Winky Wright Manhandles Quartey

The bigger, stronger, younger Ronald “Winky” Wright (51-3-1, 25 KOs) had the homecoming everyone at the St. Pete Times Forum expected Saturday night by totally dominating the smaller, weaker, older Ike “Bazooka” Quartey (37-4-1, 31 KOs), in a fight broadcast by HBO.
The former welterweight champion Quartey, 37, wearing red, green and yellow trunks, ate right jabs all night long, and looked light years away from the fighter who stood so tall in the welterweight division in the mid-1990s. On this night, Ike threw 642 punches over the 12 round bout, landing 174 of them for a 35% connect total. Winky, 35, in light blue trunks, fought as only Winky fights, with a tight defense, perfect concentration and that baffling southpaw stance, and fired off 1001 punches, of which 269 landed for a 38% connect total.
The victorious Wright was credited with two knockdowns in the bout, both of which were questionable, much like the referee in the fight, Frank Santore Jr., the official responsible for the specious calls. The three judges sitting ringside scored the bout 117-110, 117-110 and 117-109, all for Winky Wright.
After the fight, when asked about his increased offensive output against Quartey, Wright said, “I was trying to close the show. Ike’s a tough fighter. He’s tough as nails. He’s got a great chin. Hey, he’s durable. But I wanted to do much standing and delivering to show the crowd that I can punch.� Winky then said that Quartey is a “Great friend, great guy. I didn’t want to hurt him bad.�
Wright did say that he’d next like to the fight the winner of De La Hoya/Mayweather, who he said he hopes, but doesn’t necessarily assume, will be De La Hoya. “I want the winner of my co-promoter and Floyd Mayweather. Oscar is the only great champion I’ve not fought.”
In televised undercard action, former IBF super middleweight champion Jeff “Left Hook� Lacy (22-1, 17 KOs), in his first fight back since his brutal, one-sided defeat at the hands of Joe Calzaghe in March, barely squeaked out a 10 round majority decision over Ukrainian Vitali Tsypko (19-2, 10 KOs). In a fight where Lacy was expected to come out like gangbusters and make a big statement, he controlled the action early, but Tsypko came on enough in the second half and did enough to have maybe have won the bout. But the judges scored it 95-95 and 96-94 twice for Lacy.
Larry Merchant, summing up Lacy’s below par performance Saturday night, said, “Lacy was rated a little higher in the echelon than he belonged, but once he went up against a marquee fighter,� that is Joe Calzaghe, “we saw where he stands.�

Does anyone really think that if PBF wins, he will fight Winky? If so, no way it is at 160 lbs. PBF will be way too outsized.

Pbf will beat Oscar and winky, Winky will be a harder fight for him the only thing Oscar has left is a chin and a name, Noone expects floyd to knock out him out anyway. Both of them cant knock Floyd out but winky can box with him I just think the speed will be to much.

If it happens at 160 pbf will fall like quartey..At 160 you loose alot of speed especially when you started at 130 so mayweather doesnt have a chance againt winky..Winky should fight miranda for a vacant belt once taylor moves up in wegiht instead of fighting for no belts

HBO is deystroying boxing WITH THEIR HOMEFIGHTER BULL****.THEY SIGN FIGHTERS TO THESE 3 FIGHT CONTRACTS WITH PPV BEING THEIR WAY OF MAKING THEIR MONEY BACK .If the fighter loses, ppv’s numbers are weaker or sometimes impossible,So HBO DOESN’T LET THEM LOSE and BOXING is looked upon as slightly more credible than the WWF.Meanwhile SHOWTIME buys the fights instead of the fighters and puts on great HONEST fights.Thank god for SHOWTIME IN COMPARISON HBO is a corrupt disgrace to boxing.Another person who I lost all respect for is BERNARD HOPKINS he went from fighting the establishment to sellin out which is one step away from bending over to the estableshment.Considering how they robbed you BERNARD,you now work with them and rob others SAD,VERY SAD.

Winky is a boring fighter. Then again Winky is a very good fighter. Winky holds his own against the best of them still waiting for a knockout. I’d like to see Winky the finisher.

The Wright-Quartey fight had the result everyone expected. If Quartey had won it would have been a major upset. Lacey needs to spend more time on his boxing skills and less time in the weight room (I love weights but this is boxing). Hopkins is just acting like a fool. Fight the best fighters in and around your division and stop grandstanding.

Winky still didn’t call for a rematch with Taylor and that’s where the unfinished business is. He wants to keep beating up all these overgrown welterweights(DLH, Quartey, Mosley, & PBF???) instead of getting back in there with THE MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION, JERMAIN TAYLOR.

No doubt about it, Winky is the king. I would like to see him fight Hopkins again; however, I do not think it is going to happen because Jermiane is going move up most likely. I believe that Oscar is going to hang it up after Floyd and Floyd is way too samll to handle Winky. So where would be the money fight for him?

First of all Winky . has no fan base , he has on charisma,
no style (A real man. would have stayed in the ring when the draw was announce with Taylor ,instead of running out of the ring like a pussy.) The people that we want to put
our money down on. .to see on PPV .do not have to be the
most Talented .Look at Gatti he had heart, guts and class.
Winky take the 60/40 split with Talyor (who is undefeated .
2 wins over Hopkins . and a 2000 Olympian .with the hold
state of Arkansas behind him ) And this time if its a Draw
stay in the ring .be a man show some class ,Stop being a crybaby. And then maybe . I will want to pay to see ,this Winky Wright.

Brilliant boxing by Winky,i hope he fights Calzaghe somewhere in the mix of things to come, Winky is the only man who can bring the best out in Calzaghe because he can match him for skills and defence, respect tp Gpal for your view but i dont believe much is to be gained by Taylor other than to lose his title against either man, Winky didnt push himself enough against Taylor yet Taylor fought is heart out, the fight was Winkys for the taking,id hope he doesnt give as little if they fight again.Calzaghe would fight very similarly to Winky,maybe more head to head but again Taylor has heart but not the skills to overcome as champ.

Calzaghe & Winky should be the next fight for Wright. De La Hoya is not going to fight Winky. PBF is definately not going to fight Winky. No big name cat’s are going to fight Winky except a Joe Calzaghe. Either that or move up like Taylor will do and make him fight you again for a rematch. Otherwise I’d try to get inb the game like Mosely,Hopkins and De La Hoya & Promote. Really besides a rematch with Taylor & a fight with Calzaghe to show these brits just what kind of champion they have been boasting about all these years. Wright doesnt have anybody else to fight!
