Today in Boxing History: Bobby Chacon born in California

Bobby ChaconOn this day in 1951, former featherweight and super featherweight titlist Bobby Chacon was born in Sylmar, California.

Chacon won the WBC Featherweight title with a ninth-round knockout of Alfredo Mercano in 1974. He lost it nine months later when Ruben Olivares stopped him in the second round.

The next seven years were in exercise in perseverance for Chacon. Twice, he challenged unsuccessfully for the WBC Super Featherweight title, including a seventh-round knockout at the hands of Alexis Arguello in 1979. Finally, Chacon won the belt in December of 1982, with a 15-round decision over Rafael Limon. He successfully defended it once, winning a decision against Cornelius Boza Edwards.

Chacon challenged Ray Mancini for his WBA Lightweight title in 1984, but lost by a third-round TKO. He continued fighting until 1988 but never challenged for another championship. In 2005, Chacon was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Chacon won a lot of tough matches on sheer guts & determination. His skill level was never all that much, but he was very exciting to watch when he got in the ring - no question about it.
