Winky Wright To Fight Ike Quartey

Winky Wright finally finds someone to fight

Winky Wright, the southpaw who is too good for his own – or apparently anyone else’s – good, has finally found someone able and willing to step in the ring with him to do battle.

After being stiff-armed by Jermain Taylor’s promoter Lou DiBella, who is opting for an easy payday (underweight Kassim Ouma) for his marquee fighter after his last three disputed defenses, and told by Joe Calzaghe that it’s not yet time for the two of them to meet (take two aspirin and call us in ’07), Wright has signed to meet Ike “Bazooka Quartey at the St. Pete Times Forum on December 2

Quartey “lost his last bout to Vernon Forrest at the MSG Theater on August 5 in another example of wildly imprecise judging, but now has an opportunity to redeem himself, as though redemption were even necessary, against the Winkster.

Wright hasn’t fought in Florida in four years, so the bout against Quartey will be a homecoming of sorts. “Finally,â€? Winky told the St. Pete Times, “I get to come home.”

Fight fans in Florida not completely snookered by slugging for slugging’s sake should greet the great Winky Wright with open arms…

Thank you, Winky. Wink is a class act and we all deserve to see him at home. I’ll go anywhere to watch him fight but it sure will be nice to just go down the street. And bringing Jeff back home is just what he needs. Tampa, if you have never seen these guys you don’t want to miss it – there will not be another chance for a long time. Welcome home boys – we missed you.

  2. DaveB says:

Wright should win this one pretty easy if he stays busy punching, not taking rounds off at the end, but he should definitely fight Taylor again before time runs out.

  3. Paulie says:

Screw this fight. Winky should try and push Jermain into a rematch.

I think this is a terrible fight for ike or anyone else for that matter, look for winky to get a long overdue ko.Remember ike was knocked down by the feather fisted verno phillips and wright knows that he’s got to look great.

  5. Nawfside says:

I think Winky is gonna pick off Ike like he did Trinadad. But I think Ike is a bit better fundamentally and won’t get completely shut-out. I would like to see a Calzaghe and Winky match-up and then the winner get Taylor.

i like any fight with wink. i think he will just out box and out punch quartey to a tko. ike def beat verno in august, the scoring was rididolous. winkys gonna put on a clinic and get bizzy from the get go. i was thinking about how the taylor rematch fell thru…. dibella moved it a month because of all the ppv bouts around that time, but theres only 2 good ones in november, so far, mayweather and pac-morales, i thought dec was fine. its not like winky at all to pull out of a fight, espescially when taylor went to skool in a sense last june. fuck dibella, he didnt want taylor to fight winky after the 2 hopkins fights!!!hes def looking for an easy win and $$ day for taylor, F’ing over winky…… thats messed up.
anyway, after he beats ike i say taylor n wink get it on

Winky May be too good.at last he had met sommeone who will truelly put his chin to the test.IKE,S PUNCHING POWER HAS ALWAYS BEEN UNDERESTIMATED.

  8. charl-o says:

now im hearing that wink negotiated himself out of the fight.. can anyone shed light on this

  9. Dave Cantwell says:

Hey, How about the # 2 contender behind Winky, Kelly Pavlik. 28-0
25 knockouts he has the best record in middle weight boxing. Is anyone willing to fight him?

  10. MadMan says:

I would have liked to see Ike Quartey make a move in the division, but placing him up against Winky is not going to help him. Winky is the man to beat in my book. Name one fighter in the Middle or Welterweight division who can take him? This seems more like a tune-up fight. Winky needs to get that re-match against Taylor so that the Middleweight division can have a sole champion.

  11. Matt W says:

This should be a good fight. Wright should win and set up a rematch with Taylor. But Quartey is a top notch fighter, with good power, so he could well win it too. He’s not a finished has-been like Tito was.

I have no problem with Taylor fighting Ouma. Taylor had three tough fights in a row and he could use a rest. No, wait. Since when is Ouma considered easy?

    Taylor/Ouma
    Wight/Quartey

Sounds like some good match-ups in the MW division.

  12. G-Pal says:

Everyone seems to be forgetting, Winky said immediately after his fight with Taylor he didn’t want a rematch. He also tried to screw his promoter during the negotiations for the first fight with Taylor, so everyone needs to get off Taylor and put a little blame on Winky because I’m sure he deserves some of it.

Madman, there IS a sole middleweight champion….and his name is Jermain Taylor. Winky had a chance to take it, but he turned into Carl Lewis in the 12th round and didn’t take the title. Shame on him.

Matt W., you’re right about one thing…those are two good matchups and hopefully the winners will face each other. The heavyweight champions should follow this lead.

  13. Vincent says:

G-Pal is right. Winky was the one who squirmed out of every rematch. He said it immediately after the first fight and skillfully blamed Taylor and his “robbery” for it. He did screw Gary Shaw and join De La Hoya instead. And now he turned down 5 million to get a rematch. How much does he want….even Barrera got only 1 Million to fight Juarez.

Me thinks Jermains strong showing has discouraged Winky from seeking out a second fight. Ergo; Jermain is the number 1 middleweight. Not Winky. And Winky did not win the first fight as he keeps saying. A draw was completely justified.

  14. jamie marshall says:

matt s tito wasn’t a finished fighter ike would get his ass handed to him by tito member verno knocked “the bazoka” down what would tito do!

  15. scott mcmillan says:

winky wright deserves another shot at taylor, and it won’t be long before jermain has to give it to winky on his terms to finally try and silence the doubters who truly believe he lost the first fight. challenges like ouma are’t what the fans want and i truly believe boxing would be a much better sport if champions would be willing to put their neck on the line against top notch contenders, rather than have their promoters talk about ‘high risk, little reward’.. anyways, hopefully winky and jermain can both come through their next fights and square off against each other again..
