Today in Boxing History: Marciano vs. Walcott I

On this day in 1952, Rocky Marciano won the heavyweight title with a 13th round knockout of Jersey Joe Walcott at Philadelphia’s Municipal Stadium.

After winning his first 42 fights, Marciano finally earned a shot at the heavyweight belt against Walcott, who had just won the title from Ezzard Charles three months earlier. For his first defense, Walcott figured he would have an easy time with Marciano and his seemingly rudimentary attack.

For the first twelve rounds, Walcott was correct. He put Marciano on the canvas in round one and was decisively ahead going into the 13th. However, what Marciano lacked in finesse was made up in power and determination. Exhausted, with eyes swollen shut, he put his head against Walcott’s and pushed him backwards.

When he had him against the ropes, Marciano fired the most famous right in boxing history, a short into Walcott’s left jaw. Walcott’s whole body crumbled to the canvas and he was counted out 43 seconds into the 13th round.
