Ricky Hatton to fight Juan Urango in Atlanta in January

Former junior-/welterweight champ Ricky Hatton has confirmed that his next fight will be in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 13, 2007 – a long wait for Hatton’s legion of loyal fans – against Juan Urango for his old IBF junior welter belt.

“I’ll be fighting Juan Urango on January 13,â€? Hatton told Sky Sports, “which is a little bit of a disappointment because I was hoping to fight in October or November, but that’s the only date HBO had available.â€?

If and when Ricky gets by Urango, he’ll meet the rugged, weight challenged, former champion from Mexico, Jose Luis Castillo, a fight which is “virtually a done deal.”

Just last week newly crowned WBC champion Junior Witter, fresh off of his points win over DeMarcus “Chop Chop Corley, called out Hatton, but has been told to hurry up and wait.

“I’m contracted to HBO for my next two fights,â€? said Hatton in response to Junior’s challenge, “and they’re practically done deals now. I don’t see why a little bit further down the line that if Junior makes a couple of defenses I can fight him.

“On the undercard will be Castillo. Should I get past Urango they’re lining up Castillo for me. If Junior can hold onto his belt and make a few defenses the fight against me will be even bigger.â€?

Hatton has been in the U.S. checking out gym facilities in Atlanta, in addition to getting a firsthand look at the Atlanta Dome and the Phillips Arena, the city’s two main stadiums.

Ricky Hatton is guided by his HBO contract. At the least he is honest about it.

  2. Ringo Says:

This should be a great fight…both are brawlers and pack a huge punch. I give Hatton the edge b/c of experience.

  3. Jesse Weaver Says:

    Guys Guys Guys,

Walking along singing our song walking in a Hatton wonderland……

Hatton by KO in round 7

  4. Loren Robinson Says:

Hatton took the easy way out, by giving up his welterweight title and by moving back down to junior welterweight. When he fights Jose Luis Castillo
it will be a good fight. But who is he going to fight after that fight. Most of the best fighters in the 140 to 147 pound range are at welterweight now. Floyd Mayweather, Carlos Baldomir, Antonio Margarito, Paul Williams,
Miguel Cotto(planning to move up to welter), and Sugar Shane Mosley are all welterweights. So if he wanta mega fights, he is going to have to move back up to welterweight.

  5. AL TAYLOR Says:

BOXING ISN’T JUST ABOUT WINNING CHAMPIONSHIP BELTS ANYMORE, IT’S ABOUT MATCHING TWO FIGHTERS WHO CAN GIVE THE BEST VALUE FOR MONEY. HOPEFULLY THEY’VE GOT IT RIGHT WITH URANGO AND HATTON. I’LL TAKE HATTON TO WIN NOW HE’S BACK TO JUNIOR WELTER.

  6. TOMMY Says:

HATTON WINS THIS FIGHT EASY AS HE IS THE BEST JR WELTERWEIGHT IN THE WORLD AND BACK AT THE WEIGHT HE SHOULD BE FIGHTING AT- HE ALSO SAID HE WILL FINISH HIS CAREER AT 140 AND THE GUYS AT 147 ARE TO BIG FOR HIM AND THE ONLY MAN HE WOULD FIGHT AT 147 IS MAYWEATHER AS NAYWEATHER IS NO WERE NEAR A NATURAL WELTER HIMSELF SO ITS A FAIR FIGHT- FOR THE RECORD HATTON BEAT COLLAZO REGARDLESS OF HOW UNIMPRESSIVE HE LOOKED AT 147 AND IT WASNT THE USUAL PERFORMANCE THAT WE ARE USE TO SEEING FROM THE HITMAN- 140 IS WERE HE BELONGS AND WERE HE WILL CONTINUE TO DOMINATE

  7. charl-o Says:

i think castillo beats hatton maybe by ko. i just think hes too much of a dog for hatton, plus his skill. hell beat up hatton on the inside and kill his body.u cant hurt castillo that easy. coto is already at welter weight and has a title bout lined up against carlos quintana. i cant wait to see that fight!!!

  8. scott steward Says:

Theres only 1 ricky hatton. and yes he belongs at 140 screw his critics hes the best in his division but at welter maybe top 3 the others being cotto and maywether-hatton would beat these 2 an 140 but maby not at 147.

  9. leon h Says:

after this fight in my opion the only fight worth watching in this devision is hatton v witter and after that he needs to move up because thats were all the big fights r.

  10. Vincent Says:

No sir. Hatton did not take the easy way out. If he kept fighting 5′9 inch fighters at welterweight he’d be at a huge disadvantage. He’d be a little Ike Quartey. One struggle against Collazo and people are calling Ricky a bum…what the hell is wrong with people. Like Klitschko said “in chess no one is expert but everyone plays ;in boxing everyone is expert but noone fights”

I dont think we should accuse him of taking the easy way out. I think there are attractive fights for him at junior welterweight and Ricky will do just fine.

  11. scott mcmillan Says:

the problem with hatton wanting to fight big names like cotto and mayweather is that he could well have missed his chance, because its rare that a fighter returns to a lighter weight division if theyre succeeding at a heavier weight

  12. marc Says:

hatton should win this wight because he is the best but if he gets beat his record will be poo with a lost on it

  13. Rue Says:

I think jr welter is rickys weight class…he is only 5′6″ wich is manny paquiaos height and he fights at jr lightweight….i was surprised and affraid for ricky hatton when he moved up in weight to fight guys that are just way too big for him…i think he did the right thing by going back to his old weight class and hopefully against urango, we get something like a castillo corrales
