Joe Calzaghe wants Clinton Woods now
Undefeated Welsh super middleweight boxing sensation Joe Calzaghe claims IBF light heavyweight titleholder Clinton Woods, who defeated Glen Johnson over the weekend to retain his crown, is scared to fight him.
Woods, from Sheffield, England, said that he’s willing put it all on the line against Calzaghe, just so long as there’s a 50-50 purse split – which Joe thinks is bunk.
“Clinton Woods knows he can’t beat me,” Calzaghe said, according to the Mirror. “If he thinks he can beat me, then he should fight me and prove it. If he doesn’t fight me it will be because he knows he would get beat.â€?
Calzaghe’s not alone in believing he’ll beat Clinton Woods if and when they meet, but the bout, should it get made, ought to drive the fight fans in Great Britain batty.
“He’ll get a big payday and I’ll get a big payday, so let’s get it on,â€? repeated Calzaghe. “He’s not getting any younger and who else is he going to fight?
“It’s a natural fight to make. He’s the best at light heavyweight. I’m the best at super middleweight.”
Asked to critique Woods’ performance, which Calzaghe was watching ringside Saturday night, Joe said that “It was like watching a fight in slow motion. I’m Speedy Gonzalez compared to those guys. I congratulate Clinton on winning, and he’s strong and brave, but he would never beat me.”
Joe should forget about fighting Woods…. This fight does nothing to increase his respectability. Think- Winky, Jermain Taylor, Kessler.
If joe wants to be famous in Brittain, then he shold fight woods. I fhe knows what it would be like to famous in the U.S where it really matters, He should go after Wright, Hopkins, or taylor.
it doesn’t matter so much in America, if you’re a super middle or light heavy. What do you want him to do, go up to light heavy and face the quality Chad dawson, who is simply not ready & doesn’t have a title. Or go down to middleweight! LOL, I doubt that happens, as JC struggled to make 168 since the turn of this century.
What do Kessler, Beyer, Mundine, Bute, Adamek, Briggs, Erdei
Face the facts. There is a market to be exploited in Germany, where ‘average size guys’ get paid more than anywhere else in the world (& these Euros don’t get their contracts violated by ppl like King, who throws their careers in inactivity), and the UK. Look at the fights that there’s been in the Uk this year, Woods-Delisle II (IBF light heavy), Calzaghe-Lacy, Woods-Johnson III, and there’s no paucity of upcoming ones: Witter-Corley (WBC 140), Harrison v JM Marquez (WBO 126), Calzaghe vs Bika (WBO & IBF 168, which will pave the way to…) then possibly Calzaghe-Woods next year.
if it only counts in America, why on earth are quality foreign fighters coming over here?
3.3m saw Woods edge Johnson on terrestrial TV. 2mil watched Calzaghe whup on Lacy at 3 in the morning.
Clinton Woods has nothing to offer Calzaghe, other than his belt, which at this point is not as highly regarded as Calzaghe’s, so he should take the smaller purse (60-40 is about right). Taylor needs a noght off and Ouma is perfect for that. This should set the stage for a Sugar/Marvelous-type matchup between Joe Calzaghe and Jermain Taylor. The only problem would be with Joe’s weight, since he’d be coming back down to super-middle to make the match with middleweight Jermain. Winky doesn’t figure into the equation, because although he clearly beat Taylor, he showed that Jermain’s speed and power were a load that he doesn’t want to bear again, and Calzaghe’s bigger and more skilled than Taylor. Winky needs to clean out the smaller classes (Cory Spinks, Floyd Mayweather, ANYONE?) and retire to promoting. He’s simply too small for these guys.
Calzaghe is a machine and will destroy any 1 super middle or light heavy
