Pac Man Out, Barrera To Meet Marquez?

By Michael Woods December 26th, 2006

In and out, up and down with Manny Pacquiao

Manny PacquiaoMost of us thought Manny Pacquiao would hook up again with WBC super featherweight champion Marco Antonio Barrera, but Golden Boy Promotions is saying that Barrera will fight WBO champion Juan Manuel Marquez on March 17, 2007.

Golden Boy, according to ABS-CBN, said the Barrera/Marquez fight is almost a certainty, and would take place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The WBC was supposed to have a purse bid for Pacquiao (their international super feather champ) and Barrera, but Pacquiao’s murky contract status has muddied the mix.

Is the 28-year-old southpaw with Bob Arum?

Has he signed on with Golden Boy?

It remains to be seen…

Some background: in September, Pacquiao signed a seven-fight contract with Golden Boy Promotions….

Done deal, right?

Nope.

Shortly after, Bob Arum announced the Filipino had signed a four-year deal with Top Rank.

Golden Boy thinks they have a hold on Pacquiao, and want to hold Pac Man/Barrera II in September.

The right to promote Pacquiao, now one of the top four draws in the sport, will likely fall to the judicial system.

Pacquiao’s been a busy beaver regarding the status of who promotes him, having jumped from Murad Muhammad, to Gary Shaw, to Arum, and now, possibly, to Oscar De La Hoya, in the span of four years…

Pac Man’s trainer, Freddie Roach, was reported as saying that Don King had entered the mix, and was trying to woo the Filipino into the fold, but King sent out a press release denying a courtship on Dec. 23rd…

Do stay tuned, as the wranglings involving the all-action Filipino are bound to get dirtier.

There is, after, mucho money at stake…

  1. Paulie Says:

Unless this legal crap is done, I don’t think Pac will be fighting for a year.

  2. G-Pal Says:

You’re probably right Paulie, which is a shame (not that you’re right, but that Pacman won’t be fighting.)

In the meantime, I’ll take a MA Barrera vs JM Marquez in March. Also, with Manny out of action for a while, the other champions in the division like Guzman and Valero can make more of a name for themselves and create more interest for fights with Manny. Throw Rocky Juarez in the mix at 130 and that makes some interesting fights while we wait for Manny to get his mess cleared up.

  3. dongskie Says:

if this is only a bluff or not, it will be not good for de la hoya!!!!

  4. Sodamn Insane Says:

GBP is willing to take a lost by pairing up MAB vs JMM which
won’t be making any top dollar and most likely to be as boaring as MAB vs Rocky Juarez . The reason”s behind GBP
making this announcement is they want to put preasure on
the Pacman to make a decission. But Pacman is not answering any call. Also maybe they feel their chances on winning the case in court against TR is dwindling. Just look
how much more money GB would have made in the MAB vs
MP 2 and JMM vs MP 2 . I guess GB is not that greedy after
all . What will happen if MAB losses to JMM will their be a rematch clause .

  5. Layman Says:

    Money talks.

I honestly don’t think this will go to court. This will be settled out of court for simple reasons. Boxing tends to lose a lot of money if Manny will not be able to fight. Both promoters will lose money. HBO will lose money. Las Vegas will lose money. Online gambling will lose money. And you know how this people hates to lose money. Dela Hoya is just baiting (and is hoping that Manny will take the bait). Too bad for them I dont think Manny is stupid enough. Manny will think this one through. He’s got the ace. ODLH has got nothing (but bluff). Looks like, this is developing into an exciting poker match.

  6. Kevin Says:

this actually should work out best for boxing fans. JMM v MAB is a great fight and one that probably wouldn’t have happened without this PacMan mess. Both guys are getting up there in years, and this should be a great matchup between veteran Mexican fighters. Let’s save Pac’s next fight for the winner of these two greats.

  7. tony Says:

Pacman would not have multiple contracts signed unless there’s a somebody that made him do it. He would not have done it on his own. So whoever is responsible for putting the Pac into this mess should be roasted. I smell a leech.

  8. Duljoman Says:

GBP is trying to pusue MAB vs. JMM… but the truth is they’re just trying pressure Manny on joining their team… plus they’re trying put those numbers $$$ on the news to make Manny think about the money… if Manny bites thats good for Manny, if Manny go for TR it’s also good for him… so its a win2x situation for him… and MAB vs. JMM can fight but not much interesting… not a payperview material… two mexican fighter running on the ring no actions… if these guys put a good fight then the winner is deserving to fight MP… Manny can wait… and have a good time…

  9. pacman_the_cute Says:

pacman will eat Arum, golden man, barrero, joey marquez and all. PACMAN is the man!!!!!

  10. jasonpogi2005 Says:

this will be a great fight if mab vs jmm materialize.bring manny pacquiao vs joan guzman fight because this joan guzman ducks manny a lot. i am sure joan guzman eat his words to our pacman! peace brother!

  11. Rommel Says:

BARRERA vs PACMONSTER cancelled good for barrera at least his retirement will cancelled too. LOL

  12. jc Says:

I think both MAB and JMM is afraid to figth PACMAN, so to prevent a devastating retirement of their career, they playing a hide and seek game over PACMAN…

  13. roger turda Says:

i agree with those comments, manny has the ace to deal.so,lets him think the best way he could be,im appreciating the mess that this advicers done to manny…shame on you guys…you never care of your country men …i hope that manny will kick your ass soon as this prob is done….

  14. MARLON Says:

on the signing of the contract who should be blame is it MP, trainer, managers, friends or the stupid MP lawyer who’s job is to make sure to read and discuss to MP all the advantages and disadvantages before he signs the contract and this legal battle should been avoided.

  15. Sammy U. Says:

My idol will retire……… you just don’t no it.

  16. ivan_s Says:

the age factor for MAB and JMM is evident and with MP getting top honors this year, MP is looked upon as the best fighter in his division. belt or no belt, GBP or TR, court decision or settlement, fact is MP is still the best because he has the heart of a true champion. MP will be there for quite some time while MAB and JMM are heading for the exit. MP will earn his pay either way. as the best and most marketable boxer in the sport, everyone will be looking to make a date with MP. Guzman, Valero, Juarez, and all other hopefuls MAB & JMM included, just make sure you’re ready to feel the Pacman’s explosive power.

  17. Alvaro O. Napoles Says:

Truly, the MAB v.s. JMM is definitely not a pay per view caliber. Maybe GBP has so much dollar to be given away hence, the plan to promote said fight. But, GBP has still enough time to think it over before throwing away good money. I honestly think GBP is trying to cleverly manuever so that, MP will come out and declare to fight MAB. I’M PRETTY SURE IT WILL NOT HAPPEN. MP is greater than anyone of them or both combined! Talent wise? Not one is worthy! Everybody knows that, at this point in time not even MAB or JMM can beat MP? WHAT THEY WILL BE THINKING IS HOW MUCH DOLLAR THEY CAN EARN IF GIVEN A CHANCE TO FIGHT MP? THAT’S ALL!

  18. Mark Smith Says:

if barrera will fight marquez instead of pacquaio its golden boy promotions loss. most of the boxing fans all over the world wants to see pacquiao and barrera this year 2007. pacman and mab will make more money.

  19. adam "cute" arias Says:

Pacman is the most spectacular entertainer in the boxing world right now and no one can beat him in his weight class division that is very evident on his last match against morales. But I am begining to worry about the implication of his promotional squabble. If this will not be resolve as soon as possible it will not only be a great loss for the filipino people but also for the boxing world. I hope that no one will take advantage of the situation by demolishing the career of Pacman by not booking him for a fight for a long period of time. Remember Arum loves mexican fighter and Dela hoya is a mexican, no mexican boxer can beat pacman in the ring right now so it is not impossible for the two promoter to slowly pull out pacman out of the limelight.

  20. Fever1673 Says:

let all the champs fight, line them up all, im sure whoever wins and survive will be cleared by pacman…

  21. LUVISMIN Says:

We must be wait what is the result of the court final judgement, my understanding untill this very moment is not yet finalize the final outcome of the case. We are barking about the fight accoding to most honorable WBC pres. JS previously announce to the boxingworld that the winner of the grand finale is the mandatory to challenge MAB. So, PacMan is the real challenger to fight the champ. Check me if i’m wrong pls.

  22. iriga city boy Says:

Some boxing writer labeled Pacquiao as the “Paris Hilton” of boxing. With so many controversies popping out to Pacquiao’s colorful career,it might fit the
description.By golly, whoever got him into this mess(2 simultaneous contracts),i think it’s becoming uglier everyday. This is really a poker game now.Arum throws another wrench to the gears by going to the Philippines.Maybe we can ask Pacquiao’s two confidants(Wakee and Gacal) how to fix this mess. They probably know how to wiggle out of this venturi.
    My message is:
This sweet science blog can be a place where our two gentlemen can express their wisdom, unless something already forbid them to do it.Is there
light at the end of a tunnel? 86 million people are waiting for an answer and we want Pacquiao fighting again by March or April 2007!!

  23. med moscare Says:

With this disputes & uncertainty Manny has to rest a while. They need the bucks more than our Filipino icon as Manny has enough it now…Anyway, after the skirmish let them line up AB,JMM,JG,EV & whoever wants to face our pacman are welcome @ this division 130lbs, after all they all gonna kiss the canvas! LOL!
    Happy Hoidays!!!
    from Oras, Eastern Samar

  24. Ridgway Says:

Let MAB and JMM fight first to test their abilities before they face their final test with PACMAN. They should do it because they already taste the canvass with PACMAN. They should train harder otherwise they will taste the canvass again but who cares as long as the bucks are in millions. PACMAN is a crowd drawer, people who buy PPV on PACMAN fights are contented of what PACMAN shows in the ring. HBO can attest that PACMAN PPV sales like hotcakes.

  25. Ridgway Says:

Blame the advisers, Gacal, Wakee Salud etc., because they want a piece of PACMAN that’s why they did not inform FINKEL regarding their mess. The question is why did they hide it from FINKEL when he is the legal manager of PACMAN? These people are greedy they thought they are negotiating business in the Philippines where hocus pokus can be made. NOT IN U.S. baby! Where were they when PACMAN was just starting in U.S. And do you know that Salud and Gello-ani are not in good terms becaue they are competting each other.

  26. Viel_Mervic Says:

hey anyone please save Pac from these devil promoters? Or at least pick one of them to be his angel?.. Ooh and by the way, I am in favor of Pac having Finkel as manager. The old man’s very kind and thoughtful who wants nothing more from Pac. The Pacman should consider NOT the words of Salud or Koncz, or from anyone… Except the words of Finkel or Roach. Well if Pac’s not going to fight next year, JMM-MB is not a bad idea, for me that is.. since none of them has beaten Pac. hehe.

  27. apache Says:

    .argh..!

i want pac vs mab! jmm is nothing but a a second rater. mab will KO him in mid rounds.

  28. Hero BOOM Says:

Great move by GBP… Barrera/Marquez will be one helluva fight. This probably one fight that people would like to see. And, even if Barrera should lose, people still would like to see Pacman/Barrera. Well, for JMM, he needs to win big to get that Big Money Fight with the Pacman.

  29. spaceinvader Says:

GBP just want PAC to sign! Go ahead and let MAB JMM duke it out.

  30. rudy Says:

people who say PacMan has the Ace is ridiculous!! Manny got himself into this mess and could delay his career right when its peaking and soaring, this could be more than a speed bump for Manny - which would be a shame - like the first post, dont see ending this so soon - I did just read that Arum is on a flight w/Manny to the Phillipines where they expect an announcement from Manny in regards to the promo deal, Arum by his side - see them as the top runner as Promoter - but in the meantime we get a nice fight in Barrera vs Marquez, expect Marquez to be agressive, smart, and tactful to beat Barrera. Rocky Juarez had the power but not the sweet science to beat Barrera, Marquez is experienced and ring savvy and should take him out w/late KO or UD

  31. heartandsoulujah Says:

this whole drama thing is seriously gunna damage the boxing world if not solved quick pac needs 2 be in the ring for 07 to be a good year for all boxing fans he brings the electricity to the ring and right now is a support beam in boxing doesn’t matter who he faces anymore just the fact that hes in the ring makes my year complete

  32. Matt Nelson Says:

i’m from australia , i like pacquaio to fight barrera. pacman will destroy barrera for sure. australians like pacman fight , he is the most exciting fighter right now in boxing. i hope GBP will win in promoting pacman’s fight and fight all the best fighter in his division. pacman will destroy all of them. happy new year to all

  33. jerry Says:

pacman is not involved on this, but the people around him. if aye am(pacman) aye have to kick-out all this people and leave it to myself to decide who am going to manage my carrier.

  34. j.anacaya Says:

kick them all and look for good guys and simply he will fight barrera early this year to make pinoy people alive.

  35. ilonggo Says:

to all the people around close to Pacman, don’t give him a pen next time lest he will sign another contract mistaken as a paper for autograph

  36. jtcebu Says:

to all the promoters listen, learn and grow up.

  37. fazct Says:

Finally things might be going Marquez’s way. He deserves a good payday. I think he has the best pure boxing skills of anybody out there. I’d love to see a Barrera/Marquez fight.

  38. med moscare Says:

hello to all boxing aficionados! lets celebrate the new year with a bing bang & lets expect that the best in boxing will turn out great for 2007! i mean new crops of talented pugilists from all corners of the the world comes out impressively…intelligent boxers we are looking for! not cheaters in the ring…Peace be with you all!!!
    oras, eastern samar,phils.

  39. hmmmmjimerrr Says:

i don’t know why a legitimate number one contender (MANNY PAC) could not assert his right to fight the Champion (MAB)… it’s stupid… i guess the WBC rankings has no use after all…. why these promoters all think of the money?? and making a piggy bank out of pacquiao… i just hope this is not the start of the downfall of pacquiaos career.. boxing is a test of spirit and guts.. but all i can see are mexican leeches who fight because of money.. what a waste

  40. fejeran Says:

Ok Filopinas MP is dumb for not knowing how to read that is first, and for the record on some of yall who dont watch boxing, he has been beat by mexicans, once by morales, which i admit he got a beating on the last fight, but MP got his ass whooped by JMM, MP doesnt want anything to do with JMM because he knows he will get beat up like last time. So if MP doesnt fight this year, which happens when a street dog is left alone to sign a contract, but thats ok because there always is another mexican fighter to take his spot. MP fans from the phillipines, dont know why yall look up to an illiterate monkey, oh wait, i think a monkey can tell the differnce between an autograph and a contract. LMAO See ya filopinas

  41. rudy Says:

    fejeran - true, true that

  42. MINGO FALCO`N Says:

“WHAT” A FIGHT MAB & JMM .BUT ONLY A TRUE BOXING FAN WOULD KNOW .PACWOMAN SUCKS HE BETTER GET AS MUCH MONEY AS HE CAN.BECAUSE MAB OR JMM ARE GOING TWO EXPOSE HIM AS A SECOND RATE FIGHTER.

  43. hmmmmjimerrr Says:

fejeran- LARIOS,MARQUEZ,MORALES,BARRERA,VELASQUEZ,LUCERO, are not these 6 mexican guys??? tasted canvass because of Manny Pacquiao?? hmmm im wondring how did you come to conclude MP getting beat up by mexicans?? maybe you’re the one who’s not watching boxing

  44. fejeran Says:

hey hmmjimerrr yes i am aware of those fights but i was talking mostly about the better competition not the warm up fights, but i guess u didnt watch the JMM fight, ya he got knocked down 3 times, but look at 11 other rounds they fought, MP was gettin countered punch and didnt do no more damage after that, in the post fight everyone thought, actually knew that JMM had one so watch that fight again, it was declared a draw but the people know who one that night. Thank You

  45. Fidel Says:

The Pacman’s manager and legal team (if he happens to have one) better get this legal problems resolved at the earliest time or Manny will be missing out on a lot of dollars from physically fighting any named opponent versus fighting a legal fight. Fighting a legal fight could drag on and is an ‘expense’ not an ‘income’ (if he were fighting opponents in the ring).

This mess up is probably first caused by motivations for more money and now is haunting them back. If this case drags on and for God knows how long it will lasts…this inactivity and ring rust could be a factor when he returns to fight.

  46. glory Says:

fejeran yeah maybe MP was being battered in the succeeding rounds but actually what happend MP got his left hand injured after round 2 he gave his all to turn the lights off to JMM but i guess not enough… with that MP injured his left because he hit marquez several times using his left and led to injury… another thing is his right foots thumb? or whatever you called it, got blistered because of thin socks he used… that led to MP’s loss.. maybe

  47. fejeran Says:

glory dont make an excuse for him i never even heard of those injuries after the fight, now about the socks, whose fault would that be huh. Well i hope to still see that rematch with JMM, so i can see him go back to the phillpines as a damn loser, JMM will take care of MP worser then what he did to Jimrex Jaca.

  48. glory Says:

are you really that stupid fejeran??? you mexicans won’t stop until MP dismantle all your boxers ryt??? LOL… MP is comfortable now in his weight 130lbs he already had 5 bouts in the 130lbs category and 4 of this bouts are knock outs… so if JMM will move up it will be a big challenge to him specially with pacman’s tremendous improvements… you have to admit that JMM is not even in league with MAB and EM, much more specially with MP.. EM dominated PM in their first bout but what happend?? after 2 more bouts he just suffered 2 knockout loss of his career… that would be the same to JMM who has a glass chin… he might not even reach round 2….

  49. art Says:

Marquez did not even put a great fight against Chris Jhon!! expect for barrera to destroy him… at 125 he fought with lesser boxers, he lacks good experience with competitive boxers.

  50. glory Says:

fejeran after the last fight with MP to JMM, MP immidiately beg marquez for a rematch and it is suppose to be February 26 2005, but what happend is JMM is asking for a bigger share on the purse a lot bigger… so if he really want’s to prove he can dominate pacman why did’nt he accept the rematch and not making money out of pacman?? to whom did he fight insted?? thats victor polo in which a boxer who is retiring already, he can earn much with pacman’s fight why did he took polo as his opponent in which the pot is not even half as much to pacman’s alotted purse.. he’s the one who backed out and great thanks to EM that he was the one who replaced marquez for the fight and taking pacman’s challenge, that is their first clash march 19 2005 in which pacman was bloodied and lost without any excuses… we have to admit also that marquez is not even in league with barrera and morales….

  51. sp vietnam Says:

it is clear to all boxing fans in the world specially filipino boxing fans that the mexican champion barrera and his promoter is afraid to fight the filipino challenger pacquioa ,despite of being no.1 challenger in the division they must fight him(pacquioa). . .it is a matter of PRIDE forget the money. . . .now we already know that barrera is playing hide and seek and he is hiding under de la hoya’s pants. . .we are ashamed of barrera and de le hoya! ! ! we are proud to have an asian brother like pacquioa.

  52. jeremias u.anacaya Says:

all opponnet of pacman in category is no deal like a dead rat

  53. jeremias u.anacaya Says:

pacman power is very dangerous to all of his opponent ,if i were the promoter look for a better fighter against pacman to make all the fans especially pinoy happy
