HBO Counting On Oscar/Floyd To Do Big Numbers

De La Hoya/Mayweather/HBO looking at big numbers up ahead

Ross GreenburgThink HBO is counting on the May 5th De La Hoya/Floyd Mayweather face-off to be the centerpiece promotion of 2007?

Broadcasting and Cable reports that HBO Sports will run a four-part series counting down to the 2007 boxing event of the year, and the series will almost certainly receive bang-up ratings, as the first three installments of the ODLH/PBF run-up show will air following brand-new Sopranos and Entourage episodes on Sunday nights beginning April 15 at 10 p.m. ET.

The fourth episode airs the Thursday night before the fight, B and C said.

“In 35 years of television boxing this is a first for HBO,” said HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg four part hypefestival.

Happily, Liev Schreiber will narrate the miniseries.

Basically that guy could recite the “Js” from the Manhattan phone book, and make it sound compelling…

I am looking VERY forward to this fight. Personally, I believe Oscar can beat Floyd. Floyd has the attitude that boxing does not need. Oscar knows what he’s doing. He hits hard enough to knock out Mayorga, and is fast enough to avoid Trinidad’s punches. He is the real deal and Floyd has NEVER fought somone like him. Do your thing Oscar!!!!!

  2. CRAZY says:

Oscar can beat Floyd jr unless Floyd runs. Oscar will need the left hook to win the fight.

  3. Lalito says:

It will be a very, very, close fight but I think Oscar will prevail. For those of you who like “boxing chess matches” this is it. It will be a tense, -with not very much action- fight. It may come down to one punch. Oscar by KO 9th round.

I have no doubt this event will produce big number. In fact it “might” set up a new record on sales.

I believe De La Hoya can beat PBF. PBF will be fighting too far from his natural weight class and DLH can turn this into a big factor. I can already visualize that PBF being on his bike all night long because it’s a bigger chance for DLH to hurt him than him hurting DLH.

This one will surely goes down to the scorecards.

  5. The Man says:

I think Floyd can outbox Oscar all 12 rounds

I haven’t been to a big fight in Vegas since Bararra vs Hamed, but I think I might just take the time to show up in person for this one, It’s gonna be an event. My take is that Shane Mosely’s speed gave Oscar enough trouble to lose two very close decsions, and Floyd is faster than Shane. Still I believe Oscar won the second Mosely fight & I gave Oscar 7 of the twelve rounds against Trinidad. But then I gave Pernell Whitaker a close decsion over Oscar when they fought, and the officials didn’t agree with me then either, so I’m no Harold Lettermen when it comes to scoring fights.

The fact that Floyd is coming up in weight to fight Oscar will offset some to the speed advantage, and the experience in big fights weighs heavily in Oscar’s favor as well. I have never seen Floyd in any serious trouble, he might be the best boxer Oscar has ever faced, and that is saying alot for Floyd, because Oscar made it a point in his career to fight the best avaible. I don’t know how Floyd will react under serious pressure, but I was right there, in person when Oscar came off the canvas against both Pernell Whitaker and Ike Quartey to win. Oscar is tempered and proven under the toughest of conditions, Floyd hasn’t been in with the level of competion Oscar has, nor faced the fire power that Oacar faced.

The only serious advantage Floyd has over Oscar is age, if father time catches up with Oscar, Floyd will run away with an easy decsion. Believe me Floyd watched the tapes of Mosely/DeLaHoya more times that we have. I am a major fan of both of these guys, and it’s a tough call for me to pick a winner. Crazy nailed it with the fact that Floyd probably couldn’t stand and slug, he will have to box to beat Oscar. It is a tough call, and I like both fighters, so I’m gonna bail on you without calling a winner.

Floyd will beat Oscar eight rounds to four. Floyd will win but Oscar won’t make it easy for him, that’s for sure.

  8. DaveB says:

My heart goes with Oscar but my brain goes with PBF by decision. Damn.

Oscar De La Hoya is a true boxing technician! He’ll cut floyed off so he can run! Oscar will land a rocket left hook like the one that knocked out mayorga! and itll be all over! floyed will feel the power differnce at 154 pounds! PBF’s reflexes wont help him in this fight! oscar has great hand speed too! GO OSCAR!
