Is Pacquiao The Only Nominee For Fighter of 2006?

Pushing the boxing envelope please

Manny PacquiaoManny Pacquiao, with two victories against Erik Morales, and one against Oscar Larios, is the year’s top fighter, according to USA Today’s fine fight scribe Chuck Johnson.

And for that matter, just about everyone else with some knowledge of the sport and a platform to speak from…

What about you, Blog Squad?

Is there anyone else besides Pac Man who deserves consideration as the top fighter of the year for 2006?

If Baldy had downed PBF, he would have locked down the award, but his reign as upset specialist ran its course…

“It’s been a great year,” Baldomir said. “I beat Judah; I beat Gatti; I went up against the pound-for-pound king. I accomplished a lot.”

Damn right…

So, if you have any other nominations, please, fire away.

Maybe some miniweight guys that we’re overlooking, because we’re somewhat fixated on size in this region…

And while we’re at it, feel free to nominate fighters for other prizes…who’s your comeback fighter of the year? I’m going with Shannon Briggs, the poster boy for asthmatics the world over who KOd Sergei Liakhovich and finally secured himself a title strap, long after everyone thought he was an overweight, underdisciplined bust….

Biggest disappointment? Is there anyone else but Jeff Lacy?

He got schooled by Joe Calzaghe, and the 29-year-old Floridian was life and death with Vitali Tsypko. It is not impossible that we’ve seen the last of Lacy as a pro, as he’s struggled mightily with motivation and disappointment in 2006….

Bring it on Blog Squad.

We’re almost into 2007, with a fresh calendar full of shock and awe that the Savage Science always doles out, so let’s give 2006 the proper due it deserves…

Pacquiao just gave the boxing world winning performances in an image
of a true sportsman – played the sport cleanly, honorably and full of
passion. He showed the world how to be the greatest among the greats
by performing excellently, cleanly, fairly and friendly – a true ambassador
of goodwill of his country – the Philippines.

MANNY PACQUIAO is my FIGHTER OF THE YEAR!

  3. 2Pac says:

You should not be questioning this. If you are a neutral boxing fan, you have to say Pacman is the fighter of the year!!!!!!

For somebody in this blog to suggest that people here don’t know about boxing, hold on son, they know boxing before you were even born.if the art of boxing is about hitting and not get hit, that’s fine and dandy. That’s boxing
101.But there’s also commercialized boxing 101 where you have to perform and entertain the paying public(in millions) from their hard earned money just to watch two gladiators duke it out in the ring.PBF underperformed in his fight with Baldomir. He performed only 90%.Proof:He got booed, people left early,Barkley and Woods exited prematurely.I deserve a $10.00 refund from the $50.00 i shelled out for non 100% performance. That’s your commercialized boxing 101 lesson. Can you guarantee a refund?
So why would i consider PBF as fighter of the year,if he can’t even guarantee my satisfaction? I sweat for that money, homey!! that’s also Accounting 101.
We ought to throw Pacquiao coins after his every fight because he whet our appetite for boxing. And that’s common sense101 lesson ,too.
Without blinking an eye,’Pacquiao is the fighter of the year”

  12. Edron4ever says:

Being a Pinoy, of course Pacman deserves my adulation for being the BFY & P4P King. As what my fellow Filipino sez, Pacman is not American or White that’s why he cannot be P4P King, that’s one great discrimination to all of us Pinoy, whenever we go, we r discriminated bcoz we are Pinoy, no matter how gud we R!!! At least with PACMAN, we r very proud to be Filipino, and we r the best, whenever, wherever, we like PACMAN is the best breed Filipino ever.

  13. doroperu says:

a fighter of the year is not only rated thru his won fights but the most important: his heart, no fear attitude to his opponents and most of all the respect & love of god and thats manny for sure.

  14. TONz rHEMA says:

No Wonder PacMan is the Greatest Champion in this ERA, he has an excitement in every punch he pursue in his oponent . . . . it is not possible HE will be the new Fighter of the Year co’z he deserve it ….. and i think he can fight for another weight in may be in lightweight and i think he can supreme.

  15. Knock knock says:

To all Pretty Fraud Boys!!! You’re all daydreaming…i can’t believe you were able to finished watching the fights of Gayweather when all the fans watching have all gone to sleep. Tsk, tsk…so you are all for the boring fights, the kind you like watching. Me, i love fast paced, non stop action, high adrenalin fighting that leaves me up on my feet..and that’s what Pacman’s bring to the table..and for that he deserves to be the fighter of the year…

  16. Meyni Pekyew says:

gerry penalosa – comeback fighter of the year!!!

  17. audubonian says:

What makes every Pacquiao fight truly exciting is not the fact that he is a gladiator, but that he himself is susceptible to being knocked out. And he has been twice already. Manny took the biggest punches from Morales – even in the last fight. Morales hit him with a left-right combo in the third round that would have stopped most fighters. Larios almost knocked him out in the third round with a left hook that Pac didn’t see coming. You all saw Marquez’s right hand that almost beheaded Manny. Barrera got to him a couple of times. You watch Pacquiao fights excited and nervous at the same time.

Mayweather on the other hand will not risk it all. Sure he’s a great boxer and will probably beat anyone in front of him, but he will never put on a daring and exciting show as Pacquiao does in every fight. The proof? The year 2006.

  18. cody says:

Why not Jermain Taylor? He’s the only one who came out of the Olympics that has actually held a title belt!!

  19. cody says:

Floyd Mayweather Jr. should be fighter of the year simply because of the fact the fights he tried to pursue but was denied like Sugar Shane Mosley, Ricky “wimp” Hatton. He defeated Zab Judah, and Gatti, and is still undeafted and is in the prossess of taking on De LaHoya.

  20. boricua says:

Ivan Calderon or Hugo Cazares..They won on 2006 against true contenders and not aging boxers like Pacquiao did…..

  21. Hertz says:

    PACMAN is the man!!!

  22. Pretty Fraud Gayweather says:

    Manny Pacquiao. End of Conversation.

  23. mariojalcantara says:

The only truth is PACMAN for the year 2006!!!!!

  24. dinodino says:

    PACMAN deserves it.

    ABSOLOTLY an DIPINITLY!

TO all the people ob da pilipins. tank you for the soport and praying to the god almighty.

  25. Cayote13 says:

Manny Pacquiao!!!! Simply the best. not afraid to slug it out. can the same be said of PBF? i am afraid not. i think PBF is a faggot…..

  26. pacman says:

ABSOLOTLY its me. PAC MAN: “mexican boxers? Line ‘em up! i’ll fight ‘em all”

  27. sergs alarkon says:

Manny Pacquiao is the best pound for pound boxer TODAY. No one can beat him in his weight class, truly a nice guy that is why filipinos loved him. So to all Mexican BOXERS eat your hearts out and make way for the PACMAN!!!!! Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!!!

  28. dodod says:

pacman is the exact missing word for fighter of the year 2006

  29. rick says:

manny destroyer pacquio is the man in boxing.he knock out the king of mexicans boxer , eric morales and antonio barrera…..what else do we need………and besides that the man have a good heart he always thanks the god almighty and thanks the fans ……his worth watching fight.

  30. Guy Fox says:

Definitely Manny Pacquiao for not only Fighter of the Year but also for undisputed Pound-For-Pound King. Had Pacquiao not been in the ring this year, the UFC and other forms of MMA would’ve taken an even bigger bite out of the shrinking boxing pie. I really do not like Pretty Boy Floyd. He combines a boring boxing style with an ego the size of Siberia. Speaking of which, I don’t think I’m alone in weeping over the state of the heavyweight division. Too bad Vitali Klitschko’s retired due to injury. Wladimir is good, but he’s not his big brother, and he’s the closest thing the heavyweights have to a king. To abuse the analogy even further, he’s no boxing king. If Pacquiao is a king, Wladimir Klitschko is little more than a life baron.

  31. Manny P. says:

Salamat po sa suporta nyong lahat. God bless and happy holidays

  32. rudy says:

I like the pick of Penalosa as Comeback Fighter..nice one there – why do people say PacMan wont win because he is american? that kind of bothers me there – Im 100% Mexican, born in CA, and ive always rooted for my fellow warriors in the ring, and yes have they been defeated by a even greater warrior than them(still has a score to settle w/Marquez) and if Pac doesnt get the FOY award for being Filipino or non american descent, that would be a disgrace to the sport – but very very hard to see that happen, I would boxing is not that putrid and corrupted to have something like this happen – and good luck to Manny in settling this promotional contract BS, hope to see him in the ring next spring/summer!! at least we get the treat of a possible Marquez VS Barrera fight in March – that would be nice, followed by the winner to face Pacman!!! cant wait should be another great year in this division

  33. BOBBY GAB MAURE says:

MIGUEL COTTO IS BOXING OF THE YEAR BY A LANDSLIDE.

  34. galluswolf says:

its definitely PACMAN…no arguments please. Barrera will loose to Pac by knockout…Pac can also beat PBF..”bring it on”

  35. ferro says:

pac deserves it. Why? Because even if pretty boy floyd were to fight and wins against morales, he probably wins by avoiding slugging with el terrible.
and if he did slug and win, he probably won’t knock morales out.
pretty boy may well be the best punch-dodger in the world, so his chin is still suspect. Also, pretty boy fights so carefully just to ensure himself a win, making his fights boring, whereas pac and morales care not about losing and go straight for the knockout even with such dangerous adversaries as each other, barrera, and junior jones—risking it all.
morales is certainly one of the best counterpunchers in boxing history, and certainly has one of the strongest chins.
nobody could knock el terrible out, let alone knock him down.
bigger guys like raheem and junior jones couldn’t do it.
the hall-of-famer in barrera couldnt do it.

pac, with a deficiency in height and reach did it BIG time, and twice at that.
when i saw morales getting stopped the first time i thought it was a fluke.
but when i saw him getting stopped the 2nd time, i felt sad, demoralized, and felt like it’s the end of the world.

heck, even with morales losing by stoppage twice, i’d still say he’s a close second to pac as fighter of the year
