Add De La Hoya To The Mix With King And Arum

By Michael Woods September 24th, 2006

Golden Boy’s Oscar De La Hoya’s Midas touch

To this point, the boxing promotion scene featured two heavyweights, and a collection of lesser lights vying for remaining pieces of the pie.

Would you agree now that Oscar De La Hoya has to be tossed into the mix with Don King and Bob Arum?

Oscar De La Hoya signed Manny Pacquiao to a seven fight deal and the way he did it is looking like a textbook snag from the King playbook. De La Hoya grabbed Pacquiao right after Pacman arrived at the Los Angeles airport on Monday.

ESPN.com says Pacquiao initially wanted the signing to be a quiet deal, because Top Rank is running the show on Nov. 18, when Pacquiao meets Erik Morales for the third time.

“We had conversations with Manny Pacquiao about signing him, but our conversations were primarily about this fight with Morales,” Top Rank’s Todd duBoef told ESPN.com. “If he wants to sign with Golden Boy, good for him. How does it affect the Morales-Pacquiao fight? It doesn’t. They had come to us about working with Manny in the future. If he signed with Golden Boy, good for him. Congratulations.”

Bob Arum sounded a bit more salty with the defection.

“If he signed with Golden Boy, that’s part of the business,” he told ESPN’s Dan Rafael. “I don’t give a [expletive]. I really don’t care. We have enough on our plate to occupy us. It would have been nice to promote Manny but if we can’t, we can’t. Life goes on.

Arum promoted the first two fights between Morales and Pacquiao.

Should Pacquiao handle Morales, Shelly Finkel told TSS that he’d next look to set up another bout with Barrera, and there shouldn’t be any dealbreaking hurdles to that, since De La Hoya now promotes them both.

With no clear, obvious, seamless line of succession in place for King and Arum, Oscar De La Hoya is now positioned to be the undisputed champion of promoters going into the second half of the decade.

good thing that paquiao signed with de la hoya. de la hoya probably experienced how to be manipulated by greedy promoters and because of that, he will not do it to his boxers who are the source of his fortune. good luck pacman and de la hoya. may you succeed in your endeavour honestly, fairly and justly as a boxer and as a promoter.

no comment for the meantime until no final statement/confirmation from both parties.Just work and train hard our hero PACMAN!!!!!!!

Pacquiao should choose a better deal. If he signs with GBP, it would be a promoter-boxer contract. If Manny signs with Top Rank, it would be a promoter-boxer and business partner contract. I don’t have to tell everybody which is better. But I would like to tell the world that the entire Philippine nation is after the welfare of it’s hero, Manny Pacquiao.

It’s time that boxing falls into the hands of those who make it what it is…….THE FIGHTERS! I could give much less than a damn about the Arums and Kings of the world who have NEVER had the courage to climb between the ropes and risk their lives for this game, but make WAY

  5. DIggy Says:

more money tan those who do! Kudos to Oscar, Shane, Bernard, Winky, and Roy(who has promoted his own fights for years). Put the money in the hands of those who actually deserve it!!!!!!!

I’ve often heard Oscar de la Hoya say that in his company, “The boxer is in control.” That’s good refreshing philosophy in the boxing business. We’ll see if the philosophy is really the cornerstone of GBP’s dealings with its boxers. Good luck to Golden Boy and Manny Pacquiao if indeed they have decided to be partners.

  7. Samjoy Says:

Please just don’t bother my idol!!!!!!!!! Good luck to your Nov. 18 date with Erik and have fun puching him.

  9. Mike Says:

Oscar is GOLDEN BOY and Manny is MONEY MAN. I hope Pacman is able to still to fight on Nov. 18th, not affected by this latest and yet another distraction.

i think its just a money matter, pacman is one hot selling pancakes, and maybe dela hopia is quite loosen his “bata” barera i mean, he see more future to pacman, he is a boxer once and i think he want to make his gold shinnier than b4…give me more!!!

  11. pinoy to bai!! Says:

what about this people….. pacman vs dela hopia in raw? or barrera vs freddie roach. he he he…im just joking….put it in my ass!!!

  12. Phil Flag Says:

It is probably that Manny wants life to go on. He is the one controlling his future so it’s good for him to decide which way he goes. Some Filipinos like Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista and Z “The Dream” Gorres etc. are already with Golden Boy. So for me I think it’s the best way for Manny to sign a good deal with GBP. There’s no doubt Oscar dela Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions is better than Top Rank and Don King as more top rated boxers are now on his bandwagon. That means this boxers have trust and confidence in Oscar. Good luck to Manny and GBP, we want more exciting boxing in the near future!!!

Quote from the topic starter “Would you agree now that Oscar De La Hoya has to be tossed into the mix with Don King and Bob Arum?”

    answer:yes.

  15. DaveB Says:

Good for Pacquiao. I hope GBP turns out to be everything I hope it is. I certainly don’t trust those two snakes - King & Arum. Boxing will be better off with honest promoters and without those two.

  16. Vincent Says:

Maybe we can see Barrera vs Pac Man now. If he gets by Morales a second time; which he might.

The time is for Golden Boy Promotion and Pacman. Everyone knows that Del La Hoya is smart boxer and promoter. He knows what is best for his boxers, he’s been there and that…. As for Pacman, you have done something that will be for the better interest for you and your family and most important your entire country. You choose to carry this on your shoulder’s, so everything you do, what you do, how you do it and who you do it with, will have direct impact on YOU! You strive the energy from your people, you feel the Strength from them. So if I were you be sensitive and have true compassion as they have show you from the day your name came a house hold name. You are your peek and eveyone wants a piece of you. Don’t let all the glamour get the best of you PACMAN. You doing fine right now, but, beware of the fire works. You wouldn’t have gotten where you are if wasn’t for your entire country supporting you. So, when you make those important choices, you best belive this! Don’t screw your people! nor your family.. Don’t for get where you started from. Golden Boy Promotion will take care of you, just have trust in him as your people trusted in you. BIBA Golden Boy.. BIBA Manny Pacquiao..

Now, that Golden Boy vs Arum situation over Pacman is on path for disaster for Pinoy “PACMAN”. BE AWARE - Read between the lines. I really don’t understand Pacman thinking here or is its his close managers thinking for him. Who knows. Now that the doors are open for Pacman, its seems that when Pacman gets closer to having his career boom and the potential to acheive greatness for his country, he gets himself in situation. I can see once, but, twice, BE REAL.. I don’t know if Pacman plays chest, but, in this game, the concepts is the same. Right now Del La hoya is playing his hands good. I don’t know if Manny knows want he wants, is he thinking that he can influeance both parties to anney up for higher bidder. I think not. You mit find yourself on the road to desperation and lonely. This is just the begining for Manny. He may have beating some the best true warriors. The level has just move up for Manny, a ture test of his ability has not really be tested in terms of Morales, Mayweather, Barrera and other’s in the 130 to 145 pound-for-pounds. I am very concern about the movement of the PACMAN TEAM. I hope things turn out for you guys. You have really lost a promotor who is in my eyes is the best for PACMAN career. God Bless you PACMAN.

  19. Jammer Says:

Pacquiao-Barrera “Rematch in Jeopardy” . You know, so what if these two don’t fight. Barrera has been there and done that. Pacman this has alott to prove, why! NO BELT. NO BELT NO BELT. He is done yet, no disrespect to Pacman, but he still has to contend with the best-of-the-best i.e Mayweather, De leon, Hatton and more. He is going to have to convince not only me but others of his fans that he can thake the HEAT Bra. So, what then..
