Oscar De La Hoya to fight Floyd Mayweather in May 2007

Oscar De La Hoya has signed to fight Floyd Mayweather in May 2007, said Los Angeles news agencies on Monday.

Oscar De La HoyaDespite reports that De La Hoya was miffed by Mayweather’s remarks during his post-fight interview with HBO, the East Los Angeles boxer shifted gears and will reportedly fight the WBC welterweight titleholder Mayweather.

A site has not been determined but unconfirmed reports say that De La Hoya will make $20 million and Mayweather $10 million. The two locations in the running for the showdown are Los Angeles Staples Center or Las Vegas.

It’s a great fight but I don’t see a knockout. This could be another Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield, Bernard Hopkins and Jermaine Taylor, Felix Trinidad and Oscar De La Hoya….You get my drift. It’s the biggest fight out there but it will be a very technical fight. If Floyd Mayweather Jr would not exchange with Baldomir he will be extra cautious against De La Hoya which is equal in strength but alot of steps quicker than Baldy. It’s the biggest fight out there but only the true sweet science fans will be treated to the true art of boxing. And that’s not to go out there and have a Gatti-Ward fight. It will be a classic! But, just not a Gatti-Ward classic. Remember Sugar Ray Leonard and Marvelous Marvin Hagler wasn’t a Gatti-Ward fight but it’s still classic.

  2. wayne Says:

Mayweather Jr. schools Oscar De La Hoya. No Question about it.

  3. Mark Says:

You know what it takes to fight Floyd Mayweather? It takes brass balls to fight Floyd Mayweather.

If De La Hoya wants to close…CLOSE…he’ll need to be fast on his feet and use his speed to counter Mayweather’s attack. Trying to be quicker on offense than Mayweather will get you nowhere; just ask Zab Judah.

De La Hoya is a closer. He knows when to turn it on in order to seal the deal. As the heavier puncher I can see De La Hoya stopping Mayweather late if he puts in some serious bodywork and counters effectively.

  4. charl-o Says:

i agree with jason. i still got mayweather winning before 12 rounds. if he gets on fire and starts pelting de la hoya late into the fight. hes too quick for an old de la hoya to land those heavy left hooks and what not.

    floyd late TKO….

this is gonna be the first fight to actually EXCITE me since hopkins taylor 1

  5. Adam Says:

This is a true money fight. It has the potential to be a classic-up there with Hagler-Leonard. This is how I see it:

Oscar is by the far physically stronger then anyone Floyd has faced. Oscar is fast and has good power, especially in that left hook. Oscar can use pressure to wear opponants down. Floyd dosent do well against pressure fighters, just ask Castillo.

Floyd does have the advantage of having a more consistant fight and training schedule so you can argue that is going to be sharper. Floyd does have the quickness advantage too. This is the problem that I see with Floyd: He is going to need all of the power he can muster to kept the bigger and stronger Oscar off of him. If his right hand is injured, then he wont have full power in his good hand to to do that. He is going to need combos and grit to do the job against Oscar.

I see Oscar winning this one because of his size, power, and Floyd’s imjured right hand. It should be an excellent fight.

  6. Adam Says:

    Mark, you know the science.

  7. AaronW Says:

This might be the most hyped disappointment in boxing history. If Mayweather managed to make fighting the predictable, plodding Baldomir a boring technical victory, what do you think he’ll do against DLH? Floyd will just stay on the backfoot most of the time and use his shoulder defense to dodge Oscar’s charges and pot shot him. Yea, there’s the possibility Oscar overwhelmes Floyd and gets a stoppage, it’s more likely this goes to a decision for Floyd as he scores single shots that don’t affect Oscar. I basically made the same prediction for the Baldomir fight when everyone was saying it would be competitive.

  8. Morgan Says:

The only way Oscar wins this fight is if Floyd breaks his hand. I understand Oscar is bigger and strong, but Floyd is too quick, too slick and too skilled for Oscar to handle. If Oscar can’t get close to Floyd, I don’t think at 34 he’ll have the footspeed to keep up.

I see Oscar swinging and missing with that left hook, and I see Floyd just plain outboxing him. Floyd’s a little too smart to stand around and let oscar bang him to the body, so it will be interesting to see how Oscar plans to make Floyd stand still and fight.

On paper, I agree this fight can be another Hagler-Leonard, but let’s remember who won that fight and why…

    Floyd by UD

  9. AaronW Says:

Oh yea, assuming he beats De la Hoya, if Mayweather really wants to close his career and be considered an all time legend: go down to 140 and dust Hatton and Cotto, two fighters Floyd can look great against like he did against Gatti, and call it a day being 40-0. We know Floyd has no intention of getting in a ring with Margarito or Paul Williams.

  10. Paulie Says:

    Aaron, I agree.

Firtsly, I think he can get past Golden Boy. After all, Oscar is older, slower and past his best.

But if Floyd wants to go out in style, he needs to fight tougher opponents. Hatton and Cotto would be great, considering he’s too chicken to face Margarito and Williams.

  11. Paulie Says:

I wonder who will train Oscar for this fight?

  12. Bigg Says:

Please, hatton and cotto are you sure you know anything about boxing. When PBF was at 140, they remain quiet, why should he go back. cotto can’t make weight, and collazo beat hatton. DLH know if he’s loses it will be to the best, PBF

  13. beatemup Says:

…A breath of fresh fighting finally…No doubt dlh will be up for this fight…but floyd is going to be even more up for this fight than any fight he’s had ever…Floyd will expose dlh..not that he can’t fight but that he might win only 2 maybe three rounds against mayweather…and thats on one judges score card…floyd wins 10 rounds in this fight by UD…say something???

  14. Lawdog Says:

    There are two other factors:

    1. What weight will they fight at? If Floyd puts on 7 more lbs to move up to Jr. Middleweight, there may be an impact to his speed. Not much, but
enough to help Oscar catch him.

2.) Who will be in Oscar’s corner? If Floyd Sr. is involved, that could cause
problems in both corners. Would he train Oscar to beat his son? On the other hand, would it be a distraction for Floyd Jr.?

  15. Ian Says:

Finally, the fight that I have been dying tosee will finally happen. De La Hoya and Mayweather will easily get over one million buys on PPV so that is not the question. This fight will be great because Mayweather finally has an opponent that he is willing to face that he can beat or possibly be beaten. De La Hoya does have to be quick on his feet and his endurance will be critical because Mayweather will use every tactic that he has to stay away from DLH. If DLH can set the tempo early on, this will be his fight to win. For Mayweather, he will have to do what he does best. Love him or hate him, he is one of the best. If he can tire DLH out early on and make DLH chase him and get him with hard shots throughout, this will be PBF’s fight to win. This fight in my opinion will come down to who will be better conditioned in the late rounds. Mayweather will be in great shape coming into this fight and DLH will have to be the same, plus the ring rust that DLH has may come into play but I see this fight coming to a split decision not unaminous, but I will not pick a winner. I will wait to see this huge fight.

  16. bulldog Says:

    BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!
Runaway vs over the hill de la hoya,,,runaway will dance to a points victory only taking this fight believing it cements a legacy…..not.
ODH would have beaten PBF 3/4 years ago,not now and everyone knows it including PBF,,when is he gonna have a proper fight which shows his true metal, until then he will not secure any lasting legacy.

  17. jkid Says:

First off, Margarito is not that good. He never fought any one in his life. Why do people think margariot can be compeitive aganist mayweather.
Margarito don’t use his jab therefore it negates his height. He is the type that is willing to take 3 punches in order to land one. You think he can land on mayweather.

Paul Willaims is very intrestin however he is not ready for ppv.

De la hoya is not what he use to be but he dones have the combination of size, speed, boxing abilty and intellegence.

Mayweather is faster and stronger then what people give him credit for. He can change his style depending on the fighter. He pop shot baldimir. Combo the hell out of gatti, beat mitchell with a body shoot, an out thought Juddah.

I think mayweather needs to work de la hoya body for the first 4 rounds and then attack him in the latter rounds.

De la hoya need to put non stop pressure and hope he can’t hit the lotto.
Mayweather will win by the 10ht on a kn or tko

By the way mayweather fought castillo in both fights with one good hand.

  18. bruno Says:

the bad man was carlos, oscar is easy for floyd.
oscar is not faster than zab juda.

  19. mendoza the jew Says:

jkid,if margarito is what you say he is, floyd should have entered the welterweight division fighting margarito. saying you think this guy is big and tough and too much for me, watch me humiliate him, and you for supporting him.

but he didnt do that. he fought senior citizen sharmba mitchell. then judah coming off a loss. certainly, he could have fought margarito in that time span.

but floyd fans would say, what does it matter floyd would easily beat margarito anyways. sorry to rain on your mayweather parade, but that doesnt cut it. having the talent doesnt achieve the result. you have to prove it. and sadly floyd and his fans are completely happy to just have the talent, not the results.

so I guess hes back on the welterweight seniors tour. next, de la hoya……next stop after that, mosely…. after that, maybe pernell can make a comeback.

pathetic, the low expectations that have been set for the most talented fighter in years.

  20. eric Says:

thats says alot. i dont even have to type anything.. that pretty much says it all. a prime DLH wacks mayweather out the ring!!!!! NOT NOW…. like i said….. Floyd TKO

  22. mendoza the jew Says:

being a champion is about taking the helm, and facing challange after challenge. no one really knows i margarito can challenge floyd. on paper the styles match up wonderfully. but maybe it is a whitewash in reality. maybe its kermit cintron who’s style challenges floyd as a champion. maybe its paul williams, or someone else.

no one knows. thats why a champion gets the belt, and holds his ground. somewhere along that time, he proves his greatness. floyd hasnt done that since he weighed a buck thirty. and floyd fans are just fine with that. just having the skills is enough for them. and we wonder why the game is struggling

  23. Phillip Says:

I have the most respect for Oscar in taking this fight, but mayweather is just up to his same old tricks. Only this is his masterpiece of this setup career. He’s is definetly business smart though you’ve got to give him that.

  24. MUS Says:

id love to see oscar KO the pretty boy, and as long as Floyd doesnt run it should be pretty good, if he runs and wins a descion ill never pay to watch him again!!!

  25. east star Says:

Floyd will not fight Margarito,Cotto or Paul Williams. Why?Because nobody knows who they are. Thats why.And why don’t any one know who these boxers are?Because their not that good to begin with. What big fights have these guys been in? Williams gets hit entirely too many times to compete with Floyd.I don’t know how many times Cotto got wabbled by no name fighters in his last three bouts. And rumer has it Margarito got beat up in a sparing match by paul williams. Why the hell would Floyd be interested in these guys when he could fight the battle tested (and proven) Oscar De La Hoya for ten mill?

  26. Slick Says:

East star, you make a lot of sense. Why would PBF pass up the money he could make fighting GB to fight fighters no one really knows for less? Boxing is a risky sport where a lot of fighters have short careers so i don’t see why everyone keeps talking about PBF style of fighting “hit and don’t get hit”. Is he supposed to stand in front of an opponent and take shots and one day end up like Larry Merchant who has a hard time getting a sentence out? Last time I checked I thought it was do whatever it take to win and it was up to your opponent to prevent you from winning, not you helping your opponent to win. To some so-called boxing fans, boxing is all about slugging it out, I can go on any corner and see that, I like to see boxers with skill like PBF.

  27. MINGO Says:

PBF BETTER BRING HIS LUNCH OSCAR HAS A GOOFIE STYLE HE DOESENT LOOK LIKE FIGHTER BUT HE IS AND A VERY DANGEREST ONE PBY BY SPLIT D

  28. Anto Says:

Oscar will win this fight, the experience of Oscar will be there, Mayweather will be KO. in the late rounds, Thrust me on this one. Mayweather cannot face haevy hitting he gets scare, Don’t you noticed on Carlos, he was about to Run.

  29. Adam Says:

East Star knows the science. Why fight up and comers and/or contenders for a few hundred grand, risk losing (people do get hurt in boxing) when you can make 5-10 million dollars on pay per view fighting the biggest draw in the sport? Floyd knows the science too. Fight Margarit “who” for how little? Yeah right. Wake up so called fight fans, this is a buisness too.

  30. BoxingGuru Says:

This statement is true, “Pathetic, the low expectations that have been set for the most talented fighter in years.” To even think that PBF can KO DLH is absurd. Who did his last KO come against, an over the hill, 5ft, 35 year old man named Sharmba Mitchell? Come on now, none of the last 3 fighters he has faced at welterweight had any credible talent or chance to beat him. Give credit where credit is due! Have you ever heard of wasted talent? There is no better example than PBF! DLH’s only KO loss came from the light heavyweight champ of the world. You wanna compare resume’s? DLH did not dodge any top ranked fighters and fought the best in his class when they were in their prime, with the exception of war torn Chavez. Mosley, Vargas, Trinidad, Ruelas, Quartey, and of course one of the top three middleweight champs of all time, Hopkins! Who has PBF fought in their prime? Only one comes to mind- JL Castillo, whom he actually lost the first fight to. And if you think he lost that fight because of an injured hand, guess again. He is not the only fighter that fights with injuries! He is just really great at advertising it. If PBF wants to keep on making claims that he is the best P4P, he needs to prove it. Making excuses for not fighting Margarito, Williams, Hatton, or Cotto because they are not well known or haven’t fought anyone is not going cement his legacy in anyones mind except his own. The truth is, styles make fights! And until they step in to the ring, we will never know! DLH wins by late KO!

  31. open your eyes Says:

NOW everybody will see why pbf is the best in his class. everybody has seen dlh get beat 4 different ways and have seen pbf go up against all kinds of fighters and stlyes and win so here we have it some one who (pbf) been chaseing (dlh) for years to prove to his farther, dlh and to the world that he is the best p4p fighter. so remember this is what pbf has been working for so understand that he will be in his best shape of his life and he is takeing this fight personell.OH yea always bet on black

  32. mendoza the jew Says:

8 mil for margarito. thats not in dispute by anyone. but I guess sharmba mitchell, for less money, was a better fight to take? is that your logic floyd fans?

emmanuel steward gave mayweather a good verbal slashing during the baldomir fight, laughing, hell mocking floyds claim to greatness. but floyd fans think they know better than steward.

  33. Hans Says:

If Floyd Sr. is still in DLH corner I think this is just disgusting and wrong. Can you imagine Floyd Sr. instructing DLH how to hit his son, pathetic. Or DLH asking how to counter Jr. with a left hook? Talk about bad for the sport, doesn’t anyone have any class any more?

  34. scott mcmillan Says:

DLH to win, i hope at least, because even though he is a great boxer, PBF is not the most pleasant human being..

  35. BIG Steve Says:

Oscar , by Ko , Late rounds.

  36. Big Pete Says:

As Floyd goes up in weight, his punching power doesn’t follow him.
DHL is a natural 154, that’s how he can maintain his punching power.
watch out for DHL’s left which does as much damage as his right.
I’ll take DHL by TKO in the middle rounds.

  37. Box2winn Says:

Picture this…. Oscar has gotten rid of the source that knows the plan to beat Floyd Jr. his father Floyd Sr. Oscar is not a preasure fighter and I personally don’t think Oscar can deal with Floyd Jrs speed. Floyd Jr. is the cream of the crop People PAY ATTENTION!!!…. Everything this mans has told the media he would do he has demonstrated it.

It behoves us to pay attention to the action the man does in that ring not so much what he says. Yet like Ali in his era he does what he says he’s going to do. And when you get a fighter that has the skills and the God given gift to fight, TRUST it’s hard to beatthat type of fighter. Not to be super spiritual or regilious yet beaing REAL that man Floyd Mayweather Jr. is ANOINTED like David in the bible to FIGHT and he will be victorious come May 5th I’m willing to bet on it any one willing to match my bet and trust me and I’m not a gambling man.

SO just watch come May 5th 2007 you will see an anointed amster at work in that ring DO KNOW THIS!!…

  38. panamabox Says:

PBF by UD against an old and slow DLH.
PBF by TKO against Hatton, Cotto and Margarito.
Paul Williams by KO against PBF, DLH, Cotto and Margarito.

  39. Ulrich Says:

I’m not sure what to expect in this fight. If DLH does nothing more than just put some hurt on PBF in the early rounds, he’ll resort (and why shouldn’t he?) to the move and stick game. I think Oscar can get him in the early to middle rounds, but it’ll HAVE to happen quick or PBF’s comparative youth and stamina will assure him of a win by outpointing DLH. I’m a big DLH fan, but I fear if Oscar doesn’t jump on it fast and hard he’ll certainly lose this fight.
