Jermain Taylor retirement plans already in the works

WBC middleweight champion Jermain “Bad Intentions Taylor intends to abandon the middleweight division next year to move up in weight to fight as a super middleweight, and the man he would most like to meet is undefeated Welsh boxing sensation Joe Calzaghe.

Jermain TaylorIn addition to Taylor’s packing on the pounds to go after Calzaghe, in part because of the difficulty he’s had in making the 160 lb. limit, he also, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, plans to throw in the towel and retire from boxing by August of 2009, when he is 30 years old.

“Calzaghe is a fight I would love because he’s supposed to be the man there and those are the guys I want,” said Taylor, adding that “Boxing is a job, that’s all. What’s the point of sticking around? To get extra, extra rich? I’m already rich, richer than I ever thought, so I don’t need to be any richer. I’m going to get out and never look back.â€?

If Mayweather and Taylor both hold true on their promises to retire… then the boxing world will be in more trouble than it already is.

  2. Jason Says:

I say make your $$$ and bounce JT…spend your life with Erica and the kids…your real fans will always have your back. There’s too many guys out there like Tyson(side show), and Holyfield who are just trying to make a quick buck and stay in the limelight. Walk away on your own terms man. ARKANSAS LOVES JT!!!

  3. Ben Says:

I agree with Alex. If you think that boxing fans will stand by you while you quit in your prime, you are wrong. I want a warrior. Not someone with three close fights calling it an end because he’s successfull. If that’s the case, we must be paying you too much. I’ll gladly walk with my 50 and get behind another fighter who is here to stay, good or bad. By his own admission, JT is still learning.

  4. TJM JR Says:

Blah, blah, blah. He’s not going to retire at 30. Don’t you ever imagine quitting your job in a few years? Then what happens? The “few years” come around and you think, “Man, I’d love to quit my job in a few years.”

thats the correct decission for jermain taylor, to move up and fight bigger guys, because he is not an exciting fighter, his wins over hopkins and a draw over winky didnt prove his greatness, he is like a young kid still knowing how to knock out his opponents, retirement is not a subject to call on JT because his accomplishment in boxing is only little, and not impressive, i think if he will capture titles in three weight divisions by a knocked out victories, well, then retirement will be a good topic to discuss about JT. also its a good option for him to dump emmanuel steward and look for a better trainer.

  6. Phillip Says:

He may have a short career, but obviously he wants it to be an impressive one. This man is talented, fearless, and a warrior of the sport.

  7. Phil Says:

That’s what they all say. Then they stick around until we pray they retire.

  8. NikoUY Says:

Taylor to retire…. I HOPE HE DOES!!! Who is Taylor? What has he accomplished? Give me a break… before you retire, you need to fight…. so please, SHUT UP and start fighting!!!!!!! Probably Joe Calzaghe will retire him….

every comment made here is correct ,you all have good points.i find it funny today that guys like jermaine fight about 40 /50 fights and then are ready to hang them up when back in the day guys had that many fights before they even were mentioned for a title shot. they were old by todays standards and still fighting sharp. ill tell you why,the fighters fought !!!! every month every week sometimes.
they’d have a rematch in a month or two not in 1/3 years like some of these guys. the money is killing the sport, thats the focus now not who your fighting or want to fight its how much am i getting paid and you cant knock it because why should the promotors get the doe ? they arent fighting so what do you do to remedy the problem ? i dont know ,all you could do is make it maditory that fighters have to compete every 2 months unless physically unable to or lose your ranking. yea sure ,that;ll happen right?
the bad part about all the time inbetween fights is youll never really know how great a guy could have been.the busier the sharper you are . jermaine taylor is a nice guy and i wish him well but they just arent what they use to be.i wish a guy would come along that just wanted to fight all the time.

  10. JKC Says:

Phil, is pitching a t shirt idea Everlast probably never will use, but should. Picture Evander Holyfield’s face on a black shirt. He’s the Holy Man, so it would be fitting to have, “They stick around until we pray they retire.”

    I’d wear it. Genius, Phil.

  11. B Says:

How about Jermain Taylor vs. Mikkel Kessler?

  12. Rob M. Says:

I think PBF just started boxings latest trend of “retiring” to get leverage on matchups.
I wouldn’t be even a little suprised to see Pacquio, Cotto and Winky all anounce retirement plans in the next month.

  13. G-Pal Says:

If Jermain is serious about retiring in two years, then he needs to be active to secure his legacy. Before he even thinks about Calzaghe, he needs to get past Ouma, then he should have a rematch with Winky if Wright will come to terms.

  14. Pistone Says:

Oscar De La Hoya was going to retire by age 30 to become an architect. There is no story here…

  15. wayne Says:

Jermain Taylor can beat Calzaghe. Remember Calzaghe will be 35 or 36 by the time Taylor moves up.

  16. AaronW Says:

Taylor should try to make a fight with Roy Jones Jr., I think Roy could actually pull out the decision that Hopkins missed.

  17. daniel Says:

JT should fight joe calzaghe so calzaghe can whoop another yanks ass……

  18. ted Says:

I hope he fights Joe. That fight will definitely put him into an early retirement.
