Tickets for the April 7 Joe Calzaghe/Peter Manfredo Jr. super middleweight title fight (HBO) are going like hotcakes.
Promoter Frank Warren announced today that with nine weeks still to go until the opening bell of this transcontinental clash, over 20,000 tickets have already been sold.
“This may be Joe’s last fight in Wales before he crosses the pond to take on the best the U.S. has to offer on American soil,â€? Warren said. “It’s clear Joe’s fans want to see him get his historic 20th title defense and give him a sendoff that will resound in heart for years to come.â€?
Calzaghe (42-0, 31 KOs), from Newbridge, Wales, is currently boxing’s longest-reigning world champion and has successfully defended his world title 19 times—sixth-best on the all-time list—since winning the crown in 1997. A victory on April 7 will move him into a fourth-place tie with the illustrious Larry Holmes and Bernard Hopkins.
Manfredo Jr. (26-3, 12 KOs), who hails from Providence, RI, and is a former NABO champion and a finalist on the first season of “The Contender,” is ranked #7 by the WBO.

Joe Calzaghe is 35 years old and judging by his timetable that means he might fight in the USA early next year. It’s a shame that Calzaghe does not fight here in the USA. I think his promoter might be underestimating Joe’s Popularity here in the USA. I think once his promoter gets Joe to fight in the USA there will be a build up of interest. I think In my opinion Joe would be more popular than Ricky Hatton.
