By Robert Ecksel October 28th, 2006Former heavyweight champ Trevor Berbick murdered in Jamaica
Trevor Berbick, onetime heavyweight champion of the world, was murdered Saturday in Jamaica by an unknown attacker wielding a hatchet or machete.
Berbick, 51, was found in a church courtyard in his home village of Norwich, 146 miles east of Kingston. He was suffering from a gaping head wound and pronounced dead at the Port Antonio Hospital.
The former champ had a “chop wound to the head, according to Reuters.
Trevor Berbick represented Jamaica at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games in Montreal and lived for many years in Canada. He turned pro in 1978 and won the WBC heavyweight crown by defeating Pinklon Thomas in 1986.
Berbick returned to Jamaica in 2003 after being deported from the United States, where he had several run-ins with the law and did time in the American penal system
Berbick was the last man to meet the great Muhammad Ali in the ring, in 1981, and held the title until to losing it to a rampaging young phenom out of Brooklyn named Mike Tyson in 1986
The murder of Trevor Berbick is believed to be drug-related.

News like this is never welcomed, but when you choose a certain path there are consequences to pay. Maybe others can learn from this tragedy.

This is a very sad day, for a fine man of ‘Great’ acomplishments; to die such a horendous untimely death! I am a Bahamian, and I do recall the time back when He briefly held the WBC heavyweight title in 1986, before losing it to Mike Tyson. He is also noted for being the last man to fight Muhammad Ali, winning their 10-round contest in Nassau, Bahamas on December 11, 1981 by unanimous decision.
Berbick Your Soul Lives On…
Peace & Respect…

I hate to be the one to rain on a man’s parade, especially when the man lay dead after such a horrific crime. I have no doubt Berbick was a good human being and good fighter. But let’s not exaggerate his boxing accomplishments. He won an alphabet title from Pinklon Thomas, who was never anything special. Berbick was fortunate to be considered a “champion” at all. Under today’s Ring Championship policy, he wouldn’t be considered one. That’s why Tyson didn’t become the youngest champion in history when he beat him. That came only after Tyson decimated Michael Spinks, who beat Larry Holmes, who beat Muhammad Ali, who beat Leon Spinks, etc.

IT REALLY DOESNT MATTER HOW YOU WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP THESE DAYS SO WHY WOULD IT MATTER IN THE PAST, THE MAN HAS DONE MORE THAN ANY OF US HAS, GOOD OR BAD HE WAS A HUMAN AND A CHAMPION AND WILL BE MISSED BY MANY

It’s sad that Trevor Berbick is dead but this tragedy should serve as a reminder to us all that karma has a strange way of creeping up and biting us on the butt when we least expect it. When we commit horrible acts they have a way, sometimes, of setting the course for bad things happening to the people commiting the bad acts. Trevor berbuck didn’t deserve to be murdered but his bad karma finally caught up with him.

Do not judge the man by the unfortunate occurences in his past. How many of you knew him personally? Pass not judgement for you knoweth not how you will go out of this world. Trevor made Jamaicans proud when he won that heavyweight title. Although he was beset by problems and challenges, who are we to judge? Are we without sin? What skeletons do we have in our closets that no one but ourselves and God know about? Famous people’s wrongs are known to the world but ordinary folks can do wrong all the time and get away with it because no one gives a rat’s ass. The man’s been murdered for God’s sake! At least give him the respect he deserves for his accomplishments and let him rest in peace.
