Axel Schulz says auf wiedersehen to boxing

We could have told you it was a bad idea.

Wait, we did tell you.

Axel SchulzAxel Schulz, absent from the ring since he was TKO’d by Wlad Klitschko in 1999, gave it another go on Saturday night, and it didn’t go all that well.

Schulz, who had three opps to snag the IBF heavy belt in the mid 90s, looked nothing like the man who gave George Foreman all he could handle in 1995, against Brian Minto.

The Pennsylvania heavyweight, now sporting a 26-1 record, brought the action to Schulz in Germany, and finished the comeback of the German heavyweight via TKO in round six of a scheduled tenner.

Schulz, age 38, told fight fans that he will step away from the savage science for good after this outing: “This was definitely the end for me … I overestimated myself.”

He leaves the sport with a 26-5-1 mark.

It says a lot for heavyweight boxing when Sanders, Shulz, Botha etc - all second tier from elite guys garner so much attention at this fossilised stage.

If he hadn’t left such a large gap between this fight and the one prior to that he would have had a much better chance. And if he’d carried on going he may have been able to clinch the title in a rematch. But it was up to him and everything looks ideal in retrospect. Oh well.

It was absolutely disastrous what Axel performed on Nov 27.06 and totally embarrassing not only for him.
    Horrible!!!
