Agree With Rafael’s KO Of The Year?
By Michael Woods December 27th, 2006Is Brock/Lawrence YOUR choice for KO of the year?
I defy you to find someone with more knowledge about the day-to-day goings on in the fight game than ESPN’s Dan Rafael.
He can throw a pound-for-pound list at you in each and every weight division there is, and even pronounce the names of the five best Thai flyweights correctly.
When Dan speaks, it is best to nod in assent, because the guy does his homework assiduously…
But, allow me one tiny quibble.
Dandy Dan just called Cal Brock’s KO of Zuri Lawrence on Feb. 25 his KO of the year, and I must dissent.
To me, Shannon Briggs‘ KO of Sergei Liakhovich on Nov. 4 in Phoenix, in what Rafael “called one of the worst, most boring heavyweight title bouts in history until the final minute” is my choice for KO of the year.
The action was tepid, at best, to this point, until Briggs yanked a doozy out of his dreads and sent Liakhovich onto the scorer’s table.
That finish made up for the rest of the snoozer, and since no one had predicted that the fight would go into the middle innings, it qualified as a heavy-duty surprise.
What about it, Blog Squad?
You agree with Dandy Dan, or do you think the Cannon’s lacing of Liakhovich is a better fit for KO of the year?
Or maybe you have another nominee…
Have at it…

let’s hear it for the girls- Laura Ramsey, Erin Toughill, round 1, Lake Tahoe August 31. Ramsey knocked Toughill OUT of the ring.

no

Hmmm…Brock’s KO of Lawrence was impressive, but I’ve seen better.
And Amy Green, you’re right. That was one nasty KO. Maybe Toughill’s past her best.

My KO of the year has to be Daniel Ponce De Leon’s 1st round destruction of Sod Looknongyangtoy(or something like that). He crushed this man with a vicious left to the head and it literally LAID HIM OUT on the mat and knocked him out for awhile! Believe it was on the Vargas-Mosley II undercard.
Dont remember another KO that impressive this year….

I agree with rudy. I think Ponce De Leon only threw one or two punches before he got that KO. I barely had time to sit down and open my beer before Sod got laid out. It was GREAT!

Surely though the best KO of all time has to be Vincent Pettway VS Simon Brown.
How many other KO’s render a dude unconscious - Yet still throwing punches while out cold?

I’ll go for Briggs. Yes it was a boring fight but a legendary finish. Not only was the knockout itself physically spectacular, but the circumstances and timing behind it elevated it. Brock’s KO was nice but it wasn’t such an important fight and he was expected to win.

That KO of Sod Looknongyangtoy was definitely a great KO. It might not have been as dramatic as Brocks KO which is perhaps why Rafael chose it. As far as Briggs’ KO, totally piss-poor fight and the KO was not only anti-climatic but a pretty lousy KO IMO.

Brock-Lawrence isn’t a bad choice. Ponce-Sod II and D.Hopkins-Warrick were also gems as well. You can’t go wrong with any of those three choices. Of them, Brock is the only Main Events fighter, so naturally it becomes Dan’s choice. (that was a joke)… I can’t co-sign on Briggs-Lyakhovich being the year’s best KO. The odd thing is that it had all of the elements - last-second, come-from-behind, and Shannon knocked dude out of the ring. But the knockout itself was a lot like the fight - dull. A KNOCKOUT should be judged solely on its own, not for impact or any of that other stuff - that goes into Fighter of the Year, Fight of the Year, etc. No intangibles, just the beauty of the knockout. The three I mentioned were beauties no matter the circumstances that preceded them.

I gotta agree with Rudy. I was at the fight and when Sod went down and the ref was screaming for help to get in the ring, I thought dude was dead.
Paulie, you’re right about the Brown-Pettway KO. I was a big Simon Brown fan and that was the saddest thing to see him on his back throwing jabs. The other thing that made that KO fun, was Tyson was calling it on Showtime and his voice went a few octaves higher when Brown went down.

Based on sheer beauty, I’d go with Brock’s knockout victory. But in terms of significance, it was nothing. Same with Briggs’ KO: It won for him a meaningless alphabet strap. My vote goes instead to Pac Man’s KO of Morales. Significant? You betcha. It made Pac Man a mega superstar and arguably the best PFP fighter in the world.

I think Brock will be the first fighter to be on both ends of knockouts of the year award. I’d say that’s a first in Boxing. Brock gave and he recieved within the same year.
