Juan Manuel Marquez retains WBO interim featherweight crown

Juan Manuel MarquezFormer WBA/IBF featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez (46-3-1, 36 KOs), 33, from Mexico City, Mexico, successfully defended his interim WBO featherweight champion with a stunning 9th round KO over southpaw Jimrex Jaca (27-3-1, 12 KOs), 23, from the Philippines, at the Dodge Arena in Hidalgo, Texas, Saturday night.

Jaca (real name Jemuel Divino), wearing red, white and blue and fighting out of the blue corner, put up a good fight and gave Marquez, wearing red, white and green trunks, more than he bargained for. Marquez suffered a cut over the right eye from an accidental headbutt in round five which, while making for a bloody fight, failed to get him off his game.

A multi-punch combination followed by a left hook dropped Jaca for the count at 2:48 of round number nine. At the time of the stoppage, the judges had Marquez ahead 80-72 on all three cards.

I am a big fan of The Ring rankings. That’s why I’d rather see a Marquez in a rematch with Chris John than in a rematch with Pac-Man. That bout would crown the winner as the true featherweight champion, according to The Ring’s championship policy. For the same reason, I want Pac-Man to fight Barrera at junior lightweight to establish a champion in that division, too.

Juan Manuel seems to get hit alot more since the Pacquaio fight. Let me say I wasn’t too impressed with Juan Manuels victory over Jaca.

jaca is just 30% of pacman’s skills (power, speed, aggression and experience) and I know that with proper guidance he will improve tremendously in two years. Based on his performance, marquez has a lot of catching up in order to be in the ring with pacman otherwise he doesnt have any chance.

  4. G-Pal Says:

Marquez seems to have slipped a bit since he held Pacman to a draw and Barrera seems to have lost some of his thirst for battle. Maybe they should fight each other with the winner to face Pacman. In the meantime, maybe Manny could fight Joan Guzman.

JMM vs Pacman will definitely be a great showdown! It’s Pacquiao’s unfinished business. JMM will come out with his best but Pacquiao will not make the same mistake as he did last time by just going for the one punch knockout with the left. He will wear him out with his stamina and power.

  6. Paulie Says:

JMM is one of the most underrated fighters in the world.

  7. David Payne Says:

Surely its Harrison v JMM next? Providing the Scot beats Cooky.

  8. The Shadow Says:

I think Golden Boy Promotions is making a mistake with Marquez. I was not impressed “at all”.

Are you high? Marquez drew against Pacquio and you can argue that he won that based on the fact that he took every round expect the 1st, which was a 10-6 round. You can also argue that he beat Norwood and John as well. Who else has even come close to beating him?

We all know him as a slick counter puncher but he still managed to stop 35 of his 50 opponants-that’s 70% if you havent checked. Against Jaca, he won almost every round with a gash in his head that looked like the grand canyon-blood gushing all over the place. He was asked if he wanted to quit and said no. He would have won there because we won pretty much every round up until that point. Then he landed that crushing left hook that stopped Jaca. Jace was tough, quick, and game. He fought Marquez like lion and had to overcome a good amount of adversity in that fight. You try fighting with your head bashed open and blood oozing into your eyes and see if you can remain focused against a whirlwind like Jaca.

Marquez has a good chance to beat Pacquio and even better one to beat Barrera like he stole something.

JMM is not ashame of his self , winning such a fight that people never been impressed and here he came asking for another one.

JMM rematch against pacquiao is not interesting anymore. The way Manny Pacquiao figth nowadays I believed he is too much for JMM, and also dangerous for Barrera. Boxing fans like us wants a better opponent for Pacquiao that can thrill us every single round. Maybe Pacquiao against Edwin Valero or Joan Guzman, whoever comes first with both good boxing records, is more interesting than anybody else.

  12. Batchoy Says:

JMM proved to be the more cunning fighter during his first bout with the Pacman. No question about that. Had the Pacman not knocked him down thrice in the first round, JMM could have won by a unanimous decision.

The tremendous improvement of the Pacman, however, may just be too much for JMM this time. This has been shown in his last two fights against El Terrible who may just have to kiss boxing goodbye after suffering unimaginable punishment in the hands of the former.

JMM is good, no doubt. But the Pacman is now a complete fighter par excellance. Names have cropped up as probable worthy opponents. Guzman, Valero and of course, Barrera. Honestly, none of these are in the league of the Pacman right now. These three are inferior fighters compared to the Pacman. The same fate as El Terrible’s is what’s in store for them if they insist on their bad luck. Barrera had his share of humiliating defeat courtesy of the Pacman. If ever a rematch between them is in the offing, for Barrera it’s simply all about the money. Victory? It’s out of sight for him. It’s impossible.

The Pacman may take on JMM only for the purpose of helping him make money too before he retires for good after kissing the canvass, and eventually, boxing goodbye. Guzman and Valero? Well, they just want a fifteen-minute share of fame with the Pacman. After which, they’ll quickly disappear, hardly remembered, like bubbles blown off by the wind.

Pacman wears the crown. It’s his reign. We just have to bow to the king.

    Long live His Highness!
