Margarito/Williams In Pipeline

By Robert Ecksel December 4th, 2006

Antonio Margarito/Paul Williams penciled in for next year?

Antonio MargaritoWBO welterweight champion Antonio Margarito (34-4, 24 KOs), fresh off his victory over hardcore Ghanaian Joshua Clottey at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City Saturday night, says he’s ready to takes on all comers in the division, but would especially like to get it on with undefeated mandatory Paul “The Punisher” Williams (32-0, 24 KOs). “If he’s the number one ranked contender,â€? Margarito said, “then I have to fight him next.”

Williams, who has been itching for a title fight and is as deserving as any welterweight without a belt out there, replied, “I don’t need him to tell me I’m next. I couldn’t be any happier being the WBO mandatory and I am in the gym getting ready to put my punishment on him. He likes to fight and everyone knows that I’m all action in the ring,” which should make for a thrilling bout if Margarito/Williams does finally takes place.

Williams’ manager/trainer George Peterson is convinced his man has what it takes to take down Margarito: “That’s a fight that Paul wants and he has been wanting for the longest time. Paul says, ‘Look, I want to be the best. Some say Margarito’s the best welterweight out there, so I want to beat him. I want to punish him.’”

“Boxing fans know that when I come in that ring I give 110% with my fists blazing,” insisted Williams. “I’m going to dish out the punishment to Margarito for sure and do it in my nonstop punching fashion.”

It look like the welterweight division, already the hottest division in boxing, is really starting to heat up.

    Take note PBF!!!!
Margarito wont shy from a good fight, nor will Williams,, if either fighter wanted the easy routes they would be knocking on your door.
Margarito,Cotto,Williams,,,,,,,,,,who needs PBF? None of them mentioned thats for sure, the sooner PBF retires the better!

  2. Paulie Says:

If this is the truth, then ABOUT FRIKKIN TIME!!!!

This fight will ultimately determine who will kick Floyd’s ass.

  3. garrubal Says:

Neither fighter has great defense. It should make for an explosive fight. I think Williams is a little green at the this time, so I favor Margarito on this one.

Margarito injured one of his wrists in his fight vs. Clottey, so that’ll put him out of action for a little while. Maybe March-April ‘07 is a realistic timeframe for Margarito-Williams to take place.

  4. G-Pal Says:

A champion fighting a mandatory and possibly setting up a unification, that’s quite a concept. I agree with you Bulldog and Paulie. PBF needs to take note. I’m not quite sure either Margarito or Williams would beat PBF, but real fighters take on the best possible challengers out there, not this pick and choose nonsense PBF has been doing in recent years.

Garrubal, I agree with you as far as Williams being a little green to face Margarito, just like Kermit Cintron was when he fought Tony. Although Tony looked very vulnerable in those early rounds against Clottey. Hopefully it was just ring rust.

And regarding Cotto, he looked like a beast at this new weight and should have little problem getting through his mandatory against Urkal.

    Then let the winners unify!!!!

  5. Bigg Says:

You all wrong, most us work for a living, why not get pay, after ten years. PBF deserved it. one thing the margrito, and cotto showed was they get hit easy, no contest for PBF.You did not hear cotto call out PBF, clottey was whipping margrito ass, until he hurt his hand. Dont tell PBF to take note 20 millions dollars, you moron is the answer, fools. Keep letting bloodsuckers and slavetraders like arum, fill your brains with nonsense, because PBF and ODH left him to control of their career. Wakeup slaves.

  6. G-Pal Says:

Hey Bigg, before you start calling people “morons” and “fools”, learn how to write a sentence.

  7. NOYB Says:

G-Pal, don’t throw stones if you live in a glass house, decorated with pink flowers. You need to go back to school and revisit the basics of English. Here is one example from your above statements: “I agree with you Bulldog and Paulie.” This should read: I agree with you, Bulldog and Paulie. Ergo, you, G-Pal, qualify for Bigg’s definition of “‘morons’ and ‘fools.’” I would also add the label homosexual conformist to your qualifications, being that you like to decorate your greenhouse with feminine paraphernalia!

  8. wayne Says:

Williams might be too green. Well if they make the fight will find out. When a fighter is described as being to green that means not enough experience. Maybe or Maybe Not. Perhaps a better interpretation is this, Can Williams fight a disciplined enough fight to beat Margarito. That means will Williams be able to fight smart. That I don’t no. As for Williams record being 32-0 or 34-0 whatever that would seem to be on paper that he has enough ring experience to face a roadblock like Margarito. It will be a great fight if they do fight. I truly
think Williams is making a mistake and should fight on his own timetable and just skip Margarito. Williams has the tools but Margarito has more discipline at this point. At 147 Williams might not be strong enough to beat Margarito.

  9. Ben Wiser Says:

I’m surprised “You all wrong, most us work for a living, why not get pay, after ten years.” Has any punctuation. I have to agree with G-Pal.

As for Margarito and Cotto taking on PBF, I believe they would both fall short. Cotto would give him a run. If Williams learns that he is tall and stays on the outside and shortens his punches, he could be a force. My gut tells me that he has a chin issue waiting him down the road though.

  10. staxbrix Says:

Its both ways if you go out and fight 25 fights, then have all wars your not going to last to 40 fights. Thats how bhop,Wright,Pbf,Collazage, jones jr. all did thats why there still competing at there age, on the other hand I have alot of respect for Gatti,Ward,Toney,

  11. staxbrix Says:

Barrera,Corrales, but some of them cut there carears short because they were willing to fight all. Gatti is the perfect example he could have pulled that bull and never fought anyone that could box but he fought boxers and sluggers even tho they outclass him, Not alot of people will say Mickey Ward was one of the best when he fought contenders, champs, whoever but whats more important money & belts or respect.

  12. Bulldog Says:

    PBF Take note!!!
Bigg backs your scrawny blubbering ass,,,that should surely be enough to retire, give him a dollar outta your 20 million purses and he might bring his handbag to help you out with Cotto or Margarito,,,or Hatton if you dare back down , for a proper fight that is.On the other hand amateur dramatics seem to be your latest career step and with NOYB around as a script writer who knows he could write you into a new version of ‘The crying game’.

  13. Slick Says:

All you Margarito fans are really drinking the kool-aid, he did not look impressive at all in his fight Saturday. He only looked easy to hit if you ask me and the only reason he won was because Clottey obviously hurt his hand. If it wasn’t for that I think he was on the verge of being knocked out or being stopped. What was funny to me was the fact that he didn’t even gain confidence or started talking smack until he noticed Clottey hurt his hand. I think Williams will beat him, Cotto on the other hand was very impressive and I think he will make some noise at 147.

  14. Radam Ghafahni Says:

A bout between Williams and Margarito will be a slugger’s masterpiece. Both guys are great non-boxers. The fight will be a great brawl — much like Thomas Hearns-Marvin Haglers’ bout years ago. The winner probably be Margarito.

  15. Mr. G Says:

    G-Pal,
you are correct about Margarito winning due to Clottey’s hand getting hurt…..but Margarito has called PBF several times even on the pre-bout show during the interview. I still think that PBF will win due to his speed and defense.

On Cotto not calling him out is because he is a SMART young man. He is taking his steps very carefully. He is in a weight that will work for him and even is speaking the ENGLISH for us to enjoy the interviews and make himself more marketable. Now Cotto is faster than anybody that PBF has seen and I will tell you when this guy gets it down…..PBF will be looking at the lights. Have you seen the faces of the last three guys Cotto has been against. Not very pretty. The boy can punch and has the speed/stamina that was avoiding him due to him losing so much weight.

    Time will tell!

  16. The Shadow Says:

Iwatched Margaritto fight and I’m not impressed. I saw what happens when Margaritto is confronted by a “boxer” with a little heart. I have not seen Williams fight but I know after watching Margaritto. That the way to stop him is to make him go backwards. Margaritto is also very slow and machine like. You can see his punches coming from a mile away. First fighter that fights Margaritto with speed and power knocks him out! Anybody know who that fighter might be?

  17. littleman Says:

HMM it appears that Tony wont be fighting Mr. Williams after all, he has reach an agreement to fight Cotto June of 07…Rumor has it that Williams will know fight Luis Collazo for a the VACATE wbo title.

  18. The Shadow Says:

Cotto’s a “slugger” Margaritto will hand Cotto his first defeat! Margaritto’s slow but fast enough to whoop Cotto. Cotto has a punchers chance but if he dont take Margaritto out early - it’s a rap! for Cotto.

  19. wayne Says:

Shadow, I disagree. Cotto is improved at 147. As for Margarito I agree with what most have said so far he looks very beatable. The difference being Cotto is proven and Williams isn’t so I’d give Cotto a better chance at beating Margarito than I do Williams. Cotto looked like a killer in there at 147. Cotto not only beat a big welterweight in Quintana he beat him up pretty good while doing so. Cotto has some major league power. Probably more so than anyone at 147 right now. My Opinion of course.

  20. demoneyez83 Says:

Ive been watchin cotto career movements. Seeing him at 147 was entertaining.Pretty much bullied Quintana i believe. As for margarito. Hes a great fighter but not a great boxer. I feel that Cotto can beat Margarito. As for PBF excellent boxer, he might have a harder time making Cotto look like an amateur like he has to the other fighters her has fought.

  21. BoxingGeek Says:

That dude Bigg must have went to ‘Floyd Mayweather Sr.’s English class.’ Anyone remember when PBF threw his dad out of the house? What did Floyd the Dumber say “Oscar aint throw me out no house!” So, as long as Bigg keeps talking like that, then I have no use to read his stupid and ridiculous comments. Now on to everyone elses comments, here are my thoughts. Everyone knows Floyd has not taken a risk in years. Do I believe he would beat Margarito, Cotto, Hatton, Williams, etc. Yes, he probably would but Tyson was supposed to beat Douglas & Holyfield, Kostya was supposed to beat Hatton, Barrera was supposed to beat Pacman, etc. But they didn’t win. So, that’s why you must fight to prove yourself or you will suffer the same fate as Roy Jones Jr…

  22. BoxerDC Says:

Everyone saying that Cotto was scared to call out Mayweather need to look at each and everyone of his post fight interviews. Cotto always said that he will fight who he is told to. After every fight I sit anxiously hoping he would call someone out and he always says the same thing “I will fight who they tell me to.” Cotto is not scared to call out Mayweather, he never calls anyone out, he fights who they put in front of him and he crushes them.
Floyd lost a lot of my respect with how he fights and who he fights. Get over yourself and lose the retirement garbage. The Welterweight division is splurging with talent and you want to retire. And lets cut the “fight once or twice a year garbage.” Throw these guys’ names in a hat and let them go at it.

Williams is the real deal. I would give him a slight edge over Margarito with his poor performance against Clottey. I like Antonio but the ugly missed uppercuts and the sluggish style didn’t look too good. I don’t know much about Williams’ chin but it would be a good fight.

…not really looking forward to Cinco de Mayo

  23. Phillyfighter Says:

I like Paul Williams in this fight, Margarito is a busy fighter with some power, but Williams appears to be the real deal with some power and volumes of well placed punches. I think it may be time for the young guy to take over. Williams also beats Cotto by decision, to much height.

  24. andy from newcastle Says:

PBF is fast hands fast mouth, flash a la Hamed (Gladiator for goodness sake!), but he is good, we all agree on that. Williams looks one for the future, merciless last time out too, like that. Margarito, heard a lot, read a lot, saw him for the first time on Saturday. Great fight but didn’t really impress me the way I’d hoped, perhaps I just saw the wrong first fight. Cotto on the other hand I’ve been fortunate enough to follow throughout his time on HBO (why did he switch by the way, he was Larry’s golden boy?). Cotto was frightening, and we know from a couple of tough outings he has a lion’s heart. For now I would put my money on him above the others. He’s certainly the most adaptable fighter since Oscar, very intelligent and can switch game plans readily. As for poor Mr.Biggs, he may be E2L you know. Let’s see the rest of you write your next comment in Spanish and get the spelling and grammar correct. Of course the “poor picnie head may just be too tough take book”. Respect.
