De La Hoya/Mayweather At MGM

MGM Grand Garden Arena to host May 5 superfight

Oscar De La HoyaOn Saturday, May 5, the biggest fight to hit the sport in decades, and maybe the richest fight in history, between six-division world champion Oscar De La Hoya and unbeaten four-division world champion Floyd Mayweather, will take place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“This is what boxing is all about,â€? said Golden Boy Promotions’ Oscar De La Hoya. “And fighting Floyd Mayweather is the type of fight that truly gets me motivated to go through a hard training camp and make the sacrifices I have to make to be the best. We’ve talked about it, the press and the fans have asked for it, and now we’re going to put it all on the line and fight. I can’t wait for May 5.”

Floyd Mayweather can’t wait as well. “I’m excited to get this opportunity to once again show why I’m pound-for-pound the best in the world and to add another title to my collection,â€? he said. “I respect everything Oscar has accomplished in this sport, but this time he’s in over his head.”

A 1992 Olympic gold medalist for the U.S., De La Hoya (38-4, 30 KOs) became not only a boxing champion many times over, he became a crossover sensation. The Golden Boy has faced boxing’s elite for 14 years including Julio Cesar Chavez, Bernard Hopkins, Shane Mosley, Felix Trinidad, Pernell Whitaker, Ike Quartey, Fernando Vargas, Arturo Gatti, Genaro Hernandez, Jesse James Leija and Hector Camacho. In his last fight on May 6, the 33-year-old De La Hoya destroyed two-division world champion Ricardo Mayorga in six rounds to win the WBC junior middleweight championship.

Mayweather (37-0, 24 KOs) represented the U.S. in the 1996 Olympics and was on his way to a gold medal before a controversial loss forced him to accept the bronze. Once Pretty Boy Floyd turned pro, he would not be denied and won his first world title at the age of 21 in 1998 by stopping Genaro Hernandez. He defended eight times including wins over Diego Corrales, Carlos Hernandez, and Jesus Chavez. In 2002, Mayweather added a lightweight title to his trophy case by beating Jose Luis Castillo. Junior welterweight and welterweight championships would follow when he defeated Arturo Gatti and Zab Judah, respectively. In November, the 29-year old Mayweather won yet another 147-pound title by defeating Carlos Baldomir.

Ticket prices run from $2,000 down to $350 and will be available for purchase at the MGM Grand Garden Arena box office and at all Las Vegas Ticketmaster locations. Tickets also will be available for purchase at www.mgmgrand.com or www.ticketmaster.com. The fight will also be shown on HBO PPV.

the only person in over his head is floyd. look at that archive of fighters. its ridiculous and the reason why oscar isn’t undefeated like floyd is. none of the fighters that floyd has fought can be called great or the best of the era. judah had 3 loses already and was coming off a loss when he fought floyd. baldomir was 35 and slow to begin with and got the fight for beating a lazy overconfident judah and a shot gatti. the one fighter they have in common was gatti and delahoya atleast beat him in his prime and a round sooner. on top of all that floyd is moving up in weight to 154 and oscar has floyds father who taught floyd all that he knows training him. floyd better be ready for his first ko loss and consequently better be ready to stick around for a little bit cuz he doesn’t want to go out on that note.

PBF wouldn’t fight Margarita for 8 million. Does anyone know how much he is getting for this fight?

  3. historyboy says:

I’m Not sure though, but word has it that PBF will be getting around $10 million compared to De La hoya’s $25 million and not to mention their PPV shares that is projected to hit 2 million buys.

Floyd Mayweather VS Oscar De La Hoya is a fight that I can’t wait to see. These are not just 2 big names, but genuinely excellent boxers. I have not been this excited about a fight since my eager anticipation of Mike Tyson VS Lennox Lewis, which was largely due to my misplaced belief that Tyson would turn back the clock and show what 50 per cent or higher version of a prime Tyson would do to the likes of Lennox Lewis, the result was a nightmare for me, a Tyson fan, as Lewis Dominated a boxer that was only a memento of perhaps the greatest heavyweight fighter of all time, in my opinion. Granted Oscar is a bit older now, but he is not past it by any means, and I am not using his last victory to draw that conclusion. That guy was made for him, in every single way. This fight is an intriguing one many ways, and I cannot wait for it to unfold before my awaiting gaze. I am very happy that this fight is going to happen, as a boxing fan, I am glad that for once a fight, between two big names like this is going to come off. I believe that either fighter can win, but on paper I give the edge to Mayweather, yet his chin will be tested by De La Hoya and it will be Oscar’s night if he doesn’t have one. Great fight, I can barely wait until fight night. I hope that neither fighter retires, and that Mayweather continues to fight all the other worthy fighters like Hatton, Cotto, Mosley, Margarito, and perhaps Winky Wright if he fares well against the aforementioned fighters. Good luck to both of these excellent fighters, and I hope that they ignore all critics and just fight their fight when the time comes, whether it be a fan pleasing slugfest, or a technical chess match, which any true boxing fan will appreciate.

Merry Christmas to everyone, and all the best in the coming year.

like ez da fez said, those names in floyd’s list are not good enough to say he has “beaten the best”. on the other hand oscar has defeated tuffer and better oppponents , and those oscar fans know who i’m talking about…oscar is still slick, fast, and strong same as mayweather, if oscar uses his jab as a key to the fight just like he said ..oh yeah watch out mayweather, oscar’s jab can open many opportunities to land a good shot, i hope oscar wins…i feel like he’ll win…i know he has what it takes to win!…but if floyd happens to win it will be only through a close decision or a lucky good liver shot like bernard’s but floyd cant hurt oscar …you watch…..

Okay that makes sense for PBF concerning the money. I heard he received 8 mill to fight Baldomir and if he makes 10 mill to fight Oscar which will probably be between 15 – 20 mill after the ppv share then it makes sense that he avoided Margarito from that point of view. But whoever wins, has to fight the other top guys or the others will have to fight among themselves and sort this thing out. If they do 2007 will be one of the best years for boxing in a long time. There is a lot of potential in several divisions, I just hope the matches will be made.

Here we go again with the PBF haters … First of all everybody is 4getting about Felix Sturm a no name young kid who embarrased Oscar right B4 the Hopkins fight . Then Hopkins knocked out oscar right after that … Why are yall hating on PBF so much ? He is fighting @ a weight he doesn’t even need 2 be @ . But since his skills are razor type precision , he can move up and risk it . Why should PBF fight Margarita ? Did u see his (margarita) last fight ? These guys are good , they’re hungry but Margarita and Hatton need PBF , PBF doesn’t need them … get it? U will never be satisfied , if PBF beats Hatton u will complain he didn’t knock him out or he got lucky or why can’t he fight Margarita next or bla , bla , bla . Are these guys gonna even be around 3 to 6 years . With the boxing style Margarita and Hatton have , if PBF doesn’t beat them . A slick , strong , intellegent boxer will eat these guys lunch (look @ their last fights they had a hard time with no names) … I love the ring savvy Oscar has he is a bonified hall of famer win , lose , or draw that’s why PBF is fighting him … Do yall get it yet ? Let PBF live !! Let Oscar live !! I wish both of them have a great fight *TAH*

tah borne say what u will about guys like hatton, or cotto but let me tell u this the guy that gav3e hatton such a tough fight may not have been a big name but was a champ with a good record, was talented, and a natural at the weight and hatton in his first fight at that weight challenged him. not only that it was his first fight in the states and even the great emanuel steward staid if theres anyone ought there who could give hatton a tough fight from a styles stand point it was that guy. who did floyd fight when he moved up to 147 an old sharmba mitchell whos little and not a natural at that weight anyway and had already been knocked out kosta tyu and has since been knocked out by paul williams. floyd took the easier opponent like he always does and why he stays undefeated at these weights. also u said good smart boxer with skills would eat hatton alive what do u call the all time great kosta tsyu. i would take cotto, hatton, dela hoya, Mosley, and margarito all over floyd anyday.

‘WOW ‘IM NOT BELIVING WHAT SOME OF YOU GUYS ARE WRITING. EZ DA FEZ; BOXING FAN;WE AII KNOW CHAVEZ WAS WAY PAST HIS PRIME WHEN OSCAR DECIDED TO FIGHT HIM .SHANE ISNT THAT SPECIAL. PERNELL W BEAT HIM.JESSIE JAMES WAS TO SMALL AND SHOT AND CAMACHO WHO? ITS GOING TO BE GREAT FIGHT I LIKE PBF. DONT GET ME WRONG I LIKE OSCAR TWO. BUT PBF HAS SKILLS AND WITH HIS FATHER IN THE OTHER CORNER ITS ONLY GOING TO MAKE HIM WANT IT MORE I CANT WAIT I LIVE FOR “super fights”

  10. Ruddy says:

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! P.S. as for maywether mabe one day he will fight someone that can expose HIS #1 WEEKNESS MAKE HIM FIGHT . Like ANTONIO MARGARITO ,OR COTTO OR EVEN PAUL WILLIAMS … CANT FORGET A REMATCH with Jose Luis CASTILLO something he will never do cause he’s a coward how dare he talk bad about Ali and Robinson,Marciano . ON QUITE FRANKLY he s luky he ran from Baldamire he new better than to trade with him. P.P.S.S.unifide undefeted middlewait champ prediction 2008 Meguel Cotto . Maywether vs DeLaHoya prediction delahoya KO win in th 10th round

  11. Ruddy says:

Tah Born . REMEMBER Roy Jones and Tarver ???????????/

  12. bill major says:

FLOYD IS IN OVER HIS HEAD ! WHAT NERVE HE’S GOT TO SAY OSCARS IN OVER HIS HEAD,WHO THE HECK DID HE EVER FIGHT TO MAKE HIM SO FEARED ? GIVE ME A BREAK, OSCAR IS THE GUY WHOS GOING TO MAKE IT A GOOD FIGHT OTHERWISE IT WOULD BE ANOTHER SUCKFEST LIKE FLOYDS LAST 10 EFFORTS. HES A POT SHOT EXPERT/TRACK STAR, AND THAT AINT GOING TO WORK ON OSCAR DELAHOYA.

  13. ez da fez says:

mingo “mosley isnt that special” are u crazy. mosley has atleast as much natural talent as floyd and 2 wins over oscar. i would put money on mosley knocking floyd out cuz hes got the speed to catch him easy, the power to crush him, an iron chin to eat what ever floyd hits him with, and 100x more heart. the reason why hes not undefeated is because when he moved up in weight unlike floyd he fought the really good and legitimately BIG guys like Winky who have with ridiculous arm lenght advantages because he wants to be legitimately considered great unlike floyd who kids himself. also say what say what what u will about chavez and “mosley” which are ridiculous same with witaker, but how about trinidad, hopkins, quarty, and a in his prime vargas. w/out a doubt thoughs are all the greats of his era with in 6 WEIGHTCLASSES of his weight way more impressive than a corrales, gatti, and judah. combine that with floyd senior in his corner and floyd moving up again if oscar has anything left at all theres no reason for him to not knock floyd out.

  14. Sergs Alarkon says:

I just want to say goodluck to both boxers, the scheduled fight will be the date of my birthday and it is just a good gift to see these two gladiators entertain me on the 5th day of May.

  15. wayne says:

I have a hunch Oscar will do somewhat better than other Boxers have had in the past against Floyd Mayweather Jr. The question is will it be enough with the judges. Oscar’s needs to nail Floyd really good a couple of times early to get his respect and make it to his liking. I see Floyd winning 8 rounds to 4.

  16. andrea valdez says:

hey this is andrea i wonted to know if you know a kid name jesus tellez he lives in thousand plams and he say`s that u are his uncel so yah thanx for reading i realy think u are hot..oh,and jesus he is really good at math he likes to ride his bike a lot 4 real bye thanx email me back if u wont to call jesus this is his number (760)3435870…..bye

  17. BoxinFan says:

say what Andrea? ha-haaa…anyways…first of all wayne , seriously bro other boxers that fought floyd in the past i believe are not even close to what oscar is and amingo chavez was not “past” his time he was not in his prime but not way out of it chavez i believe put a REALLY good fight against oscar on their second match in those days other than frankie randall he hadnt fought someone as fast and good as oscar so i give chavez much credit in lasting those rounds with out becoming the typical victim of oscar’s speed and left hook punches, even the commentors of HBO said it was the best chavez they seen in years, and come on we all know he beat Trinidad with nothing but boxing talent …yeah he blew it in the last rounds, now floyd fans has he fought guys like sugar, quartey, vargas, to name a few…and yeah oscar didnt do great with sturm but just like sturm wasnt able to hurt oscar having a few more advantages like strength and age…i’m CHICANO just like Oscar so i support him all the way , but hey let the best man win

  18. Wes says:

I think PBF is good BUT WE ALL KNOW THE GOLDEN BOY IS GREAT!!! With his powerful left jabs and lift hook he will hurt PBF and KNOCK IS ASSSS OUT. Oscar as fought the best and beat the best. I think with quick counter punching he will K.O. PBF. PBF has never been tested like this and its time for is ass to go down just like Tarver did Jones. I got my money on the GOLDEN BOY!!!

  19. bigtimecarl says:

kick his a@$ floyd. he ain’t got heart.

  20. jerrydegagarcia says:

oscar in th 7th round will take him down ……i garranty it !

  21. Pissedboxingfan says:

Diego Corrales, Carlos Hernandez, and Jesus Chavez. Jose Luis Castillo. Arturo Gatti and Zab Judah, Carlos Baldomir were the top fighters @ that time. Don’t get mad @ PBF because he made those guys look like nobodies(trash). He is just that good. Oscar is a great fighter one of the best who came through the boxing scene but @ this present time he is out skilled in so many ways. The only thing I question is PBF chin. His chin has never been tapped good but Oscar has the talent to tap that chin but does Oscar have the speed. He can’t hit the chin if he can’t catch it. Ask Gatti: This is one of the best fights in history. I hope their names live up to a great fight.
