Wladimir Klitschko’s Big Show At MSG

IBF champ Wladimir Klitschko one-twos his way to victory

Wladimir KlitschkoThe big man put on quite a show in the big room. Wladimir Klitschko played the Garden on Saturday night and he responded the way all of the greats have in the past. With a flair.

Over the first couple of rounds it might have been easy to dismiss Klitschko as a guy who just doesn’t get it. It was frustrating to watch. But here’s why. Calvin Brock was doing the only thing he could do to try to win the fight. He wasn’t going to outbox Klitschko, so he tried to crowd him, tried to work inside. He tried to smother the big guy.

But give Klitschko credit. He stayed composed and he kept popping that jab. That stiff left jab won him the first four rounds. Now here’s where the fight changed. In the fifth, Klitschko finally found the distance. He had enough separation from Brock to make the right hand effective. What gave him that separation? The left jab!!!

With Klitschko immediately establishing that jab, Brock was reluctant to walk into it by the fifth round. So as soon as Brock stayed back, the right hand started finding its home. Once that happened, the fight was over.

OK. So I was off by two rounds with my prediction, but I wrote it here first on TSS, the jab and right hand win the fight for Klitschko.

One last thing, what a moving tribute to Ali – not Laila, Muhammad – as the Garden crowd chanted his name upon entering the arena. That’s all for now. Keep punching!

i love K O but it would hav been cool to have 2 ‘russians’ un-crowned in 2 consecutive weeks and hav 2 new AmericaN champs, BUT…….. anyway i knew my man KlitschkO had it. beautiful fight i knew it was over when he laned the first of the three big rights that ended it. hes gonna unify and clean out the division. plus… lewis said it right……….. the glass chin is out.. his last 2 fights, he got clipped and even went down against peter and got back up… “the chin got stronger”…. we all knew what was gonna happen and whats goin to happen. manny and K O are fu**n Shi* up…… good luck K O… briggs bext,, u saw him watchin in the crowd… start trainin . i know i said hes gonna make a dent in the division but im back to reality!!!!! where u at vitali!!!!!!!! lets go

  4. Vincent Says:

Did Lewis say that about the chin? if so..yes Wald K just got a whole lot more frightening. Bigmouth Briggs will be easily defeated by the improved Wlad. Wlad is a cut above McCline and Brock and Briggs who are about the same calibre of fighter…competent but not brilliant. Wlad seems up there with Lennox.

I think too, its time to stop moaning about the Wlad chin, the man learns from mistakes and remember, he’s only 30. I seriously believe Wlad K is the real thing in this division.

  5. A2 Says:

Wlad has to endure a lot more punishment than he absorbed last night without crumbling before you can say his chin is not an issue.

Klitscho’s performance was great!!! He came into the ring in great shape and looked well-conditioned (Something that American Heavyweights don’t have the drive, self-discipline or motivation to do). Brock came in out of shape. It’s hard for me to believe that he trained for this fight. He looked pitiful!!! When I saw how terrible Brock’s body looked, and how cut Klitscho’s body appeared, I said to myself, this fight won’t go sixth rounds. We won’t have a true American Heavyweight Champion into the American heavyweights understand that you can’t come into a championship fight out of shape. It’s not that Cal Brock didn’t have the tools to beat Klitscho, he prepare his body to fight a championship fight. Brock would have had better head movement, he would have been able to move side-to-side to confuse Klitscho from different angles, and he would have been able to put his punches in better and quicker combinations. A prime Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield was the last Mohegans for a well-conditioned and well-prepared heavyweights. I don’t see any heavyweights out there haveing that kind of motivation and discipline. Klitscho woul have gotten stopped with 9 rounds with a prime Holyfield and prime Tyson would have gotten past his jab to KO Klitscho within 3 rounds. He is no great! He can’t fight from the inside. He has to tie you up. He would not have been quick and strong enough to tie and prime Tyson. He’s a good champion, not a great one.

true jason, brock was slow, weak ow!! wlad is right when he says they shouldent call hem champion, this was nothing for hem man
i think toney would have done bater than brock! a,a ,a!.

wlad need’s a rough fighter, and i think that maskaev or briggs would do good agenst wlad.

  8. bruno Says:

jamie i am here man.brock was nothing really,i would have done bater than hem jamie.wlad hasent got some one good but i think that maskaev would try bater than brock,or shanno

4 more fight’s and hes with lennox lewis jamie, undisputed!!.
he has 75% chance of becoming the man in the division.

  9. bruno Says:

i think wlad should fight evender holyfield first befor eny unification.the real deal can handle wlad because of the hand speed and skils he’s got.

  10. Stephen Says:

Klitschko-Holyfield ? In his prime Holy never had the hand speed. Look at Lewis-Holyfield I -and now imagine a bigger faster younger Lewis and a much older Holyfield…

  11. Jason Says:

In my opinion the last true Undisputed Heavyweight Champion was Mike Tyson. He fought every Champion even if they didn’t deserve to be called Champion. Lennox Lewis wasn’t undisputed. Chris Byrd was Champion. and so was John Ruiz. We don’t know if he would have beaten Chris Byrd, John Ruiz he could have came in the ring unprepared because of the lack of motivation (See Hasim Rahman who also loss to John Ruiz) to train for a weak champion. A true Champion snatches the belt away from everyone the way Mike Tyson conquered the division in the late 1980s. That’s what made Tyson great also! A have a great deal of respect for Wladmir. He wants to go after every Champion. Instead of Lennox trying to unify the belts by fighting Ruiz and Byrd, he goes after a washed up Tyson (Who didn’t want to fight him and tried everything in the book to stop the fight from happening). Lennox lost my respect after the Tyson fight. His legacy did not go higher by beating up a washed up fighter. The fight was pretty predictable. Everybody knew Tyson would try to knock him out in the first round and get frustrated and tire out until he gets himself knocked out.

  12. wayne Says:

Klitschko vs. Valuev. That would be a barn burner.

  13. A2 Says:

Jason, you are giving a lot of credit to the corrupt sanctioning bodies. Who cares who the W-whatever calls champion? Lennox fought Tyson because they both made an absurd amount of money and it was the fight people wanted to see. (Which is why it made a lot of money?)

I agree with you about heavyweights not conditioning themselves properly, by and large.

Klitschko verse Holyfield is a mismatch. Let Holyfield fight and beat Peter or Brock or Valuev and then he deserves a shot at Klitschko.

Thanks for another great article. What ever happened with your play Kid Shamrock? Will it be playing again anywhere else-IT WAS A GREAT HEARTFELT REAL STORY. They should make it into a movie.
Q.- Does the boxing commissioner in NJ have the authority to signal the referee stop the fight?
