Chad Dawson Dumps Dan Birmingham

“Bad Chad Dawson hires Floyd Mayweather Sr.

Chad DawsonHmmm, interesting development coming from light heavyweight prospect-on-the-cusp-of -contenderhood Chad Dawson.

Bad Chad, who will meet WBC light heavy champion Tomasz Adamek in the main event on Showtime’s Saturday card in Kissimmee, has hired Floyd Mayweather Sr. as his trainer, dumping two-time BWAA trainer of the year Dan Birmingham.

Dawson told Kevin Iole that “Dan was all about Winky (Wright), and I felt I needed more time from him than he could give me. He was all about those guys (Wright and Jeff Lacy). Floyd is a very hands-on trainer. He’s there to run with me, he’s there in the gym and he’s taught me things I never knew. I’m throwing quicker and faster combinations and, even though he’s a master of defense, I’m a better offensive fighter now.”

No word on exactly when Dawson made the change but it sounds like he and Senior have been working together for a decent spell…

On surface, my reaction is, Who the hell is Chad Dawson to be so public with this semi-private matter? His best win was in June 2006 over 33-year-old Eric Harding, who was 4-4 in his last eight fights and has taken some terrific punishment in his career…

Am I leaning more towards the 30-year-old Pole Adamek because of this trainer shift?

Not necessarily, as I believe Dawson has the edge in athleticism in the WBC title scrap…
