts bawling as well. Curiel reassures her that big things are in store for the family.

Solid ep overall, heavy on the action, and both fights delivered. Oh, almost forgot, SRL kissed Forbes and Curiel after their fight in appreciation for a strong effort, so that was a bonus…

Joe Mesi Licensed In Michigan

Buffalo’s Baby Joe Mesi shuffles off to Grand Rapids

The re-licensing flurry continues for Joe “Frequent Flyer Miles” Mesi, as it looks like the Buffalo-area heavyweight will glove up in Michigan on a Sept.15 card.

Mesi (32-0, 26 knockouts) will take on opponent TBA in a four-round bout at the Little River Casino, near Grand Rapids, the Niagara Gazette says.

It’s Mesi’s fourth fight this year since that his two-year suspension from boxing was lifted; he scored a win over Ron Bellamy in Puerto Rico, Stephane Tessier in Montreal and Dennis “Mad Dogâ€? Matthews in Arkansas.

Coincidence Of The Year: Bika’s Elbow Injury

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2006

Lie detector tests mandated for Calzaghe vs. Bika

Forgive me for being a skeptic. If you think I’m barking up the wrong tree here, then let me know…

But remember back three weeks back, when Sakio Bika withdrew from the Showtime super middleweight tournament? The reason cited was an injury to his elbow. Well, that elbow healed well enough for him to pick up a pen to fight Joe Calzaghe, didn’t it?

The Australian-based Bika, who fought to a technical draw with WBC super middleweight world champion Markus Beyer in Germany last May, will fight IBF and WBO titleholder Calzaghe on October 14 in Manchester.

Bika (20-1-2, 13 KOs) said he hurt the ‘bow in sparring a week before he was to fight Colombian Jose Luis Herrera.

He underwent surgery about two weeks ago and said his elbow was “95 percent good now.”

Fast healer, that Bika…

I’m not certain I like Bika’s “fightin’ words” going in to the biggest fight of his career, however…

“It is a very big challenge for me, its going to be very hard to beat him in England, but I’m going there to try to win,” he said.

Sounds somewhat like Prince Badi before he met Roy Jones, and we all know how that went…

Listen, maybe I’m seeing something that isn’t there, and there was a marvelous confluence of coincidence that added up to a big, fat break for Bika, but c’mon, this is boxing, where you know people are lying, most of the time, by applying one simple test: Are their lips moving?

Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista Fight At Risk

Super bantam Rey Bautista injures collarbone in training

According to the boxing rumor mill, 20-year-old Pilipino sensation Rey “Boom Boom Bautista (20-0-0, 15 KOs) may have sustained an injury to his collarbone. He is currently in camp at the Wild Card Boxing Gym in Los Angeles where he works with Edito “Ala Villamor and Freddie Roach.

Bautista is scheduled to face Giovanni Andrade (51-9-0, 42 KOs), a Brazilian who is sixteen years his senior, on the undercard of the Barrera-Juarez rematch on Sept. 16 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Andrade replaces the Chilean Moises Gutierrez who was unable to secure a US visa. Andrade is no stranger to visa issues himself. He was to face Derrick “Smoke Gainer for the IBA lightweight title on Aug 12, but was not able to gain entry to the US.

Bautista was only seven when the Brazilian began his career. Notable contests on Andrade’s roster include a loss to Johnny Tapia for the WBO super flyweight belt in 1996, and a KO-2 loss in May to Takalani Ndlovu for the IBO super bantamweight strap.

Rey, who is still barely out of his teens, turned pro at age sixteen. With eight pro fights, Bautista traveled to Indonesia, Korea, and Japan before returning home to capture the vacant IBO Asia-Pacific bantamweight belt in 2004. He defended his belt twice.

In his first foray at super bantam, Bautista, who is signed by Golden Boy Promotions, scored a third round knockout against Nicaraguan Roberto Bonilla at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on the undercard of controversial Barrera-Juarez I. This decisive performance may have given Team Bautista the impetus to vacate his belt to move up in weight.

Hopefully, Sept. 16 marks Rey’s return to the ring since being forced to scratch versus Felix Montiel on the Pacquiao-Larrios undercard in July, when he was hospitalized due to a viral infection. Regardless, time is certainly on this developing youngster’s side. He already has a huge fan base in the Philippines, and with GBP he is likely to receive plenty of support and exposure stateside. Furthermore, under Freddie Roach, Rey is receiving top-rate guidance at a pivotal age as a fighter.

Look for this baby-faced banger to make his own mark in a division made popular by fellow Filipino, Manny Pacquiao, who has mentioned he may step down from the fight game shortly.

Joe Calzaghe Opponent Named

Welsh boxing hero to face Cameroon’s Sakio Bika

Joe Calzaghe, his left hand healed, now back in the gym, will return to the ring against Cameroon’s Sakio Bika at Manchester’s MEN Arena on October 14.

Promoter Frank Warren has promised the unbeaten Calzaghe a February “mega-fight if he can do to Bika what he did to Jeff Lacy in March.

“I have had a lot of frustration in my career but I plan on making up for it in October and I have the great incentive of what may be a unification fight in February,” Calzaghe told The Times of London. “I have been training hard for the last five weeks and have had no problems. I know nothing about Bika but from his record he looks like a tough fighter.”

The Australia-based Bika, 27, has only one loss in 23 professional fights. He put up an exceptional showing against the WBC super-middleweight champion Markus Beyer in May before the fight was declared a technical draw after four when the champ suffered a bad cut.

“If Joe comes through we have got a big TV date in February for what will be a mega-fight,” Warren said. “Joe has had a lot of injuries but when he is on top of his game I don’t think anybody can live with him.”

Also on the card will be the WBO cruiserweight title clash between Johnny Nelson and Enzo Maccarinelli.
