Calvin Brock No Superfighter
By Uncategorized October 18th, 2006Calvin Brock, aka the Boxing Banker, is keeping it real
Grand announcements, a savage PR blitz and international telephone conference calls aside, contender Calvin Brock, slated to fight Wladimir Klitschko at Madison Square Garden for the Ukrainian champ’s IBF heavyweight title on November 11, has withdrawn from his contract to fight in the $5 million one-night only, super duper Superfighter Heavyweight Boxing Tournament on December 1 in Melbourne, Australia.
“I am pleased that Superfighter has shown its integrity in the betterment of the sport of boxing by agreeing to cooperate with me and allow me to follow my dream and fight for the heavyweight championship of the world,” said the gentlemanly Brock. “I think the Superfighter concept is a great addition to the world of boxing, and I look forward to fighting in the Superfighter tournament without jeopardizing my goal to become and remain the heavyweight champion of the world.â€?
And as good old Jake Donovan of Fight Beat was kind enough to point out, Chris Byrd, another ostensible Superfighter, is fighting Eliceo Castillo on the Wlad-Brock undercard, so his participation too is in doubt.
Were that not enough to throw a wrench into the whole Superfighter phenomenon, “Samuel Peter, according to Jake, “isn’t very interested in fighting in Australia, either.

Byrd is really in Superfighter and is not fighting on the November 11th card at the Garden - Castillo refused the fight a week ago when it was offered and the Superfighter option was best for Byrd. Don’t put so much weight on BoxRec and the info from the Commissions. Whatever one thinks of Byrd, especially coming off the Klitschko bout, no one at heavy or cruiser will fight him (they wouldn’t when he was Heavyweight Champ for over two years). Whether it goes or not, at least Superfighter gives 8 boxers the hope of decent paydays and an interesting format in an even more interesting location. From Brock’s statement, it appears that the Superfighter people were “gentlemen” by allowing him out of him commitment.

All they have to do is ask Mike Tyson to join and the media frenzy will be unstoppable.
He’s ‘training’ for four rounders anyway.
The chance of $5million for beating Ty Fields and Cruiserweights must be appealing?
Otherwise Samil Sam, Danny Williams, Lou Savarese….Kevin McBride…..Union Cane……Spider Rico…..they’re all free.

David Payne said “Spider Rico”….You’re killing me……I believe the next line (in a gravely voice), “Spider Rico’s a bum.”
