Jones/Manfredo Fight On Track For January

Roy Jones vs. Peter Manfredo negotiations continue

It looks like the Roy Jones comeback train is still on track.

Negotiations are continuing for a fight that will pit Jones, who bested Prince Badi Ajamu in July, against Contender 1 runner-up Peter Manfredo on January 19 at the Staples Center in LA.

Contender honcho Jeff Wald has been in talks with Jones’ people, and is confident the deal will be struck.

Manfredo (25-3) is booked to fight Rhode Island rival Joey Spina (19-0-1) in an ESPN Contender show on Oct. 14, and provided he gets past Spina, the date with Jones (50-4) will likely be his.

manfedo will win this fight due in large part because his ability to fight until the last bell and his ever improving skills

  2. Lawdog says:

Roy Jones at his worst is better than any Contender at his best. Roy’s skills appear to be significantly diminished, but even with that, Manfredo cannot touch him. Roy is trying to use this as a springboard to put him back on the map, and I personally wish that he would retire. But in spite of that, he is in a different league, a much better one.

Jamie…….NO! Gotta agree with Lawdog on this one.

  4. wayne says:

G-Pal I gotta agree with Jamie on this one. Why. Im a firm believer in percentages. The younger Manfredo against the aging Jones Jr. Manfredo is improving. Manfredo has at least 10 years of a youth advantage against Jones Jr.

  5. SHAFT 71 says:

MANFREDO DOESNT STAND A CHANCE AGAINST JONES. IF MANFREDO COULDNT EVEN PUT DOWN SERGIO MORA, WHOS CRAZY ENOUGH TO THINK THAT HES GONNA DO SOME REAL DAMAGE TO ROY. ROYS RING EXPERIENCE AND SKILL SURPASSES MANFREDOS BY LIGHT YEARS. ROY CAN BEAT MANFREDO BLINDFOLDED. THE SAD THING IS THAT ROY WONT BE BLINDFOLDED. IM ALREADY STARTIN TO FEEL BAD FOR MANFRDO AND THIS FIGHT ISNT EVEN OFFICIAL YET. ROY HAS SOMETHING TO PROVE TO EVERYONE INCLUDING HIMSELF. AND I THINK HE’LL END UP USING MANFREDO AS A PUNCHING BAG TO DO IT. I DONT THINK MANFREDO KNOWS WHAT HES GETTING HIMSELF INTO. HE AINT FIGHTING SOME CONTENDER, HES FIGHTING A LEGEND.

  6. Lawdog says:

My point above is not a testament to how good Roy a fighter that Roy Jones currently is, but to how bad the Contender fighters are. If they really were true Contenders (successful amateur careers, Golden Gloves, etc.), they would not be on a reality series.

  7. David Payne says:

Manfredo lost to Alfonso Gomez, a game welterweight.

Jones is going to knock his ass from here to TimBuktoo.

  8. Beatemup! says:

MY DAWG IS TRAINING NOW! HE HAS HIS MOTIVATION BACK WHEN IT COMES TO GETTING UP FOR A FIGHT….I ADMIT HIS EGO GOT BIGGER THEN HIS FIGHT GAME THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS BUT NOW HE TAKES NO FIGHTER LIGHTLY AND HE IS TRAINING AGAIN…WE PLAY BASKETBALL ALL THE TIME TO GET MORE RUNNING IN AND EVEN HIS CONVERSATION HAS GOTTEN BACK TO BATTERING BODIES AND STR8 RIGHTING HEADS…I WOULD CALL THE ASS WHOOPING MANFREDO A CONSERVATIVE BOXING LESSON…WHO WANTS SOME?????

  9. pitbull says:

This is pathetic.Doe ssomeone really see roy jones get in the ring with manfredo. Can someone explain me this beacause i dont understand what is ther point of this fight..I dontt think roy jones is going to be around for a long time so why is he talkin this fagget

  10. CC Long says:

Manfredo sure hasn’t reached the level that RJJ has lived in for many years. Even with the ko’s that Roy has suffered at the hands of two of the best lightheavyweights at the time, he should still have enuff stuff left to maybe not befuddle or bedazzle Manfredo, but to most likely decision him!

  11. mario says:

I think that Manfredo Jr. will put up a good fight. He will fight to the very end losing or night and if anyone has that much heart then the will go far. RJJ would be done if he goes down once cause when the boy goes down he may get up but he is defeated in the sence of mentaly. im a huge RJJ fan but also on the other hand A HUGE FAN OF MANFREDO. i think that the skills he is learning from his new trainer and with him not easily being defeated menaly that he will win this fight indefinatley.

  12. wayne says:

Good Points Mario. Freddie Roach is Manfredo’s new trainer as of his last fight with Scott “The Sandman” Pemberton.

  13. JesseJames says:

Manfredo won’t get past Spina, let alone Roy Jones Jr.

  14. jacob says:

all manfredo got to do is land one clean shot on roy jones. which it wont be easy but he got 10 or 12 rounds to do it so it will be very intresting.but i still se roy jones winning.

  15. Jobes says:

I think Manfredo has a shot of winning RJJ. People thought that Pemberton would knock Manfredo out but it actually went the other way… so who knows?…maybe he will win…anyways, Freddie Roach is his new trainer, manfredo has been improving, i can tell from the pemberton fight anyway…

  16. joe mike says:

i think manfredo will win if he can land a big shot, he has more power than what people tend to say and with is improving skills he will be ready to go if the fight happens.

  17. Ryan says:

Peter is getting alot better with Freddie Roach, his new world class trainer, he absolutely demolished Scottie Pemberton, and manhandled Spina KO’ing him in 3 rounds falt and the twel being thrown in. That being said and the constant talent IMPROVEMENT, with RJJ having talent loss, id say it will be a very intersting fight in which while id really like peter to win im afraid Jones Jr will take BUT leaving peter junior with a lesson leanred in which a year or two from now he can emerge into a world class fighter.
