Arum Outdoes Oscar For Pacquaio
By Michael Woods December 28th, 2006Old man Arum, he just keeps rolling along
Put one on the board for the old man…
Bob Arum fended off a charge from bitter rival, the promotional neophyte Oscar De La Hoya, when he got Manny Pacquiao to sign on the dotted line in the Philippines.
Arum arrived in Manila the day after Christmas, the Manila Bulletin online says.
By the time news broke that the Top Rank president was in the country, Arum had already met with Manny Pacquiao, and in one day had forged an agreement with boxing’s most exciting personality.
“Nobody knew I would be coming over (to the Philippines),” said Arum, who kept his trip secret even from much of his own staff.
“I did not know that Bob was going to the Philippines,” said publicist Ricardo Jimenez. Arum, the newspaper report said, actually wanted to fly to Manila on Christmas, but the 75-year-old lawyer could not get a booking.
Supposedly, many folks on Team Pacquiao wanted Manny to jump ship, and sign on with Oscar, but the wily vet Arum went the extra mile(s), and secured the services of the sport’s most buzzed about boxer…
There is something to be said about experience, and Arum has to feel sky-high at defeating his former client, and now his most bitter rival, De La Hoya…

OK, NOW will Pacman fight Barrera?
December 28th, 2006 at 5:30 pm
Pacman sure wanted to fight Barrera. On the other side Barrera wanted a rematch. This could happen if Manny Pacquiao accept the agreement that goldenboy sent him an answer that Barrera won’t fight at april 28, 2007. Because its a week before ODLH VS. MAYWEATHER on may 5, 2007.
Now, the agreement is Barrera would fight pacquiao at march 17, 2007.
But if Pacman didn’t agree, he would fight different fighter in Macau, China (probably Edwin Valero, because Bob Arum wants this fight to happen if MAB VS PAC didn’t happen).

Arum is a veteran promoter. No promoter on this planet Earth who can evenly match with Bob. Hail to you Bob!
December 28th, 2006 at 9:00 pm
Don’t you just hate it when politics and stupid management get in the way of big matches?
December 28th, 2006 at 9:11 pm
i think it’s just common sense…why would Pacquiao go for Golden Boy when GB has Barrera and Marquez on his team. I think Pacquiao just made the right decision to go Arum over GB because this will even up the playing field. I mean it’s a big question mark when you see Pacquiao and Barrera fighting under one team. Who will GB be on the side of the camp come fight time? Barrera or Pacquiao?

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK BOB! MORE POWER TO YOU…… this is it, Manny Pacquiao & the Filipino people wants. a promoter who is willing to sacrifice or risk himself(travelling thousands miles) not for money alone but for the good of PacMan’s future. Smart move MANNY, Mabuhay Ka!!!!!
December 28th, 2006 at 11:09 pm
Well lets admit it, boxing in general need an exciting boxer and manny pacquiao as he continue to developed and hone his skill he can rule the 130 division
December 28th, 2006 at 11:36 pm
Manny has a brighter future in TOP Rank than in GBP. good decision Manny!!!
December 29th, 2006 at 12:01 am
Bob Arum wrote the book on Promotion way before ODLH was born . He was just awarded Promoter of the year . I think this guy know’s a little about the sport of boxing ?
December 29th, 2006 at 12:54 am
Good choice for Pacman, Top Rank is a veteran promotion company, there is no question its been proven , they made a lot of boxers popular and become a superstar. more power to the most entertaining boxer today. pacman the superstar.
December 29th, 2006 at 1:41 am
There are so many superstars in GBP’s fence right now. While under top rank Arum will surely take good care of pacman cause he is the most exciting fighter today. Lots of golden egg to be laid.

Pacman wont fight on March 17 w/ MAB, since if that pushes thru the bout contract would fall on the date before Shelly’s managerial grip expires. Taking Shelly Finkel out of the equation means Pacman’s lion share.

cortar el flor en la jarden…

bravo-zulu pacman…
salam at papa bob…
December 29th, 2006 at 2:54 am
Great job Bob!!!! You boxed them out. Personal touch is really a time and tested formula, there is nothing next to it. For you, Pacman, get ready to rumbleee……you’re now in good hands as Bob is very serious on his deeds as he would not spend his precious time just to fly over in the Philippines just to convince You.
December 29th, 2006 at 3:24 am
congrats to bob.hope to see manny fight marco for this coming months.more power

Manny Pacquiao has made a lot of news about his finally going for Bob Arum and the big quesion is “Where will this take him?”. Fame and Glory? or Ignominy?
December 29th, 2006 at 7:49 am
if you think this is the right promoter for Manny look out - because GBP does have all the stallions in their stable, and the good thing about GBP is that put their top notch fighters against once another - Arum just seems like a sleezeball, with Oscar you knew BarreraVSPacman would happen - but know there is more doubt in the chance of making that fight happen because of Manny signing with Top Rank - dont like the choice what so ever for PacMan
December 29th, 2006 at 8:33 am
GBP have already a lot of well-known fighters with them. It will not be good for boxing if they all got the best fighters. the case will be MONOPOLY. I hate monopoly!!! so props to the old man for going the extra-mile in securing the contract with the hottest boxer of the world.
P.S. You made the right descision this time around Manny!
December 29th, 2006 at 11:13 am
We want to see Pacquiao-Barrera 2. Juan Manuel Marquez is just a throw in. JMM couldn’t beat Barrera how much more Pacquiao.
December 29th, 2006 at 1:08 pm
Bon Arum is a legend, he promotes a lot of big fights before and made a lot of boxers famous, good choice for Pacman, nothin agaist GBP they are new in this business . Top Rank has the edge. i’m not suprise if i see Pacman in David Letterman show and Jay Leno show. Pacman’s career will be better with Top Rank. Pacman the best fighter in 2006 and the most entertaining fighter in boxing. More power to you Manny Pacquiao…
December 29th, 2006 at 1:51 pm
We are hopeful that Manny’s decision in switching to Top Rank from GBP will not bring Manny in jeopardy. As what Bob Arum says Manny will be out or no obligations whatsoever in case GBP pursue them a legal battle in Vegas, thats the BIG POINT there!!!. As an advice to Manny he should ask a contract from BA stating all the good he has promised to Manny, otherwise BA might deny all these facts later on, and Manny will be in peril. Careful Manny…
The $1M lucrative signing bonus from TR is a bait which BA has done! (this to be confirmed). Now what happens then to the signing bonus of Pcman when he signed to GBP for a 7 fight promo-deal before their trilogy with El Terrible & other big oppurtunities???…hmmm, I am certain GBP will get back on these… At any rate, if BA is a good man with good intentions he can stay with our Filipino icon as long as Manny is fighting. Remember we are in the world of sports GAMBLING!
Now if the smoke clears up we FILIPINOS will rejoice when BARRERA accepts the $2.5M to fight Pcman! Just to prove that Manny is the better man once & for all our Manny is very happy to know that a 2nd fight with MAB is just around the corner. Mind you a $5M plus the singning bonus totalling $6M!!! Now would you believe AMIGOS that MP is much intereted in facing MAB right away rather than the amount of $$$ he is going to get. MP just wants to show the WORLD again that HE is really the better fighter & to get the renowed WBC BELTperiod! After the fight JMM, JG, EV & anybody else @ 130lbs division get ready you CAN line up on Manny.
Lastly is going to be blessed anyway as HE is very kind-hearted who shares his blessings especially the poor Filipino people.
oras, eastern samar, phils.

I don’t think Oscar will let this go that easily. I have my suspicions about Arum and King. I think this thing about contracts and signings is just getting started.
December 30th, 2006 at 8:55 pm
Pacquaio has MAB’s number. So this is a good thing from my viewpoint for MAB because if both fighters fought for the same promoter then it would be
like they was feeding MAB to the lions. MAB is a all time great but it’s far to late for him because he will surely get his head handed to him by Pacquiao who is at his peak and standing right next to 1st top dog Mayweather Jr. P4P Manny is the second top dog at the moment.
January 3rd, 2007 at 1:57 am
wise moved for PACMAN.i think Top Rank can do more better than GBP, watch out for Pacman-Barrera fight coming soon & see how Bob Arum wil do the tricks…wanna bet?
